The Story of Britain from the Norman Conquest to the European Union, by Patrick Dillon

From Booklist

After an introduction that opens with the Roman invasion of Britain and speeds through the next 11 centuries, this hefty volume officially begins with the Norman Conquest and provides a chronological history of England and, to a lesser extent, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The writing is mainly factual, but its short chapters take a narrative approach and include some quotes that are apparently invented; no sources are given at all. Although the occasional fact is questionable (Americas Declaration of Independence is credited to Washington as well as Jefferson), Dillon offers plenty of solid history as well. Printed in color, Lynchs fine paintings brighten the four-page illustration sections that open each of the six sections. The books design features a handsome jacket and a ribbon bookmark. However, most pages are text-heavy and illustrated only with the occasional map or, in each sections time line, small black-and-white pictures. Though not a replacement for more authoritative volumes, this book offers a very readable introduction to an enormous subject. Grades 6-8. --Carolyn Phelan

As other reviewers have said, this is a fantastic book for kids and for adults to want a broad outline of the events of British history. I love the writing style as it it told as more of a story than just a recounting of events. I do think more pictures would make it more engaging for some younger readers, but considering the amount of content that is covered, it is understandable that they are limited. Highly recommend this book for both kids and adults who are interested in history.

Best comprehensive history book for the FAMILY. My husband and I loved the one page summary of anything that's ever happened in Britain. My parents ordered this book after staying with us for a few days because they were so impressed! I tell everyone who is planning a trip to the UK with children to BUY THIS BOOK!

This is an excellent comprehensive history of Britain from the Norman Conquest to the present. It is so well-written and an easy read that history buffs would enjoy it for the fun of it, and neophytes will learn a great deal from it. I originally purchased it for my 15-year-old for a school project, but I found myself reading it from cover to cover and loving it. Give it a go - it's worth the read!

well organized, includes timelines and some maps, clear chapter titles. excellent to-the-point overview for those of us trying to get a grasp of the general history of Great Britain. it is a young adult read but way better than lengthy, wordy, over-puffed-up adult reads. I bought this to keep as a personal reference as I read more about this country and its history. the library wanted back the copy I had borrowed!.

Although it seems to be written in the style of a fairy tale book for children, I found this book to be surprisingly encompassing and vivid despite its short pages. Each era or major event/element of an era with its primary historical figures is talked about in always 1-2 page summaries. Amazingly, the timeline still flows well enough, the roles of people explained enough that the telling of the history moves very smoothly and explanatorily. You'd think that for a short overview of the past millennium of British history, that there are some things that wouldn't be mentioned. Yet somehow, all the key points are there, and the storytelling format also provides an exceedingly effective view of history as how it came to be rather than simply a series of facts.Even if it might be for children (I'm actually not so sure what the author's original intention was!), this is a wonderful read for anyone who simply wants a concise or introductory read to British (or more specifically, English) history.

