I'm a beginner - novice scuba diver and enjoy underwater photography. I really wanted something that wasn't overly complicated to help me identify various creatures when scuba diving in Jamaica. I bought the series of 3 (Reef Creatures, Coral and Fish) and these were precisely what I wanted. The first few pages have some drawn illustrations to guide you to which class you are looking for and go to that section where there are excellent color photos to help identify the species. Every species listed also has a short blurb to tell you specific identifying features (which can be helpful if the specimen you're identifying was a little varied from the photo), the prevalence in the area, normal dwelling areas (like in coral, near sponges, etc) to be even more specific to help you identify. I've already used this to help me id species from past photographs. They are very comprehensive and easy to use.My only minor problem and is probably more my fault for not looking at the shipping weights, is that they are a tad heavier than expected. I'm going on another dive trip soon and plan on taking them with me and perusing them between dives and they will definitely require that I lighten my luggage. Together all 3 books (spiral bound with plastic cover) weigh about 5-6 lbs. Comparatively considering prices for other guides which usually had complaints of not being easy to use, no color photos, not enough info., I'm still very happy I bought these. I think the value for the money (purchased used - good to very good condition via Amazon), was more than excellent. Even knowing the weight, I would definitely buy again.

Sure it is easy to note in your log book that you saw a "crab", a "shrimp", and a "nudibranch". Being curious about the specifics of what I saw made me thankful to use a copy of this book at the dive shop that we dove with. Now that I am dabbling into underwater photography, this is a must have for identifying exactly what I have been taking photos of. I appreciate the behavior characteristics of the animal, coloring variations, and informative descriptions.

I bought the Reef Fish and Reef Creatures book for my boyfriend (26) for Christmas 2013. We go to the Caribbean annually and he loves snorkeling so this was the perfect gift. He actually "hates reading"... but every time I go to his house, the books are in a different spot (couch table, bedroom, bathroom - lol) so I know he is reading them often and enjoying them. I've gotten lost in them a couple times myself. They have great pictures, great info on how the species are classified, and are perfect for identifying what we have already seen. The info for each fish is only a couple lines, but if he has more questions he just googles the name. Much easier than googling "red fish I saw in Punta Cana" haha. I recommend these - pictures are great for all ages, but info is pretty abbreviated so probably for young teens and up as far as the reading goes.

As a diver I encounter many different critters. If I see something weird I take a picture of it. When I sit down later to go through all my shots I flip through and find out what it is. This is a great addition to my other id books. Paul Humann takes wonderful pictures that help make identification easy!

This book is great! I saw Reef Fish in a condo we rented in St John and I had to have it. When I looked it up in Amazon I saw this book and had to have this one too!! Next purchase will be the Reef Coral book. We base all our vacations on where the best snorkeling is, so I know these books will get a lot of use!

I just used this book (along with their companion books on fishes and corals) on a week-long snorkel trip off the coast of Belize. The photographys of the animals are great: printed on good stock, clear, show the animals as you see them underwater, and show the characteristics that allow you to make identification. There are also some supplementary line drawings. The textual information nicely supplements the photographs.Of course many of the groups of animals contain more species than are shown in the book. I would have wished for more instances where the authors point this out. But this is a small matter and the book almost always allows you to determine at least the group to which the animal belongs.

it divides it up into body shapes and other categories so you can start at the most likely spot in the book to find the critter you're looking for! i especially like how it advises on various coloration possibilities and how rare or common a critter is. that helps eliminate a candidate when i cannot visually distinguish between two very close critters as it is far more likely i'm seeing the common version than the rare one! i also am a big fan of the Reef Fish ID: Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas book as well and will likely get the Coral ID soon.

I have the previous editions of this book and use them extensively. This latest expanded editation is a fantastic reference for those divers who want to know what they are looking at. I prefer the layout of the older editions but assume the greatly increased number of photos necessitated a change for the third edition. Even if you have an older edition and or have been diving for years and "seen it all",you will find this book a useful and valuable reference. For full disclosure, I have contributed many of my photos to this edition.

