Chasing Francis by Ian Morgan Cron is a novel about a man's faith as inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. This fictional novel about a conservative minister seeking to renew his faith is a mix of "journal entries" and prose / dialogue. Since I do not generally read fiction (I probably read fewer than five fiction books per year, compared to over 300 non-fiction books per year)-- I did not have a high expectation for this. I mean, come on- religious fiction? But I was pleasantly surprised. This book was an easy enough read and held my interest more or less, although this genre isn't anything I'd likely come back to. I have enough non-fiction material on my to read list to last a lifetime. Most books on spirituality only mention St. Francis in passing if at all, so using him as a spiritual leader and guide to Christianity was an interesting change of pace. I think the author was writing through some pretty rosy colored glasses though, in his outlook.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from NavPress as part of their book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255 : "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."

This book grabbed my attention when it flashed across my RSS feed one day. The cover showed a small stone church against a clearly Italian backdrop. The title mentioned “Francis” and I rightfully assumed it was St Francis of Assisi and not Francis Underwood. Having recently discovered Saint Francis I was pretty much sold. The synopsis on Amazon closed the deal. The story is presented as the first-person memoirs of Pastor Chase Falson. Chase grew up without solid faith background, however during college he had fallen in love with Christianity. After graduation he spent his adult life dedicating to building an evangelical mega church in his home state of Connecticut. His spiritual life had seemed perfect for many, but it was beginning to show cracks. Things begin slowly when Chase experiences doubts about the certainty his evangelical worldview and theology had always provided. In an exchange over a game of racquetball he admits these doubts to a trusted confidant:“Why do I have this sneaking suspicion that I’ve been reading from a theological script someone else wrote? Is this my faith, or one I bought into as a kid without really thinking about it? Why do I feel ashamed that I have doubts and questions? My faith used to be so full of life; now it all seems so beige. Sometimes I get so angry I want to punch a wall.“How come?” asked Mac.“I was sold a bill of goods,” I said, tapping my racket head against the floor.“By whom?”“It’s hard to put a finger on. The Christian subculture, I guess. That tiny slice of the world used to be all I needed. Now I think it overpromises and underdelivers.”For months, anything that even remotely smacked of evangelicalism had been posing a challenge to my gag reflex.Everything falls apart when the daughter of a dedicated and formerly drug addicted parishioner is killed in an accident. The girl’s mother asks Chase how the God he’s been trying to teach her to follow could do this or even allow it to happen. Chase is undone. The answers he’s been taught to give for these situations seem calloused and empty. The following Sunday , in a moment of vulnerability he bares his soul to the congregation. He shares his frustrations, doubts, and struggles. After service the elder board decides to send Chase on a “sabbatical” until the they decide if they want him to continue leading their church.During his time away from church Chase goes to Italy to stay with his uncle, a Franciscian Monk. During his time there he is introduced to a new perspective through the old ways of Saint Francis. He keeps a journal of his thoughts as he visits important Franciscan landmarks, devours books about Francis’ life and teachings, and comes into contact with people whose Christian faith looks so much different than what he’s ever been exposed to. He begins to see how Francis’ understanding of God could have huge implications on not for himself, but the church and the world.I related very deeply with the main character of this book. The forces of spiritual deconstruction seems to build under the surface over a long period of time. What begins as honest searching and seeking seems to lead to conclusions that were never expected. Eventually a few cracks begin to appear in the certainty that held your faith for so long. Then, one day, the walls crumble and all the ways you understand faith, God, and life seem to drain away. It’s confusing and disorienting not only for those who experience it first hand, but for those around them.I envied Chase’s freedom to run away from everything and disconnect while he figured things out. Oh how nice it must have been to put himself back together before facing friends and family. In fairness that aspect of the story also felt fake. I couldn’t relate to the way events and circumstances seemed to work out perfectly after his melt down. It stank of the aforementioned “evangelical bill of goods.” An entire spiritual deconstruction resolved in the span of a few weeks. If only! There may be better places to go if you are interested in learning about Saint Francis, but this wouldn’t be a horrible jumping off point. It gives an overview of Francis’ life and teachings within the context of a very compelling narrative. While the story of Chase has it’s thin moments, the culmination was very realistic and inspiring. I recommend this book to anybody questioning evangelicalism or going through theological/spiritual deconstruction. It’s a fun read and a lighthearted distraction from some of the other heavy reading you may be doing on the subject. I think many readers will definitely resonate deeply with the characters and feelings expressed in this book.