Written by Patrick Dillon and illustrated by P.J. Lynch, "The Story of Britain" is a chronological account of Britain's history, from the arrival of Julius Caesar to the present day. It also includes plenty of chapters on Scotland, Ireland and Wales, though the emphasis is on England and its relationship with its people, its immediate neighbors, and the rest of the world.Divided into seven parts, the book goes through eleven centuries worth of history, starting with a brief introduction that covers Britain's earliest history (55BC to 1066) and then starting properly with the arrival of William the Conqueror. From that starting point, the book contains the following chapters: "The Middle Ages" (1069 - 1492), covering the Norman Conquest, the Plantagenets, the Hundred Years War, the Black Death and the War of the Roses; "The Tudors" (1487 - 1603), covering Henry VII, the Reformation, Bloody Mary, and Queen Elizabeth; "The Stuarts" (1605-1690) covering the Civil War, the execution of King Charles I, Oliver Cromwell and the Restoration; "The Georgians" (1692 - 1815) covering colonization, the American and French Revolution, Napolean Bonaparte and the Battle of Waterloo; "The Victorians" (1812 - 1914) covering the Industrial Revolution, Queen Victoria, the Crimean War and the Edwardians; and finally "The Twentieth Century" (1914 - 1999) covering the two World Wars and their aftermath. And that's just scratching the surface. Dillon also mentions hundreds of other people, events and places, though in saying that, the sheer density of the subject matter means that only the barest details can be explored, and some famous figures are only name-dropped. Yet Dillon does not simply recount historical events, but also takes a few chapters to explore the changing mentalities of people as the world changed around them: concepts such as the Renaissance, the rise of scientific experimentation, different philosophies, the Romantics, technology, and what they all did for political, social and economic development.Specifically for children, "The Story of Britain" is a narrative account of the most important events in Britain's history, often personifying the various countries (ie, "Britain thought..." or "Ireland said...") or using dramatic license in order to convey information (ie, the deaths of the young Princes Edward and Richard are overheard by a boatman rowing toward London Bridge) or descriptive phrases to provide immediacy: "Freedom was in the air, like the smoke from a bonfire that spreads from street to street to make people all over town raise their heads."In much the same tone, Dillon makes many comparisons to the present day in order to better illustrate the points he's trying to make, as when describing the Irish Famine: "Today, most people in Britain and Ireland don't know what it is like to starve. They don't know how It feels to have an aching belly at dinnertime but no dinner to eat, so that the ache grows into a pain. They don't know what it is like to wake in the morning and find the pain still there, sharper and crueler. Children don't know what it is like to ask their parents for food and be given nothing."Dillon focuses on the themes of freedom, representation and human rights, being careful to emphasis the importance of things such as the Magna Carta, the Reform Act, the end of slavery and the suffragettes - in fact, this entire book could be described as Britain's centuries-long journey toward equality and liberty for all. Furthermore, if the book has a message to impart, it's that of the importance of tolerance and the dangers of power. Often Dillon adds his personal wisdom to the text, and has no qualms about judging the past by today's standards. At one point he says: "Too much power spoils people, and the British had too much power," and later: "Religion stops people from thinking fairly when it makes them sure they're right and everyone else is wrong," as well as "Wise decisions can bring lasting peace, but bad ones lead to centuries of bitterness." Such comments would be disallowed in an adult's reference book, but here they are welcome morals for young readers to absorb. But despite the grim nature of many of the events explored here, Dillon keeps up a sense of optimism, getting across the sense that importance lies not with the fact that slavery, imperialism, war and exploitation existed, but that people - and eventually entire countries - decided that such things were wrong and should be stopped. As the book lengthens, he often makes comparisons; demonstrating how history repeats itself, either tragically:"Revolutions often go wrong. They start with high hopes but end in confusion and fear, and when everything has fallen in to chaos, people turn to the strongest man they can find to rescue them. That was what happened after the civil war in Britain, when Oliver Cromwell took control. And when the French Revolution ended in terror and death, the French turned to an army general called Napolean Bonaparte."Or ironically:"Eisenhower decided to invade Normandy, from where William the Conqueror had attacked Britain a thousand years before...some of the soldiers remembered being rescued from Dunkirk four years earlier. Now they were going the other way, to win France back again."Or to provide insight:"Today we know plague is spread by fleas carried on rats, but doctors in those days didn't know where it came from and had no medicines to cure it."As well as this, the book is filled with italicized quotes from famous people, including Geoffrey Chaucer, Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Issac Newton, Charles Dickens, Horatio Nelson, Winston Churchill, plus many more, and Dillon explains the origins of several words and idioms such as "boycott," "Exchequer", and "a man with a South Sea face." Illustrations are done by the wonderful P.J. Lynch, who has provided several striking watercolors depicting everything from the murder of Thomas Beckett to Admiral Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. I've been a big fan of P.J. Lynch's illustrations for many years; my only complaint is that there isn't enough of them here!If you're on the lookout for a well-written, beautifully-designed history book, then "The Story of Britain" would make a fantastic gift for a budding history buff. It is elegantly formatted, with maps and timelines included at the end of each section, as well as a ribbon bookmark and a comprehensive index.

Chasing Francis by Ian Morgan Cron is a novel about a man's faith as inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. This fictional novel about a conservative minister seeking to renew his faith is a mix of "journal entries" and prose / dialogue. Since I do not generally read fiction (I probably read fewer than five fiction books per year, compared to over 300 non-fiction books per year)-- I did not have a high expectation for this. I mean, come on- religious fiction? But I was pleasantly surprised. This book was an easy enough read and held my interest more or less, although this genre isn't anything I'd likely come back to. I have enough non-fiction material on my to read list to last a lifetime. Most books on spirituality only mention St. Francis in passing if at all, so using him as a spiritual leader and guide to Christianity was an interesting change of pace. I think the author was writing through some pretty rosy colored glasses though, in his outlook.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255 : "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