Just recently reread The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I admit, it is because The Hobbit is in theaters and I haven't read them in many, many years. Even having seen the movies, the books really bring me back into an wonderful fantasy world. Not an easy read, but well worth it, and I was able to draw on some bits from the movies for visuals, while getting the more complete story of the novel. I'd recommend these books for anyone! While the ending can be a bit drawn out in Return of the King, it does wrap up and close the story nicely, giving far more information and detail than the movie provided.

The hard-copy versions look nice and all, but I wanted to know more about the Kindle edition. And I wasn't looking for reviews of the story. That's been the subject of glowing praise for decades. I got tired of trying to find a review that would answer the only question I had. Couldn't find one, so I finally broke down and BOUGHT the Kindle one-volume edition. And the answer is: Yes, the table of contents is all bundled together at the beginning, as opposed to having a separate T-o-C for each "volume" (stop sneering, I've seen other one-volume e-books where you have to skip through the whole first section to get to the table of contents for the second section). More importantly, the T-o-C actually works. That's right, I can go straight to any chapter by tapping that chapter on the T-o-C (again, other e-books had a static T-o-C where no amount of tapping would take me anywhere and I had to keep flipping pages to get to the chapter I wanted). Everything else seems to be functioning without problems. Dictionary, highlighting, synching between my Kindle and my phone, etc., all work perfectly. And in addition to being about half the cost of the three separate volumes, the one-volume edition helps to keep the scrolling at a minimum when searching through my library.

I bought it as a gift for my best friend, and the book is absolutely gorgeous! The cover has nice fabric-like texture, the pages are white and smooth, it has lots of illustrations. The book is big and heavy, so you won't be able to carry it around with you, it's designed for home reading. Can't recommend this edition enough: either as a gift or an addition to your library, it is a great buy.

I have never read the lord of the Rings before but I have watched the movies and played the games and I loved them. However I was always confused at what was going on at times but after reading the books everything makes so much sense now. I honestly liked the books more than the movies and although they are similar the books have way more content and details in them. So if you loved the movies I would 100% suggest getting the books.Speaking of the books I got the paperback version and they are beautiful. Although they are simple and the covers are one plain color per book it still has that sense of style and simplicity. They covers and case are thick and well made. Although their were points in the books where the words were slightly faded I still has no problem reading them.I'm not even going to talk about the story since just trust me when I say its one of the best series ever. I have never read or even considered reading a series twice but I honestly think that I might read this one a second time that's how much I liked it.So if you liked the movies and aren't sure about reading the books I would say go for it and get them since you wont be disappointed. If you never watched the movies then get both them and the books:)

Review for The Lord of the Rings.I'll keep it brief, this is not a review of the actual story but of this specific edition. I have attached many pictures that I hope help you decide if this is an edition you want to buy.Pros:- The font is big and easy to read.- 65 beautiful illustrations by Alan Lee that bring the story to life.Cons:- Slipcover is an opaque plastic, whit a modern look that I think doesn't complement the book.- One or two blank pages before and/or after each illustration.Overall I think this is a great edition and it's worth buying.

I am beyond disappointed. The font is too small to read, but I thought the artwork would make up for this since I already own editions with larger font. So many beautiful pieces of art were uploaded! Where can I find this edition? I just wasted $27. None of this artwork is found in the paperback edition. Is it found in the $90 hardback edition? I’m debating if I should just send this back since I can’t even read it 😭 These books are tiny!

For some people it doesn't matter, but for me, when I bought a serie of 4 books, the covers have to be the same, but here, I have two different cover, ugly, and two others who respect the esthetic of the movies. It's supposed to be a gift, I'm very upset.

What can you say about a classic? I'd never read these books all the way through before, and was determined to try, despite remembering what I had read as being tedious and somewhat purple-prose-ish. I apparently remembered wrong - coming back as an adult, these are beautiful books, very well-written and of course true epic fantasy. It may be that my tastes have changed, or just that I've matured, but these will definitely be reread many times. My only issue is that with the Kindle version, the footnotes seemed to be messed up. Many of them only bring up a page number (with no link), which may be how it was in the original books, but others seem to apply to footnotes further down the page, or just not at all to the thing they're noted from. Frustrating.

