Review

“A fascinating and chilling look at Nashville’s seedy underbelly, with a view of the city only the locals generally see. True crime aficionados are going to clamor for this well-told, intriguing tale of murder and betrayal. What other secrets might Bishop uncover?”   —J. T. Ellison, New York Times–bestselling author of Lie to Me“Bound to be one of the year’s most memorable true-crime books. A page-turner. Intriguing.   —John Ferak, bestselling true-crime author of Failure of Justice:  A Brutal Murder, An Obsessed Cop, Six Wrongful Convictions“A riveting, astonishing story of murder, betrayal, and corruption—but most of all, a story of a dogged amateur sleuth who spends almost two decades chasing leads, connecting nearly invisible dots, unearthing the truth, and attaining a measure of long-overdue justice for a murdered girl.”   —Jon Jefferson, of Jefferson Bass, author of the New York Times–bestselling Body Farm novels“An amateur detective on the trail of a fall guy wrongly convicted for a babysitter’s murder in Nashville in 1964 is a very good story, and when he hooks up with ‘the living Sherlock Holmes’ to find truth and justice, it’s a great story! Highly recommended.” —Michael Capuzzo, New York Times–bestselling author of The Murder Room and Close to Shore“Intrigued by some unanswered questions in the seemingly solved 1964 murder of Tennessee coed Paula Herring, researcher Michael Bishop begins to investigate the case and ends up uncovering the dark, shocking secrets at the heart of this decades-old mystery. A riveting real-life detective story that reads like page-turning fiction.”   —Harold Schechter, author of The Mad Sculptor: The Maniac, The Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation  “True-crime readers will find a unique opportunity within the pages of A Murder in Music City. The author did not simply report a story; he investigated a murder. Readers will experience the actual unfolding of the murder probe, with all the description and detail that come only from living the criminal investigation. Prepare to be enthralled by this inside look at an unforgettable story.”   —Jack and Mary Branson, authors of Delayed Justice: Inside Stories from America’s Best Cold Case Investigators"With the discovery of a secret file and aid of forensic investigators, Bishop gets to the root of [a] shocking crime and the decades-long cover-up. Compelling narrative nonfiction and an enthralling true murder story.”   —R. Barri Flowers, bestselling author of Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair and Murder at the Pencil Factory “Bishop...proves a surprisingly effective amateur sleuth in this gripping examination.” —Publishers Weekly

Let me begin by saying that I've been an avid reader my entire life, which, at this point, is 75 years. And I can say without fear of contradiction that this is possibly my all-time favorite. Michael Bishop has an uncanny skill set for writing. I have recommendedthis book to all members of my family - many of whom are physicians and engineers - and they are equally impressed. I was raised in Nashville, so that is another selling point for me. About a month ago, my wife and I drove to Nashville from our home in Columbia, Tenn,to help load boxes for Hurricane Relief, and while looking for the warehouse, we stumbled across the road where the murder took place.Very interesting! Congratulations, Mr. Bishop, on your outstanding documentary!

When I read about this book being on the best seller list in Nashville, I had to buy a copy. I have lived in Nashville most of my life, and grew up close to the Crieve Hall Area, and attended a High School that was a rival in sports to John Overton High, which Paula Herring, the subject of this book, attended. Just reading about the publication of this book bought back some major memories for me. Paula was a year ahead of me in school, and from my Freshman to Senior year in High School, I baby sat for a lovely couple of Metro teachers. One, the father, was a high school football coach, and the other, the mother, was a young PE teacher, and coach at Overton. I remember this event, and how upset my employer was over the murder of Paula Herring. I knew she had coached Paula in basketball, and this fact, plus all the news reports of this murder, lodged the event in my mind. Of course, I was young and very sheltered, and never knew about the conviction of a man who was most likely falsely accused of this heinous crime, but I have fond memories of my baby sitting days with this young couple, and their three lovely children. Imagine my amazement to see this couple mentioned in the book, the mother being interviewed by Mr. Bishop, and her telling him that this murder had haunted her for decades and that she was haunted by her own what if's. I knew nothing about the evils of Printer's Alley, prostitution, or drug addiction in Nashville at that time; I was a very innocent young girl who had not been exposed to the trials and tribulations that Paula had to endure. I'm also 90% sure that I was the one babysitting for this couple and their friends (six children in all) at 75 cents an hour) on the fatal night. I never knew my employer had spoken to Paula the very eve of her murder and the sad consequences of that conversation; now I see why this sad event haunted my young employer, even though she was entirely innocent of any wrong doing. I was also sad to learn, at the time of Mr. Bishop's research, Paula is resting in a grave with only a foot stone provided by the funeral home. She had, at the time of Mr. Bishop's visit, no headstone. I would like to see him lead a fund raiser, and yes I would be glad to contribute what I, a retired Metro Nashville teacher, could afford., for the purchase of a tombstone for Paula's grave. That's one wrong the citizens of Nashville could right. Paula Herring deserves that. I am glad that Michael Bishop persevered to try to find out the truth about this murder, and if Mr . Bishop's speculations about the culprits are true, and it appears that they are though we can never know for sure, this crime was even more heinous than anyone imagined.