This book grabbed my attention when it flashed across my RSS feed one day. The cover showed a small stone church against a clearly Italian backdrop. The title mentioned “Francis” and I rightfully assumed it was St Francis of Assisi and not Francis Underwood. Having recently discovered Saint Francis I was pretty much sold. The synopsis on Amazon closed the deal. The story is presented as the first-person memoirs of Pastor Chase Falson. Chase grew up without solid faith background, however during college he had fallen in love with Christianity. After graduation he spent his adult life dedicating to building an evangelical mega church in his home state of Connecticut. His spiritual life had seemed perfect for many, but it was beginning to show cracks. Things begin slowly when Chase experiences doubts about the certainty his evangelical worldview and theology had always provided. In an exchange over a game of racquetball he admits these doubts to a trusted confidant:“Why do I have this sneaking suspicion that I’ve been reading from a theological script someone else wrote? Is this my faith, or one I bought into as a kid without really thinking about it? Why do I feel ashamed that I have doubts and questions? My faith used to be so full of life; now it all seems so beige. Sometimes I get so angry I want to punch a wall.“How come?” asked Mac.“I was sold a bill of goods,” I said, tapping my racket head against the floor.“By whom?”“It’s hard to put a finger on. The Christian subculture, I guess. That tiny slice of the world used to be all I needed. Now I think it overpromises and underdelivers.”For months, anything that even remotely smacked of evangelicalism had been posing a challenge to my gag reflex.Everything falls apart when the daughter of a dedicated and formerly drug addicted parishioner is killed in an accident. The girl’s mother asks Chase how the God he’s been trying to teach her to follow could do this or even allow it to happen. Chase is undone. The answers he’s been taught to give for these situations seem calloused and empty. The following Sunday , in a moment of vulnerability he bares his soul to the congregation. He shares his frustrations, doubts, and struggles. After service the elder board decides to send Chase on a “sabbatical” until the they decide if they want him to continue leading their church.During his time away from church Chase goes to Italy to stay with his uncle, a Franciscian Monk. During his time there he is introduced to a new perspective through the old ways of Saint Francis. He keeps a journal of his thoughts as he visits important Franciscan landmarks, devours books about Francis’ life and teachings, and comes into contact with people whose Christian faith looks so much different than what he’s ever been exposed to. He begins to see how Francis’ understanding of God could have huge implications on not for himself, but the church and the world.I related very deeply with the main character of this book. The forces of spiritual deconstruction seems to build under the surface over a long period of time. What begins as honest searching and seeking seems to lead to conclusions that were never expected. Eventually a few cracks begin to appear in the certainty that held your faith for so long. Then, one day, the walls crumble and all the ways you understand faith, God, and life seem to drain away. It’s confusing and disorienting not only for those who experience it first hand, but for those around them.I envied Chase’s freedom to run away from everything and disconnect while he figured things out. Oh how nice it must have been to put himself back together before facing friends and family. In fairness that aspect of the story also felt fake. I couldn’t relate to the way events and circumstances seemed to work out perfectly after his melt down. It stank of the aforementioned “evangelical bill of goods.” An entire spiritual deconstruction resolved in the span of a few weeks. If only! There may be better places to go if you are interested in learning about Saint Francis, but this wouldn’t be a horrible jumping off point. It gives an overview of Francis’ life and teachings within the context of a very compelling narrative. While the story of Chase has it’s thin moments, the culmination was very realistic and inspiring. I recommend this book to anybody questioning evangelicalism or going through theological/spiritual deconstruction. It’s a fun read and a lighthearted distraction from some of the other heavy reading you may be doing on the subject. I think many readers will definitely resonate deeply with the characters and feelings expressed in this book.

