Perfect! Now I have one for each child. Husband received quite a number of presidential Christmas cards over the years. Those cards have been divided between my two children. I had one copy of this informative gem before finding this. Now the kids each have their own historical reference to those cards.

Wonderful

I have long loved the historical aspect of the White House going back to Mrs. Kennedy's tour of the White House after she redecorated it, so this was another aspect of that history that I enjoyed reading.

This is an excellent book. I ordered two as Christmas presents from two different sources. They both were sealed in plastic. When one was opened as a Christmas present it had an address label affixed inside and a penned name. Very disappointing as I had no indication of this when I ordered it. Embarrassing.

I've wanted to check this book out for a long time. The copy I received is in excellent condition and arrived quickly. It was much less expensive than buying the book new. Most folks don't work in Photoshop as their main software program, but need to get photos prepped, looking good, and out the door to social media and or the print, this is the book you want.Do your self a favor and invest, yes it's an investment, in this book...Discipline yourself to work through the book from cover to cover, you will always pick up something useful or remind yourself something you 'thot' you already knew.Just when it couldn't get better, watch the Glyn presenting at Adobe Max 2018 sessions online and you will have a video companion to some of the wealth of information in the book!Lastly, you might as well buy two copies, as the first one is going to get marked up, coffee stains, dog-eared, etc!

I purchased the book at the end of October and failed to crack it open until today due to my love hate relationship with Photoshop.The book is great. It is well organized and clearly written and illustrated. Glyn does an amazing job of breaking things down and this is why this book stands apart.If you are frustrated by Photoshop buy this book. You will fall in love with the possibilities.

This is a great book to have around if you are a design student or in the design field. There is a link in the book to download free files to work along with the author. He gives great details to what should be done and easy to follow with him. I have read the first few chapters and now I have just started with the files. You will love this book.

Loved the portrait retouching tips.

I appreciate that at the beginning of the book the author points out that all we need is the basic understanding of three things about Photoshop: brushes, leave your masks, and blend modes. That makes things a lot less intimidating for me:)The first chapter describes how to use layers and the author advises that we do not pass up that chapter because it’s what Photoshop is all about. I don’t know how to use layers, so I smiled when I read that and found her chapter quite helpful. Now I’ll be using layers!At the outset Dewis gives us a link to the book's files so that we can download them in process photos along with the author. Some other authors do that too, and I much appreciate it. Nothing like learning by doing. Opening the files on my computer and having the book next to me makes layers approachable finally. The author goes into great detail in order to make the execution pretty easy.When he discusses layer mask see author uses replacing the sky is it example which is brilliant because all of us have at least some landscape photos in our library. Again, his instructions are sufficiently detailed to leave no unanswered questions as to how to do what he is suggesting you do.Dewis also has a section on brushes and a subsection about creating fur and hair of all things! In this section, and elsewhere in the book, the author generously refers us to other photographers work on how to use Photoshop. Nothing like having more than one resource.The author also discusses retouching portraits using layers, and blend modes, but the most helpful and fun final chapter is what he called bonus content —- He talks about how to add fake catchlights in the eyes which always helps when you don’t get them in camera, an easy way to whiten teeth with the lasso tool and saturation adjustment layer, and, what will be quite helpful, how to change the lighting affect on the persons face in a Portrait using layer masks and adjustment brush. The author said he uses that trick on every portrait and I can see why.This is easily one of the best how-to books on Photoshop I’ve read. Not only does it help immeasurably to work the same photos along with the author, his instructions are tailor-made for people new to layers like me. They are clear and detailed so that you don’t feel lost when following along. That means a lot to learners like me :-)

I’m a portrait photographer and Glyn Dewis has been a great inspiration and fantastic teacher. This book breaks processes down and explains things clearly. Not to mention giving me new ideas to try in my photography. Photoshop can be a jungle of information. Glyn has a laidback way of teaching skills and making it all seem not so scarey. AND he always encourages you to try things. I would say that this book is for beginners to advanced. Because who couldn’t use more tips and inspiration?