The subject is true cold case crime investigation, but the engaging voice of the amateur forensic sleuth, whose intellectual enthusiasm has been captured by the possibility that the murderer of a young college student escaped justice, takes this out of the generic. I wanted the narrator to succeed as much as I wanted to know the solution to the mystery. The storytelling is straightforward - no cliff hangers or manufactured withholding of key information. The reader is riding along with the narrator in his quest to not only find out the truth, but also improve his investigative technique as he progresses from witness to witness, clue to clue. He's a great guy to hang out with, too, honest, polite, patient, even tempered, dedicated, without a single trace of self-indulgence or self-aggrandizement. not one moment of complaint from him - he's engaged in his quest, engaged in living, and makes you feel that way too. Enjoyable and compelling beginning to end. Recommended.

Although the writing is a little clunky and old fashioned cliches are sometimes used to describe characters, the story is presented in a thorough and orderly fashion. With so many facts and anecdotes to work with, the writer skillfully arranged and introduced all the events and characters in such an intriguing sequence to keep the reader constantly engaged. The description of the moral and ethical corruption of the power brokers of 1960's Nashville was just astounding to me. This was a book that was difficult to set aside. It was definitely suspenseful and satisfying to read. Highly recommended!

I grew up in Nashville and was in first grade and lived in the Crieve Hall neighborhood when this murder happened. I do remember hearing about it and about the little boy thinking his sister had spilled tomato juice on herself. It was very scary at the time for 6 year old me. What's scarier now is knowing all the corruption that was rampant at the time. It still was when I was growing up. The biggest eye opener was all the partying that went on! I was raised by very strict religious parents who didn't drink, so my childhood was quite sheltered. All I can say was wow! I really appreciate the time and effort that was spent researching by Mr. Bishop. I think he did a masterful job of piecing together what evidence he was able to glean after all these years and I think he's probably very close if not spot on in his resolution. I wish the man who was wrongfully convicted had still been alive and I hope it gives his family some peace as well as Alan Herring. This should be a must read for anyone who grew up in Nashville during that era.

This book is worth its weight in gold! I am in the middle of a custody battle for my two grandchildren. I have followed this book step by step. My attorney doesn't know that I'm reading it. He is so happy about everything I have done so far. Evidence, evidence, evidence. If you want to win your case, then, READ THIS BOOK! Thank You Mr. White for writing this wonderful book. GOD BLESS YOU.