#12,375 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I've been practicing lettering for over two years now and I have NEVER bought a book to teach me cause all the reviews I have read people complain of the book being almost all blank, like you're buying some worksheets and to be honest you can get that type of exercises online (I got most of my practice out of youtube videos) BUT when I saw this book cover on the instagram of a lettering artist I follow I was very excited and eager to take a look, the cover speaks lifestyle and lettering... I was like YEEAH! finally a book worth buying!!! I ordered immediately and when it arrived I couldn't stop READING and PRACTICING! This book speaks to you, its like having Nicole right next to you talking about the little details of modern lettering that no one else has talked before. From the spaces between letters or lettering in oval shape or circle. Even if you are a beginner or a medium advance in lettering you'll find this book helpful. Why I recommend this book:-Opens flat!! that's awesome and clever at the same time, you'll notice that the spine of the book is exposed and that allows the book to open really nice. I think this detail says a lot about the work of putting together a good book for lettering.- You'll find a little project on each lesson so you can put your brush pens to good use and decorate your next party or make something special for your family and friends.- Very detailed and well explain.- I really loved the cover and back cover to be on what I think is cold pressed paper (excuse me if i'm wrong) which gives a really nice texture andfeeling.- You won't find empty pages just to practice a's, b's c's,... (you can get a notebook for that). To finish I'd like to express that I have enjoyed the book so far (I'm about 50% into it). Hope you enjoy it too and this review is helpful.

An awesome book for me as a beginner. Very easy to follow from how to hold the pen to making the first strokes to some really cool, practical project ideas. My favorite part is that it has tons of troubleshooting tips and lessons on how to play with style, both in pictures and with an explanation, to make my lettering look beautiful. Also, the book design is gorgeous.

This is a lovely book full of great information and pictures.I bought the Kindle edition to read on my iPad app, so I could see the color pictures. The formatting puts two pages on the screen at once, leaving the print extremely small and hard to read. And there is apparently no way to increase the font size. Trying to zoom out does nothing.I’ve tried to load it onto my Kindle to see if it is adjustable there, but nothing happens. So, a great book but best used in the physical manifestation.

I follow Nicole Miyuki Santo on Instagram and I love her work; I was super excited to get this book. I have a few books about modern lettering and calligraphy, and this is my favorite.Aesthetically this book is just amazing. There are so many beautiful details and every layout and example is very well thought out and considerate. The lay flat binding is the best, it makes working with the book so easy, I wish all my books were like this.I really appreciate the projects that follow each lesson in this book - it's nice to be able to have a kind of homework assignment to push you to practice what you just learned. I also think it's a nice way to show the reader that all of these wonderful projects we see online are totally doable with the right practice and skillset (and the right teacher).Lastly, I think that this book is great because it feels like you're taking an actual course or workshop with Nicole. There is such a wealth of information and it isn't overwhelming because it is set up so well, she walks you through everything you need. I also really appreciated the life lessons - those bits of advice are always helpful and add to the genuine feel of this book; a lot of care went into this to help people learn and you can feel that.I can't get enough of this beautiful book, it has helped me so much more than other books - you won't find a mostly empty book with drill sheets if you buy this book. It's more like a full course on modern lettering and it's great! Buy it!

I read other reviews about this book and decided to order it. Folks who bought it before were not kidding. This Lettering book is so well done. It makes you want to get started. I also love the "fold flat" aspect of the book. Lots of information....nice encouragement...nice projects to follow. I am so pleased I bought your book Ms Nicole. May you have great success in your endeavors. Nice work.

I can't sing enough praise about "By Hand"! It is so smartly designed and laid out (physically too—it lays flat!!) and Nicole does a great job of encouraging you to find your own style and offers so many fun and cool ways to practice and refine your technique—even after an hour or two of practicing the exercises I felt like I was able to see progress! Calligraphy is by no means an art form that one can master in a couple hours, but you WILL see progress if you can troubleshoot yourself, try out new techniques, and apply her wisdom to your own artwork. "By Hand" also offers wonderfully helpful, digestible insights that allow you to troubleshoot successfully and figure out the reason WHY things may or may not look right. I would highly recommend anyone (even beginners) to go through this beautifully designed book and playfully experiment with the ideas and exercises! She has it all in here, and has thoughtfully inserted tips and tricks to all the questions going through your head, like where do I find this pen? How do I write on a balloon? Can you do calligraphy on materials other than paper? Why this ink over this one? This book is comprehensive in its content and even gives you some fun projects to immerse yourself in, as well as an invaluable list of resources at the end! Grab yourself a cup of tea, sit down, and relax with this lighthearted, delightful, and beautiful book and all the treasures it has to offer :)