Chasing Francis gets my vote for Most Unique Book of 2018. It's a novel that reads like a memoir; sometimes I had to stop and remind myself it was fiction. Novel or memoir though, we definitely need more like it in the book world. Protagonist Chase Falson deals with relatable issues on every level, but especially the spiritual level. His dissatisfaction with pat answers, thirst for "more" of God, and questions about whether or not the church and Christianity should do things differently, are questions I have too, although I don't always take the time to wrestle with them.Chase's pilgrimage to Italy is written fairly sparsely, but with enough detail to keep the book interesting. Fortunately, the journey doesn't read like a travel guidebook. It's a pilgrimage in every sense of the word. Chase truly "chases" Francis of Assisi, and made me want to do it, too--or chase my own saint, based on who I am and where my journey might lead. I especially appreciated that Ian Morgan Cron brought together the Catholic and evangelical traditions. Not in so many words, he uses Chase's story to tell us evangelicals to stop being afraid of Catholics and Catholicism. Amen. From experience, the fact that my own tribe (evangelical) is often more consumed with being right than righteous, is a turn-off--and I'm as guilty as anyone else.Speaking of which, Chasing Francis does a good job of stepping on toes when it needs to. Carla's assertion that "your biggest problem is you" certainly got me thinking, as did Chase's realization that Christians will tear the church down before trying to truly make things better. Ouch! Still thinking about that. The secondary characters and exquisite setting add spice to the story, as does a good balance of internal conflict and external consequences. I think God definitely spoke to me through this book, though precisely what He said and is saying, I'm still pinning down. In the meantime, I definitely want more books like this and recommend that any Christian from any denomination, pastoral or layperson, read it.

Review

“In folksy language matching Annie's quoted quips, Fern recounts Annie's campaigns to protect mustangs. . .Salerno's sun-drenched illustrations capture the equally hardy spirits of the mustangs and Annie herself. . .An uplifting tale of animal rights, perseverance, and kids' power to make a difference.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Salerno’s full-page mixed-media illustrations exude the expanse of the West and invite intimacy with Annie all while maintaining a playful air of adventure. Readers will root for Annie and the mustangs she fought to protect. Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech is a heartprint book that is masterfully told. And, while this is a story about saving a donkey, Creech has woven in so much more. It is a tale about a boy who struggles to find his purpose, a girl who’s afraid to love, and a family who misses a son who's away serving our country. This is a story of believing and loving and finding ourselves in the world around us. I highly recommend.

This book is a quick read with so much heart. You will want to read it all at once and then read it again because it is so filled with emotion. An outstanding book for growth mindset as well. Would also make a wonderful read aloud for younger grades.

Sharon Creech always writes books that appeal to kids, parents and teachers. She did it with a book called Moo, and now with Saving Winslow. How many books have you read where the main character is a donkey? I loved every minute of this delightful book! I will be using this one in my presentations this year. Sharon Creech, you are a gem in the world of children's literature! Thank you for all your books!!

Very well written but left you wanting to know what happens next.

Quick read. I realize it wasn't written for adults, but it was a tad on the boring side. It was still a very sweet story. My 9 year old daughter really liked the book. She said it's one of her favorites.

My 3rd grader couldn’t stop reading this book. She gushed about it and was sad when she finished bc she loved it so much! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!

Always a good story from Sharon Creech, this is no exception.

Great read for kids for bookreport

Could things get any worse for Choon-yi, born with only one arm in a poor peasant family in China? She makes the best of the situation by creating and selling paintings. She is rightfully concerned when her beloved father accepts a perilous job building railroads in America. When she travels to see him, she endures heartbreak before discovering that her magical talent can help her father and many others. The beautiful oil paintings have a gloomy dark brown tint that adds to the melancholy mood of the text. This winner of the 1997 Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Medal effectively uses the subdued pictures to compliment the text. I found this to be a powerful book, even though it is written and illustrated with a gentle touch.