I was forced back to Arizona, where I NEVER lived, I spent 2 months there with the baby trying to do the right thing and let the father and paternal grandparents visit with the child because the grandparents of my son wanted him, they had a DNA test done on my son without my permission and then served me with papers.I had no where to live, no friends or family in Phoenix and my savings was almost gone.I was angry and emotional and the court date was coming up fast and not an ounce of discovery had been done by my attorney. I happened across Guy Whites book, read it in an hour, then emailed him and met with him the next day because as it turns out he happened to live in the Phoenix area.I hired him as my child custody consultant form my case.I told him the good and bad about me and the cicumstances in the case so he could give me the best advice possible for my situation. Guy helped me to analyze the case and move the "chess pieces" around to show the judge this should be labeled a grandparents case becuase my attorney was just not listening to me and wasn't getting it done.Guy helped me replace fear with knowledge and helped me learn how to manage my attorneys and my case. He taught me the value of hiring a child custody consultant, and not being afraid to follow his advice and instructions. We found out that 6 out of 6 times my son was going for visitation with his father, he was being left with grandparents and he is a 41 year old man who STILL live at home.Guy would guide me on how to communicate in an efficient and effective way with my attorneys to manage my case and use the evidence we collected to paint a picture of the father and show that his lifestyle was unsuitable to raise a child, and it was the grandparents who had the vested interest in the child, not the father. Guy taught me how to label this for the judge to recognize it was a grandparents case. I could not have done this without Guy.I received the judgment that I could relocate back to California with my son with primary physical custody. Guy taught me how to replace fear with knowledge and even though I came to him late in the game, I followed his guidelines and his strategies that he mapped out for me during our consultations and with his guidance he changed the course of my sons life.I paid Guy all I could afford and between him, private investigator fees, and attorneys fees my savings is gone, I lost house but I live close to friends and family and I have my son.Without Guy as my child custody consultant, and using the book as a roadmap to managing my case, the outlook for the future with my son would be completely different. To this day, the father still has not paid a dime in child support and my son is 17 months old.Because I am just getting back on my feet, Guy continues to check in with me and offer any advice he can to help me.This book and Guy Whites years of knowledge turned my case around when I had no where else to go.The private investigator that I hired purchased 20 of his books and hands it out to their clients as a guide. If there are negative reviews on Guys book one can only assume that someone didn't follow the advice Guy offers, and lost their case. His book is not to tell you now great lawyers are, or how great psychologist are. It's practical, logical, direct advice and compared to the money we have all paid in attorneys fees, this book is worth paying 10 times as much as it costs, and his consulting skills I cannot even put a price on.I am so thankful to Guy.Please feel free to contact me. I a real person with a real story and I owe it all to Guy White and the strategies contained in his book and taking the chance on hiring him as my child custody consultant.

Most helpful advice out there - taking control of the situation with evidence. Not only a fantastic resource book but the author provides his email for questions-- and he writes back immediately with free consultation. He even contacted me when I didn't respond at first (I was a bit distraught) to offer support.Clearly an expert at what he does and passionate to help others. I only wish I reached out sooner -- but even 3 weeks to trial received great advice for strategy.Thank you Guy.

Best book i have read on custody so far without being too negative or too over whelming or lacking details. this is helpful, but be prepared to wonder if your lawyer is doing enough hadn't want to do a lot more to help your case and to encourage your lawyer to do more.

Amazing! I wondered how anyone could give this book a negative review but now I think I might have figured it out. What if the people who gave negative reviews are bitter parents who "lost" their custody cases against their exes who got help from the author of this book?

I wish I had this book 8yrs ago when I filed for divorce. Guy is right, your case is never over and custody is just a word. You have to win with evidence and Guy tells you how to go about doing that. Guy writes from experience, which I have found in my own case, to be more valuable than a degree on paper. He is detailed and give specifics (names changed to hide identity obviously) on cases. He is a no nonsense, black and white kind of writer in his descriptions of what and whom he worked with. I would recommend this book to anyone in any stage of their divorce and/or custody battle. For me, it's brought some closure on certain issues (like CPS being incompetent and unwilling to really get to the truth) but it's also given me hope that all is never lost. There's always a fighting chance to protect our kids in a divorce/custody battle...how you go about it will be the deciding factor.

The author of this book is very passionate about the subject material and very experienced in the custody arena. After reading the book, I still needed more specific information on my particular case so I retained Guy White to consult with me on strategies that would help my particular case. Every penny was worth it's weight in gold! Guy spent countless hours listening to my drama and giving me tangible advice. I would use the advice and then report back to him on what the court appointed psychologist concluded, etc. He would come back with me tactics and advice. We ended up winning the case and I believe a lot of his consulting information turned the tide. Within a few phone calls he knew all of the names and people and their stories involved in my case....my Attorney barely even knew anyone's name. The love and passion for this subject really comes across and he is right on when it comes to dealing with Attorneys and Judges.I was attempting to prove that my ex was not the best parent. Guy told me to lay off that and focus on some other issues otherwise the Judge would have sympathy for him and see me as the evil witch. This was very true as was much of the other advice he gave me, and I began to see the Judge siding with my ex....so I took Guy's advice and it worked, it turned the Judge from siding with him to agreeing that I had the best interest of the child at heart. So glad I retained him to work on my case....he is very practical, down to earth and pulls no punches....tells it like it is.