The Culture of Make Believe, by Derrick Jensen

Review

Publishers Weekly-Writing with the same driven passion and intense intelligence as his critically acclaimed A Language Older Than Words, which examined the interconnections between personal and social violence, Jensen says this book "is more about racism and far more broadly hate as it manifests itself in our Western world." As in the earlier work, Jensen paints on a huge canvas he details American racism from the genocidal slave trade through lynchings to the 2000 murder of Amadou Diallo by NYC police, and covers a wide range of other cultural horrors as well: the massacres of Native American people, the Holocaust, the 8,000 deaths from the 1984 Union Carbide gas leak in India, and the deaths of 500,000 children in Iraq. The book is packed full of startling details South African apartheid laws were enacted at the direct request of the De Beers diamond company to facilitate business; aspects of Christian doctrine supported slavery until about 100 years ago. But the uniqueness and enormous power of Jensen's work is his ability to forge these events into an emotionally compelling and devastating critique of the intellectual, psychological, emotional and social structures of Western culture. Along with greed and globalization he says that the valuing of production over life and the abstract over the particular have set Western culture on a course that will end "really, with the end of the planet." While some readers might take umbrage at his more unsettling associations he compares Hitler's political language to Teddy Roosevelt's Jensen's intricate weaving together of history, philosophy, environmentalism, economics, literature and psychology has produced a powerful argument that demands attention in the tradition of such important books as Herbert Marcuse's Eros and Civilization and Brigid Brophy's Black Ship to Hell.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.Library Journal-This passionate book chronicles the violent hatreds that have been overwhelming our planet, tracing them back through their sources in imperialism, slavery, the rise of global capitalism, and the ideologies of possessiveness and consumerism. Jensen's previous book, A Language Older Than Words, a reflection on family violence and childhood abuse, attracted a wide audience. Here he puts together statistics, bits of history, and reflective interviews with friends and acquaintances to examine a world in which hatred and destruction come all too easily. As in his previous book, his intent is to recall victims as individuals. His focus is on the dangers of abstraction and the economics that result from our viewing people and things as sources of profit and elements in systems. What he intends is not a systematic picture but a stunning collection of horrific close-ups. Africans and Indians are most often in view, and women are never far from his mind. Our disdain for the environment also intrudes frequently. Jensen's solution is a return to the simple life, perhaps much like that of the hunter-gatherers, yet he knows that such a turn must be "the end of civilization." Readers will be moved by his argument, though more likely they will be inspired to look for solutions that let us keep art, science, and the great treasures that go with complex communal life. Surely not all abstract thought is bad, but Jensen's aim is to shock us awake and let us stew in the world's injustices, and at that he duly succeeds.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. I've only read two of Derrick Jensen's books, but after reading A Language Older Than Words I was a big enough fan to go on to this one. I am a truth seeker and found more than I bargained for when delving into the thoughts and facts that Derrick Jensen has written. Weeks after finishing the second book, and months after finishing the first, I am still talking about things he said. I can't help but wonder, if everyone read this book with an open mind, and courageously faced the way we allow/support production to come before people (say nothing of the natural world), if maybe just maybe, we might be able to start turning things around on this planet.

This is one of the most difficult books I've read, and I'm not known for shying away from difficult topics. Derrick Jensen looks deep into the dominant culture and what it does to women, indiginous people, race, the natural world, and why this culture has come to act as it does. It is painful to look so honestly, even at history you think you know, but find there are details you missed. It is a hard read, but if we don't start looking then how can we change it? I highly recomend it, even if it takes you over a year to finish as I did. Immeasurably thought provoking.