So glad I bought this book! I've done a lot of research online about safaris and there is so much information but it can sometimes be hard deciphering what is accurate or not. This book details out the locations and makes it easy to compare different locations. I was planning to go to a certain area and found out from this book that I actually picked a less than desirable time to go yet I found plenty of vacation packages online for that time. I have yet to take my safari but thanks to this book, I'm looking for a better time to go.

This was the only book I found that gave me the type of information I wanted to select an African safari trip. It is not perfect, but it was definitely extremely helpful. African safaris are expensive, and this book definitely helped me get the confidence to made this expensive decision.

I have limited experience with travel books, but this seems to be the one for a trip to Africa because there's little elso out there. The last time I used a Foders' extensively was 40 years ago, and that one was close to 50 years old then. This one has what appears to be very good advice and is Ray reading. The publisher has become very leftest formy tastes but the info remains useful for every kind of traveler.

This was a gift to coworkers/friends who were traveling to Africa, and it was a great gift. They use this book and really enjoyed having it. Rich colors and thorough information. Also has maps and animal identifications. Great book, thick too, and worth the money!

Info was good enough BUT there were no maps for most of it so the majority of the time I basically have NO CLUE where they are talking about. Is there a map they sell out there that you HAVE TO have to go with the book. I'll tell you what, I will buy another publishers map because this info should be included in this book. It's infuriating. Also, when discussing $$ the book starts in US $ but then shifts to R's - like I know what that is. I've been reading at the gym where I have no access to the currency rate of an R!!!! This could have been a good book.

While I found the writing to be quite compelling, the subject matter was wildly inconsistent. Certain sad places really don't sing. At all. And Cook admits as much. Read this book more for the insights and information provided about these places rather than for the 'song' that may be--or not--associated with them.

A non-fiction work from a writer of fiction that seems like a lifetime of acute observances from someone with a thoughtful eye. This book covers several places around that world that have special meaning to Cook and are sites of tragedy. This personal journey includes his wife and daughter's reactions as well as his own, giving a rich perspective to places that were occasionally new to me. It's quite an interesting read, and makes one reflect on how these events unfolded as they did, while keeping a positive balance overall. A nice departure for this accomplished writer, and very thought provoking in the current global political climate.

I checked out this book at my local library primarily because of the intriguing title; unfortunately, the content did not meet expectations. The book is about one-half a personal travelogue about the author and his family (boring) and about one-half about the places he visited. The dialogue is rather disjointed, rarely does any of his personal reflections portray ‘signings’ as the title implies. I have visited most of these places and was much more deeply moved than the rather superficial impressions of the author. Really not worth the time to wade through this book, there are many more introspective and enlightening perspectives about the places defined as dark in the book.

My all-time favorite author writes a beautiful memoir.

It took a while for the book to get to me in California, but it was well worth the wait. In the meantime, I listened to Dr. Rupy’s six episode podcast 2 or 3 times. The enthusiasm and authenticity in his voice is refreshing in a health world that is increasingly harder to navigate. The guests were knowledgeable and Dr. Rupy asked the appropriate questions. Real science-based studies were used as evidence throughout. Each time I listened I learned something new and grew more excited for the book.I received the book last night I have already read the first 30 pages. The layout is amazing. The introduction is written like a magazine article, which I believe makes the abundance of information easier to digest. Is is intriguing and the writing is immaculate. No mistakes or boring redundant information. It is obvious that Dr. Rupy spent a vast amount of time pulling together relevant research. The enthusiasm I heard in his podcast can also be felt in the writing, which is inspirational. The content is broken down beautifully and is easy to follow. My hope for this book is that doctors all over the world read it and adopt Rupy’s approach. Western medicine is amazing but food is medicine and nutrition is the foundation of health. The two should be used as one to help shape better health systems all over the world. I am so glad that Dr. Rupy dedicated his time, energy and love into this project. I cannot wait to finish reading the intro and to get started with the recipes. This will be a life changer for me.

Loved the information in this book, it was damaged in an electrical fire 2 weeks after buying it which was really sad but I loved reading what I was able to. Very informative!