Review

“A stirring and personal account . . . For all her doggedness, Hanna-Attisha is a goofy, appealing, very human narrator. . . . Hers is the book I’d recommend to those coming to the issue for the first time; the crisis becomes personalized through the stories of her patients and their parents.”—Parul Sehgal, The New York Times“The Iraqi American pediatrician who helped expose the Flint water crisis lays bare the bureaucratic bunk and flat-out injustice at the heart of the environmental disgrace—revealing, with the gripping intrigue of a Grisham thriller, ‘the story of a government poisoning its own citizens, and then lying about it.’”—O: The Oprah Magazine“It’s one thing to point out a problem. It is another thing altogether to step up and work to fix it. Mona Hanna-Attisha is a true American hero.”—Erin Brockovich “A clarion call to live a life of purpose.”—The Washington Post“Gripping . . . entertaining . . . Her book has power precisely because she takes the events she recounts so personally. . . . Moral outrage present on every page.”—The New York Times Book Review“Personal and emotional. . . She vividly describes the effects of lead poisoning on her young patients. . . . She is at her best when recounting the detective work she undertook after a tip-off about lead levels from a friend. . . . ‛Flint will not be defined by this crisis,’ vows Ms. Hanna-Attisha.”—The Economist“Flint is a public health disaster. But it was Dr. Mona, this caring, tough pediatrician turned detective, who cracked the case.”—Rachel Maddow  “Mona Hanna-Attisha’s account of that urban man-made disaster reads both as a detective story and as an exposé of government corruption. . . . Her book’s message is that we each have the power to fix things, to make the world safer by opening one another’s eyes to problems. Her book reinforced my belief that the first step to becoming a citizen activist is seeing the world as it should be, not as it is given to you.”—The Seattle Times“Essential for all readers who care about children, health, and the environment. This should be required reading for public servants as an incisive cautionary tale, and for pediatricians and youth advocates as a story of heroism in the ranks of people who have the capacity to make a difference.”—Library Journal (starred review) “She is an unlikely hero—a pediatrician who went up against the forces responsible for poisoning an American city, my hometown of Flint, Michigan. Yet because of her gentle but unrelenting perseverance, she brought the world’s attention to this crime. A story of race, greed, and a crumbling democracy, What the Eyes Don’t See is a brilliantly written book—may it help save every Flint in this country.”—Michael Moore “[A] powerful firsthand account . . . Hanna-Attisha’s empathy for her patients and the people of Flint comes through, as do her pride in her Iraqi roots and her persistent optimism. . . . An inspiring work.”—Publishers Weekly “Told with passion and intelligence, What the Eyes Don’t See is an essential text for understanding the full scope of injustice in Flint and the importance of fighting for what’s right.”—Booklist (starred review)

Back in 2014 the Flint Water Crisis made me furious. When Snyder was elected governor I thought he might be one of those moderates who is fiscally responsible and socially just. But when I (little ol' me!) saw the drinking water coming out of Flint's faucets in 2014 and I heard Gov. Snyder say the water was safe, I spit out the clean water I'd been drinking from my own municipality. It took years, national attention (Rachel Maddow) and moving heaven and earth to get the Michigan Dept of Environmental Quality to even admit there was lead in the water. NO amount of lead is safe. If this had happened in Grosse Pointe where I live, the wealthy people here would've risen up, told their story and would've been listened to. The problem would have been solved within days--not years! The fact that Flint is impoverished make this doubly unconscionable. Reading this book (God bless Mona Hanna-Attisha and Marc Edwards from Virginia Tech), stirred the old fury I felt when it first happened. And that's a good thing. Poor people are getting the shaft on so many levels that shelves of books have to be written on each issue. It's exhausting ME! Don't people understand that if you help people who are disadvantaged it will help everyone? If you give everyone good health care and a good education we'll all pay less in the future? It's so logical I could scream. I'm going to scream, and keep screaming until people treat each other with the respect they deserve. This is one of the most important books of our times.