After diving into "A Language...." and establishing a new perception for seeing the world in a much different light, I whole heartly endorse Mr. Jensen as one of the few leading the way into a possible NEW WORLD order, one involving understanding, forgivness and redemption for the hate and greed that have been at the forefront of civilization. With "Culture of Make Believe" Derrick has done the research for us, compiling hundreds of observations and conclusions about the current state of affairs which have lead us to the insanity of our present state. Read, observe and apply all that has been reveiled. Thank you Mr. Jensen for giving many the tools to see and hopefully a changed heart to act upon these atrocities that have kept us all from "experiencing" the world as human beings.Highly recommended and a must read!

One complex and powerful read.

I assign this book when I teach Race and Ethnic relations to students at a University. This book really outlines the systematic process that people at the top of the hierarchy go through to maintain the status quo (status top). Any resistence is met by annihilation and no resistence means that the minority group has successfully been silenced. I highly recommend this book and Jensen's other book "A language older than words" that suggests that because of our unfortunate mentality ($$$$$$$$$$$$-though shall have no other gods before me) we have forgotten the language that allowed us to communicate as equals with other beings and the land, not as dominators focused on exploiting (see Raine Eisler's work). If you like to think, and most do not (let's not step out of our comfort level), this is a book that will get you thinking!!!

This book is a masterpiece, outlining the history of civilization's assault on the natural world and all living things and analyzing the underlying pathology in detail, with example after example.

Derrick Jensen does a superb job weaving issues like environmentalism, racism, and sexism together as a way to explain Western Civilization's problems. It is usually seen as normal for people within our culture to look down on more "primitive" societies, but this book challenges all of us in this Western age to consider the ways it was founded, how it operates today, and its future place in years to come. It's a long read, but the content is worth paying attention to and thinking deeply about.

He is amazing! I read this book over and over and learn more each time.