Chasing Francis gets my vote for Most Unique Book of 2018. It's a novel that reads like a memoir; sometimes I had to stop and remind myself it was fiction. Novel or memoir though, we definitely need more like it in the book world. Protagonist Chase Falson deals with relatable issues on every level, but especially the spiritual level. His dissatisfaction with pat answers, thirst for "more" of God, and questions about whether or not the church and Christianity should do things differently, are questions I have too, although I don't always take the time to wrestle with them.Chase's pilgrimage to Italy is written fairly sparsely, but with enough detail to keep the book interesting. Fortunately, the journey doesn't read like a travel guidebook. It's a pilgrimage in every sense of the word. Chase truly "chases" Francis of Assisi, and made me want to do it, too--or chase my own saint, based on who I am and where my journey might lead. I especially appreciated that Ian Morgan Cron brought together the Catholic and evangelical traditions. Not in so many words, he uses Chase's story to tell us evangelicals to stop being afraid of Catholics and Catholicism. Amen. From experience, the fact that my own tribe (evangelical) is often more consumed with being right than righteous, is a turn-off--and I'm as guilty as anyone else.Speaking of which, Chasing Francis does a good job of stepping on toes when it needs to. Carla's assertion that "your biggest problem is you" certainly got me thinking, as did Chase's realization that Christians will tear the church down before trying to truly make things better. Ouch! Still thinking about that. The secondary characters and exquisite setting add spice to the story, as does a good balance of internal conflict and external consequences. I think God definitely spoke to me through this book, though precisely what He said and is saying, I'm still pinning down. In the meantime, I definitely want more books like this and recommend that any Christian from any denomination, pastoral or layperson, read it.

I haven’t read this one yet, but my 7-year-old loves it and has told me about it - in depth. We received it in our book children’s book club shipment. He’s very impressed that it’s a true story and he’s gone through it several times, keeping it close to him for easy reach. Very happy with it.

Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech is a heartprint book that is masterfully told. And, while this is a story about saving a donkey, Creech has woven in so much more. It is a tale about a boy who struggles to find his purpose, a girl who’s afraid to love, and a family who misses a son who's away serving our country. This is a story of believing and loving and finding ourselves in the world around us. I highly recommend.

This book is a quick read with so much heart. You will want to read it all at once and then read it again because it is so filled with emotion. An outstanding book for growth mindset as well. Would also make a wonderful read aloud for younger grades.

Sharon Creech always writes books that appeal to kids, parents and teachers. She did it with a book called Moo, and now with Saving Winslow. How many books have you read where the main character is a donkey? I loved every minute of this delightful book! I will be using this one in my presentations this year. Sharon Creech, you are a gem in the world of children's literature! Thank you for all your books!!

Very well written but left you wanting to know what happens next.

Quick read. I realize it wasn't written for adults, but it was a tad on the boring side. It was still a very sweet story. My 9 year old daughter really liked the book. She said it's one of her favorites.

My 3rd grader couldn’t stop reading this book. She gushed about it and was sad when she finished bc she loved it so much! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

Always a good story from Sharon Creech, this is no exception.

Great read for kids for bookreport

Could things get any worse for Choon-yi, born with only one arm in a poor peasant family in China? She makes the best of the situation by creating and selling paintings. She is rightfully concerned when her beloved father accepts a perilous job building railroads in America. When she travels to see him, she endures heartbreak before discovering that her magical talent can help her father and many others. The beautiful oil paintings have a gloomy dark brown tint that adds to the melancholy mood of the text. This winner of the 1997 Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Medal effectively uses the subdued pictures to compliment the text. I found this to be a powerful book, even though it is written and illustrated with a gentle touch.

HOW TROUBLE WITH PARSNIPS GOT STARTED: In school, I was the girl who didn't sharpen her pencil because she didn't like going up in front of the classroom. The pencil sharpener is too noisy! Everyone will look at me.For years, I didn't know what my teachers looked like, but I have the tile memorized. TROUBLE WITH PARSNIPS is about a much braver and more inventive person, the kind of person who looks up and sees everyone. The kind I want to learn to be.As a grown-up, I went to a Toastmasters International club that helps people learn how to speak up in the right way at the right time. It's like Girl or Boy Scouts because you can earn "badges" for learning how to stand up in front of others. :)At the time, I was a Girl Scout Leader, so our Troop tried everything out at our meetings. Nobody looked at the floor. After a while, the girls ran the whole meeting. It was cool.So I started writing about a princess who didn't think she could ever give a speech.

This is a terrifically inventive tale about a princess (the youngest of 15 children) who needs a name, fast--and the clock is ticking... The stakes are high, not only for her but for the whole kingdom, and I found myself reading faster and faster as I neared the end. I also fell in love with the entire Cochem Kingdom, a wonderfully quirky place where the characters are obsessed with library books (yay!), good quality parsnip fries, and excellent, rollicking speeches. What a fun, satisfying read!

The Trouble With Parsnips is the story of a spunky princess who is a go-getter and inventor, but who will remain nameless until her christening, which is a decade overdue. But to achieve this, she will have to face her fears of speaking in public. The story follows her adventures as she saves the kingdom from the Blackfly Queen and faces her own fears. Lots of magical details and quirky characters with a positive message and fun heroine.