I liked Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha after reading just a few pages of her new book, "What the Eyes Don't See." Almost immediately, I started calling her Dr. Mona in my mind, meaning no disrespect by being overly familiar with a woman I have never met, but simply reflecting my growing, and now immeasurable, appreciation for her commitment to do all she could for "her" children -- the kids of Flint, Michigan who were being poisoned by lead in their drinking water. She is a kind person, and the kind of person who I would like to have as a friend, with whom I would like to be on a first-name basis. Not until page 273 did I learn that "Dr. Mona" is what she tells her kids to call her.Dr. Mona is the kind of doctor we all would want for ourselves, and especially for our children, or grandchildren. She is a teaching doctor, smart and professional, a trainer of pediatricians, but sees patients in her clinic as well. She cares about them as for her own. She views it as both a personal and a professional obligation to look out for them. And as a public health professional, she knows the importance of getting ahead of a situation, of protecting children from harm before they show up in clinics and hospitals with symptoms of devastating disease."What the Eyes Don't See" chronicles how Dr. Mona became aware of the Flint water crisis and immediately jumped into a maelstrom of political denial, blame-shifting and responsibility ducking. Using rigorous science and stubborn passion, Dr. Mona and a small circle of her colleagues were finally able to to prod resistant government officials into doing their jobs. Without their activism, the public health crisis would have continued. As it is, thousands of children were exposed to lead in the Flint water. No amount of exposure is safe, and the damage done to developing brains and bodies is permanent. Dr. Mona's team scored a victory of sorts, but it is a victory no one would ever wish for: the situation was completely avoidable and should never have occurred. An important theme of the book is the power of government, for good or for ill, and the democratic necessity that government serve all citizens, especially those who need it most. The lead water crisis in Flint was the result of a hasty and sloppily implemented decision to change the source of the town's water from Lake Michigan to the Flint River without adequate testing for, and without legally mandated treatments to address, higher levels of corrosiveness in the new water supply. The switch was instituted by an unelected city manager who was exclusively focused on "austerity" measures, placing cost-cutting above all other considerations. In the ensuing efforts to avoid responsibility, numerous other government agencies and individuals responsible for public health also lost their ethical bearings.Another inescapable theme is that our country is stronger because of immigrants like Dr. Mona and her family. She was born in England while her Iraqi father studied there. Rather than return to Saddam's brutal regime, he brought the family to Michigan while Dr. Mona was a young child. We are all better off because he did.The title, "What the Eyes Don't See," suggests many meanings. One is that our empirical knowledge is constrained by our cognitive categories. If you think that the only source of lead in children's' bloodstreams is lead-based paint, then you don't look for it in water and dismiss the possibility out of hand. Also, lead in water is not only colorless and invisible to the eye, it is also odorless and tasteless; it is a silent and unseen killer. And the devastating effects of lead exposure on intelligence, behavior and other outcomes are often latent, lying in wait potentially for many years.Dr. Mona is an elegant and graceful writer, and even those who know the basic outlines of the Flint story will find her account a page turner. She interweaves the main story about Flint with her own family story very effectively. It is an outrage that this book ever needed to be written, but given what happened in Flint I am very glad that Dr. Mona wrote it.

This book is good for teaching science, integrity, family values, persistence, the importance of good government and the virtues of public service, while also revealing the depths of depravity and carelessness sometimes found in our actual governments.

(My review from Goodreads.)I pre-ordered this book the moment it was available, because I knew it would be incredible, and I wanted to support Dr Mona — who I consider a friend, mind you. Owning this book, however, meant that I took a few extra weeks to get to it, because the pressure of not having a due date meant I kept putting it off in favour of library books that did have due dates.Having said that, I began it just a few days ago and devoured it eagerly. Some aspects of this books are not news to me — as a pediatrician with an MPH like Dr Mona, I'm well familiar with what lead does to children's developing brains, and also with toxic stress and the ravages of poverty. I've also visited Flint and seen firsthand some of the abject ruin in many neighbourhoods. (I was there to speak at a conference — what I saw was simply what I saw while out for a long morning run.). And, of course, I've heard about Dr Mona's role in this whole affair from the first time it hit the national news. Yes, she is as incredible as she appears from this book. Also, the story she tells of her own family is somewhat familiar — while I am not Chaldean, I'm a South Asian who was also born in the United Kingdom and whose family emigrated to the United States. Again, aspects of story I found familiar. So what did I find enthralling? Honestly, it was the drama of institutions. Not so much the state agencies that more or less blew it when it came to protecting the people of Flint. It was of the institutions that, in the end, decided to be on the right side of history: Hurley Medical Center, Michigan State University, etc. Dr Mona's descriptions of how people's names are dragged through the mud because they chose to speak up are not inaccurate — and far more common than we'd like to know. For me, this book was about that critical moment — what institutions would stand with her, and which would either hound her or choose to stay silent? There are many lenses through which one can read this book, and I would not presume to tell readers what their lens should be. Consider the above as you read this story—which you really should read—and ask yourself if the places you venerate in your own community will stand up for what's right when it becomes inconvenient.Ultimately, that is the story Dr Mona imparts to me.(PS Mona — well done.)
