Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance, by Robert N. Proctor

Review

"In the past years there have been few new fields of research as timely as agnotology. Many a time one is puzzled by the widespread ignorance of some of the greatest challenges mankind faces today, be it global warming, the way to the Iraq war, or the global tobacco epidemic. Agnotology might very well be the tool to delve into the great black holes of modern knowledge and also find a way out." (Andrian Kreye)"Anyone who thinks ignorance is nobodys business has a lot to learn from these provocative essays. The distinguished authors offer compelling evidence that what we do not know is every bit as much a product of human choice and ingenuity as what we choose to know. Agnotology rescues ignorance from the no-mans-land of unexamined social phenomena. It makes us ask what is at stake when we dont know things that are plainly before our eyes. This is a book for every thinking citizen."―Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard University

Very good. Much more academic and not as accessible as Chris Mooney's political trilogy on agnotology, which starts with The Republican War On Science. I was surprised by some of the subject matter in this one and learned a lot: European ignorance of West Indian abortifacients, Native American contributions to paleontology, and the somehow still mysterious world of the clitoris. One thing that greatly disappointed me though was that the title includes "...and Unmaking of Ignorance." I was hoping for some advice, common or academic, about how to fight growing ignorance and manufactured controversies in the age of Trump, like QAnon, Jade Helm 15, Benghazi, Birtherism, and so on, but there is really none. It's a great study of how actors create ignorance (not always deliberately, and not always to malicious ends), but has no information on how to rebalance knowledge. However, the book is one of the first on the subject, and its goal is to start a field of study, and I hope it does.

Understanding the full dynamics behind naivety and/or manufactured ignorance is critical in this day and age of sociopolitical and economic times. Readers will be utterly amazed about how much they DO NOT know, or worse, refuse to know and understand. A must read for any who wish to be well informed of agnotology in the social, political, private, and military realms!

This is not easy reading. The authors are from academic institutions and the vocabulary reflects this. I consider reading this very timely (GOP primaries) reading and will reserve final judgment when I finished the book.

Great book.

who can resist a book about ignorance, sort of zen trip into scientific not knowing. the whole idea that what you don't know is more important that what you do is though-provoking.

Prompt delivery, nice goods. Thanks.

A couple of examples in not enough for developing a theory. We all know what happens with tobaco and pharmaceutical industry. I expected a lot more

On the whole, more pain than pleasure. Yes, the subject matter, an attempt to identify and promote a new discipline, is worthy, though this study of the science of ignorance purports to cover so much ground--the corporate denial of scientific data, the legal (and sometimes justifiable) enforcement of secrecy, social support for certain kinds of ignorance--that the concept's viability is called into question. But the book itself is an interesting slant on many recent and historic influences on public consciousness, from the mechanics of sexual arousal, to the tobacco lobby's duplicity, to the ongoing denial of global warming. It is the level of writing that is atrocious. Maybe I should have waited for the Bill Bryson version, or for anyone who could use these materials to fashion a book that doesn't insult the language and waste one's time. These writers, to a person, are academics, and almost all should be soundly thrashed with a hardbound copy of Strunk & White. This is a compendium of every fault scholarly writing is heir to: wordiness, redundancy, needless complexity of sentence structure (often designed to mask or extend mundane observations), pointless jargon, infelicitous phraseology, obscurantism, even lame humor (as per the double entendres in the essay on the clitoris, by a feminist no less!) that probably plays better in the senior seminar than in a book intended for mature adults. These scholars write as though being paid by the word--and for a nonexistent editor. The book could have been half its length with no sacrifice whatever to the content. My advice, if you are intent on owning this insult, is to skim or speed-read the essays as fast as possible, gleaning the ideas without having to indulge the authors in their padding and verbal ineptitude.

This catalog is the Metropolitan Museum at its best. It is a textbook in the best sense of the word. It has comprehensive essays on the later history of the Byzantine Empire, and documents the religious and artistic flowering that marked a civilization in decline. It is almost as if the Byzantine Empire (or what was left of it, which continued to shrink as time went on) turned its back on the world an looked inward intensely. This, along with the other catalogs of the exhibitions the Metropolitan has done on Byzantium, is a must have for anyone interested in this significant part of European history. The selection of icons and other artifacts is first rate, and the quality of the printing and reproduction of photographs is to the high standard the Metropolitan has for its catalogs. Get it while it is still available!

Excellent book!!!

The first exhibition, "The Age of Spirituality", shown in 1977, was organized by the eminent scholar, Kurt Weitzmann, Professor Emeritus of Princeton University (1904 -1993).It is also important to note the essay written by Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, Pharan, and Riatho, Abbot of the Holy Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Catherine, Sinai, Egypt who on page 335 writes,"...holy icons are more than artful and historical objects. They are a vital entity and a vibrant presence in the liturgical life of the Church, which is the very context that sanctioned and fostered their creation, existence, and use from early Christian times." He goes on to say, "Indeed, by their captivating formal purity, transparency, and clarity, icons create what we may call a resonance or an uplifting in the spiritual sense. They are statements of faith ..."Lastly, mention must be made of the conclusion of the catalogue and exhibition, which focuses on the influence of Late Byzantine icons on Northern Renaissance art. Many masterpieces are exhibited including Memling, van der Weyden, Jan Van Eyck and Gerard David. They are breathtaking, but perhaps too much icing. A preview of Ms. Evans's next exhibition?

There is a great need for such books on Byzantine Art. These three expo. and books by the Met on Byzantium are magnificent! I wish others will follow on Post-Byzantine Art.

This is a really great collection of byzantin icons, I would really recomend it to somebody interested in the subject.