There have been some wonderfully descriptive reviews written for this book. Rather than reiterating once again what happens in the book, I'd like to come at it from a different point of view.My husband and I used to have houses and apartments we rented out, and in the late '70s and early '80s we rented to Vietnamese families. We also had Cambodian families and once a Laotian family. They made great tenants. They always had the rent ready and never asked if it would be all right to be late. They also fed us when we came to collect. It gave us a loved and wanted feeling, contrary to what we experienced with some other tenants. We ate some amazing things, understanding that it was not polite to refuse. I expect it was just as well our tenants did not know the names of their dishes in English. I think we were happier that way. Then around 1985, I think, the flow of Asian tenants dried up. We waited, but they did not come. My husband and I talked it over and decided to go looking for an answer, and perhaps find some new Asian tenants. Knowing there were Vietnamese places of business on East University Avenue in San Diego where we lived, we went there and stopped in first at a place which published a Vietnamese newspaper. We relayed our question to the lady working there. She listened politely as I explained, and then looked at us a little oddly."I can answer your question," she said, "but do you really want to know?""Yes," we said."I cannot speak for the Cambodians and Laotians. I only know about the Vietnamese. Your tenants may not have spoken enough English to tell you this, or did not want to speak of it because they wanted to forget a terrible time, but I am sure you know that they were rescued from almost certain death at sea, if they were refugees. America was the first country to open her doors to them, allowing them to come in. For that they are grateful, incredibly grateful. With the help of sponsors, kind people like you rented to them. They subsisted on Welfare and other government programs and they went to school, paid for on their behalf by your," she paused, smiled, and amended, "our government. They studied hard, became citizens, took their degrees, and went to work. No more Welfare because no more assistance was needed. Now," she said, "they are doctors and nurses and lawyers. Some will soon be judges. They are plumbers and masons and carpenters. Some," she smiled wider, "print newspapers for our people, especially the older people for whom a new language is difficult. But the tenants you are looking for do not come because they no longer need to rent houses and apartments. Now they are buying their own."I've thought of that lady and her words many times since then. That is the way it's supposed to work! Take advantage of what is given, go to school, achieve as well as you can (and they could!) and go to work. It was the first time our Welfare system made perfect sense to me.Dr. Vinh Chung speaks of just that thing in his book as he tells the story of the lives of his mother and father in Viet Nam, their escape and near death at sea, and their miraculous rescue. In the beginning of the book he speaks of the degrees attained by himself and his ten siblings, people who could not speak a single word of English when they arrived and were painfully trying to adjust to a culture which bore little if any similarity to their own. But their love of education shines out, their parent's refusal to accept mediocrity because they wanted a better life for their children than they had and they recognized and pushed their offspring to accept the opportunities before them. This is a great book, absorbing and never dull. I should add it is written with a wonderful sense of humor. Except for the part when they were at sea, I chuckled all through the rest of it. Dr. Chung has a great way of laughing at himself. I truly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Amazon ReviewWhere the Wind Leads, by Vinh Chung with Tim Downs. Most of the reviews of this book, at Amazon and elsewhere, seem to be addressed to a religious audience. The book deserves a wider audience -- among those more inclined toward the secular, toward humanism, toward science, and especially those with an interest in sociology. There is nothing in the book that should put such readers off. On the first page of the Forward, written by Richard Stearns, the President of World Vision U. S., Stearns writes:"All along the way good people, and many good Christians, intervened with a helping hand."A father is frantically running, carrying his ten-year old son, who is near death, to a hospital in a strange land. A woman stops him -- a stranger. She speaks French, which he can't understand. She hands him a few bills and he is able to take a cab to the hospital. Leaving the hospital, again carrying his weak son, another stranger hands him $5, and he is able to take a cab back to the refugee camp. A stranger tucks a $100 bill into the shirt pocket of a three-and-a-half year old refugee boy who is rushing through the San Francisco airport with his family, and that $100 enables the Chung family to buy food in their new home in America. We know nothing about the religious perspectives of these strangers. We do know that they were good, decent, humane. And there is no religious test that people must pass before they may pay taxes to support programs such as food stamps, subsidized housing, and free school lunches -- programs that helped to save the Chung family.Anyone who has an interest in "the boat people" who fled Vietnam after South Vietnam fell to the communists in 1975 will find this book enlightening. Who were they? Why did they leave Vietnam? How did they get to the United States? And how did things go for them here in America? The Chung family is Chinese, with roots in Vietnam going back several generations. They owned one of the largest businesses in the Mekong Delta -- a multi-million dollar enterprise. When the communists took over in 1975, they confiscated the Chung business, and the Chung home. Over the course of the next few years the Chung's reached the conclusion that, if they remained in Vietnam, they would spend the remainder of their lives in poverty. They made meticulous plans to escape, and departed their community of Soc Trang a few at a time, so as not to attract attention. They went to Ca Mau, where they boarded a boat that the Chung's had bought -- a boat large enough for their extended family, and 16 other families -- a total of 290. They left in June, 1979, just as the typhoon season was beginning, intent on crossing the pirate-infested South China Sea, with food and fuel for only a few days.On the second day at sea, pirates boarded their ship. After robbing them the pirates rammed their ship, hoping to sink it and drown them all.On the third day they reached Malaysia. They beached their boat and scuttled it in hopes of not being turned away. When they jumped from the ship into the sea on the Malaysian coast they left behind almost everything, including their shoes. Malay military took them into custody, and marched them for five days from one sandy beach to another. Vinh describes how his nine-year-old sister Yen's tender feet were scorched by the hot sand. During this march their mother (her eight children ranged in age from 12 to twin boys 18 months old) had a miscarriage and was hospitalized for nine days. The family did not know where she was, and she did not know where her family was. She was almost shipped off to France without her family; her family was almost shipped "to an island refugee camp" without her. She was reunited with her family less than an hour before they were removed from Malaysia. The way they were removed from Malaysia is one of the most awful parts of their experience. The 290 of them were divided and put in four small boats, and were told that they would be towed to a refugee island, a couple hours away. Instead, they were towed out to the middle of the South China Sea -- 20 hours -- and cut loose; abandoned to die. Within hours each boat had drifted out of sight of the others. On the fourth day of being adrift, they had their second encounter with pirates. This time the pirates didn't try to rob them -- perhaps the pirates knew that they had already been totally stripped of anything of value. The pirates simply tried to overturn the boat and drown them. Two boats were working in tandem, with a rope stretched between them. The rope broke, and the engine on one of the boats stalled. That is all that saved them. They drifted in the South China Sea for six days, under an unrelenting sun, without food or water, and had essentially given up and were waiting to die, when they were rescued by the Seasweep, a ship sponsored by World Vision. After 100 days in a refugee camp in Singapore, they at last learned that they had a sponsor -- a small Lutheran Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas.Without knowing a word of English, and facing ethnic hostility, they began to make a new life in Fort Smith, with the help of local churches and government programs designed to assist impoverished families. For a while four of the brothers had no assigned place to sleep -- it was first come, first served. After the laundry was done, pants went into one hopper, shirts into another, and again it was first come, first served, as the eight sons looked not for what was theirs, but for what fit. Vinh, the author, tells us that none of them ever said, "That belongs to me." When their father, Thanh, decided that they should open a restaurant, the older children dropped out of college for five years and all of the family worked in the restaurant without pay. This family, working together, was able to achieve "the American dream." The children hold 21 degrees, including five master degrees and five doctorates. Vinh, the author of Where the Wind Leads, is a dermatologist. Yen, the nine-year old girl who had a knife held to her throat by a pirate in the South China Sea, is an ultrasonographer. Another is in science management; another a senior systems engineer; the twin boys, who at 18 months old had been dropped, kicking and screaming, into pillow cases so they could be hoisted aboard the Seasweep, are both optometrists; another is a family physician; another a dentist. As other reviewers had said, this is a compelling read. Vinh has a great sense of humor, the book is very well written, and while the family's faith is evident, there is no attempt to impose it on others.