This is a wonderful book, the recipes I've tried are great, and I love the Doctor's commonsense approach to diet and health.

Absolutely love this book. Not only are the recipes amazing, but it totally taught me my own way of using ingredients that I use often, but not in a way that was nearly as delicious and healthy. It’s a recipe book but it’s also an incredible influence for creativity! Very much recommended.

Have made several recipes and enjoy his comments and personal history. Photos are good and as the final product appears.

Sorry, big waste of money. 100 everyday recipes??? Haven't even heard of half the ingredients. Didn't see one recipe I would even try.

About the Author

Dr. Richard Lee is a Board-certified practicing cardiac surgeon at Saint Louis University where he is a Professor of Surgery, Vice-Chairman of Surgery and Co-Director for the Center of Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Northwestern University, his Medical Degree at the University of Illinois and his Masters of Business Administration at Washington University. He completed internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin, General Surgery Training at Rush University and Cardiothoracic training at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Lee completed a fellowship in Adult Cardiac Surgery and Heart Transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic while he was President of the Thoracic Surgery Residents Association. He has published over 70 original research papers and currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Lee served on the medical school admissions committees at Rush, Northwestern and Saint Louis University for over a decade. He has also served as Residency Program Director in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Northwestern University and Associate Program Director at Saint Louis University. Dr. Lee co-founded Camp Cardiac and Camp Neuro, summer camps dedicated to introducing high school students to the field of medicine.

This is a unique, much needed, and excellent road map for anyone from a high school student to young academic physician. It is written clearly and succinctly and can be read in whole are in part depending on where the student or young doctor is along the road. The suggestions are sensible and quite useful. I strongly recommend "Get Directions: A Career as a Physician" to high school students considering a medical career, pre-med college students, as well as current medical students and resident. It is especially valuable for aspiring and ambitious academic physician.

As a physician who did Pre-Med in the 70's, it was nice to have information for my Pre-Med daughter from this century.

Medical school is the only graduate program that an A student can routinely get rejected. Almost 50,000 students apply and even more quit prior to applying because of a lack of top grades and test scores. This book outlines a path for students from high school all the way to a career in medicine. Many previous books like this one have done an OK job with instructions on getting into medical school. This book however will guide you much further including finding a post graduate residency which is also getting harder. If you follow the advice given in this book and have above average intelligence and work ethic, there is a good chance you will succeed. The book has straight forward instructions on what to do and what not to do. With the competition so intense, one small weakness is all that is needed for an admission officer to reject your application. The author has extensive experience being on admission committees and knows who is likely to be a successful candidate and those qualities are spelled out clearly. He even repeats some of the most important recommendations throughout the book for emphasis. Having gone through the process of going through pre-medicine and medical school, the road map outlined in this book is a straight forward way to stay on your path to success.

What I love most about this book is the way it breaks down the intimidating process to getting to medical school and beyond into tangible, bite-sized steps: from high school to medical school to residency & fellowships to finding the perfect job to carving out your niche and succeeding as a leader/expert in your field. From personal experience (I’m currently in the process of applying to residency), I can tell you that the journey can be overwhelmingly long and difficult at times, but this book is like having a supportive and wise mentor who can guide you along the way and help you troubleshoot when things inevitably don’t go as planned. Moreover, it offers practical tips from other successful physicians and students to provide additional perspectives.My bookshelf is filled with books about how to be a successful medical school candidate or matching into a great residency program, so it’s tough to come across a book that replaces them all. There is nothing else out there that covers all the steps as comprehensively as this one. I wish it was available when I was in high school! I anticipate reading it over and over again as I continue the journey ahead. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to excel in medicine and a perfect gift for friends/family of those who do. As an investment in your future, you will not regret getting this book!

Dr Richard Lee’s book is a practical guide with actionable steps from personal experience for any aspiring medical student. Even as a non-traditional applicant, it was easy to relate my current position to one of the many scenarios outlined in the book. It is straight forward with detailed instruction designed to assist you in creating a concrete plan to achieve the ultimate goal of a fulfilling career in medicine.