This is a strong and moving book. It is well written and has earned its 5 stars. It is the story of family---more so than any book I have ever read. Vinh has 10 siblings and Is blessed with a mom and dad who always put the children first. After the Americans pulled out of South Vietnam the communist from the North occupied. 95 members of one family fled the brutality of their enemy. They endured inhumane conditions as they searched for a country that would allow them to enter. This is a vivid account of what can happen to refugees who try to escape to safety. They were picked up and saved from the South China Sea ---when all were near death from lack of water and food. Even in America the family suffered from Ill treatment, discrimination, poverty and lack of language skills, but they made it. America did not make it easy for them but only here could they have accomplish the same degree of success. This book is a tribute to hard work, family and American freedom. The author remembers little of the brutal escape to freedom because he was only three years old. However, as an adult I am compelled to point out his life achievements. Vinh Chung graduated Harvard magna cum lauds and graduated from HarvardMedical School, He studied at University of Sydney as a Fulbright Scholar and completed a master of pharmaceutical science. He also holds a master of theology from the University of Edinburg. Wow. Give a guy a little freedom and see him fly!!!

This book is very well written and has some fascinating projects in it. It's given me some great ideas on what can be made on the inkle loom. The only caveat is that this book contains projects that were popular in the 60's and 70's. Various head bands, guitar straps, room dividers, etc. Took me back in time to be sure. The nice thing is that even if you never plan to make one of her projects, you can still adapt it to 2009. For example, the poncho is timeless, the headbands can be updated and you have a great basis for where to begin.

This book is just o.k. It spends more time on specific weaving project ideas than it does concentrating on the actual art of inkle weaving. Most of the projects, alas, are quite outdated. It contains almost no weaving patterns at all, which was a big disappointment. It does, however, take some time to touch upon selling your work and moving on to weaving wider fabrics (thought the information covered is not very detailed, only about a page on each of these topics). It's an interesting read, but if you want some comprehensive information on inkle weaving, this is probably not the book for you. Might I point out that Helene Bress's "Inkle Weaving" book is still in print and only cost me a fraction of what this book cost, while taking a much more thorough look at inkle weaving.

This book is a little outdated but the basics are still present including ideas for building your own inkle lom. The project ideas can easily be updated for today using different yarns and colors. Since I was a similar age when the author wrote this book, it was a pleasure to see my "roots!" I treasure it and I know I will peruse it for ideas many times in the future.

Fast shipping, good book

I had this same book years ago, but gave it to my daughter when she married. Now that I finally have time to explore inkle loom weaving, I remembered that book and decided I wanted another copy. I was delighted to see that it was available and ordered it immediately. I have since obtained my inkle loom and am glad to have my old favorite book as a good resource!