From the Author

HOW TROUBLE WITH PARSNIPS GOT STARTED: In school, I was the girl who didn't sharpen her pencil because she didn't like going up in front of the classroom. The pencil sharpener is too noisy! Everyone will look at me.For years, I didn't know what my teachers looked like, but I have the tile memorized. TROUBLE WITH PARSNIPS is about a much braver and more inventive person, the kind of person who looks up and sees everyone. The kind I want to learn to be.As a grown-up, I went to a Toastmasters International club that helps people learn how to speak up in the right way at the right time. It's like Girl or Boy Scouts because you can earn "badges" for learning how to stand up in front of others. :)At the time, I was a Girl Scout Leader, so our Troop tried everything out at our meetings. Nobody looked at the floor. After a while, the girls ran the whole meeting. It was cool.So I started writing about a princess who didn't think she could ever give a speech.

This is a terrifically inventive tale about a princess (the youngest of 15 children) who needs a name, fast--and the clock is ticking... The stakes are high, not only for her but for the whole kingdom, and I found myself reading faster and faster as I neared the end. I also fell in love with the entire Cochem Kingdom, a wonderfully quirky place where the characters are obsessed with library books (yay!), good quality parsnip fries, and excellent, rollicking speeches. What a fun, satisfying read!

The Trouble With Parsnips is the story of a spunky princess who is a go-getter and inventor, but who will remain nameless until her christening, which is a decade overdue. But to achieve this, she will have to face her fears of speaking in public. The story follows her adventures as she saves the kingdom from the Blackfly Queen and faces her own fears. Lots of magical details and quirky characters with a positive message and fun heroine.

*sigh*This book gave me all the feels. From happy to sad, excited to nervous.Willa has been through so much and has come so far in her life after the accident that took her husband, Cary, too soon. She's made a life for herself and her son, Alex. Then there's Max. He left Cunningham Falls to make something for himself, which he did. From thinking that Willa would take him back after being gone for so long, to hear his best friend call up and say they were dating and then that he had proposed, must have been tough. It was the reality check he needed that he messed up one good thing he had in his life, Willa. After the accident, he stayed away. For 9 long years he avoided the woman he loved because of guilt and that's what she wanted at the time.I could go on about the backstory of this book. This is an amazing example of second chance love. I laughed, swooned, cried and cheered. It hits you someplace that leaves you craving more. The end of the book - I can't even. My emotions were all over the place. I was so incredibly happy and yet I was sobbing. The closure was everything that Max, Willa (and myself) needed. It was done in a beautiful way.Well done Ms Proby. If I wasn't already a one-click reader, I would be now.

I really wish Cunningham Falls was a real place. And I really wish that the characters in Kristen Proby's Big Sky series were real people. They are most definitely people I would love to get to know and hang out with!I have been anxiously awaiting the story behind Max Hull and Willa Monroe. We have had little teasers in previous books about how they had dated in high school, but had broken up. Max had moved away while Willa had a child and opened her own dress shop, but due to their past, Willa wanted nothing to do with Max. We find out in Waiting for Willa that Max and Willa broke up when he decided to move away from Cunningham Falls, wanting to spread his wings and see what it was like in a big city. Willa moved on and fell in love with Max's best friend, Cary, who unfortunately passed away, leaving Willa a widow with an unborn child. Since then, Max and Willa are hardly ever alone, and Max has respected Willa's wishes to stay away from her, despite still having feelings for her. These two have some undeniable chemistry! I absolutely love Max and Willa together! I love how strong Willa is, not wanting to depend on others (a trait I often see in myself) when it comes to her shop or her son, Alex. I love that Max complements her, and allows her to remain so independent, while supporting her dreams and wishes. I think one of my favorite things about Kristen Proby's writing is that she writes such strong and independent women, and men that love them, support them, and push them to be everything that they can.I absolutely loved these two characters, I absolutely love this series, and I absolutely recommend Waiting for Willa!!

This entire Big Sky Series is terrific, but Waiting For Willa is over-the-top fantastic! There’s just something about a second-chance romance, especially when it’s been several years and a lot of life has happened for the main characters. But gird your heart and grab the tissues, because this one has some heavy emotion.Max and Willa were childhood sweethearts until Max decided Cunningham Falls was too small for his big dreams and left. Now that he's made his millions, he's back home and wants another chance with Willa. But Willa isn’t the same person she was ten years ago. She's gotten married, had a baby and made a home. Now she's a single mother to a nine-year-old boy and she owns a dress shop in town. This is a quick easy read that really hits the heart. There were some incredibly touching moments which, based on the synopsis, I can’t tell you details of without spoiling things. Let's just say there is a slight paranormal element and some things between Max and Willa's son, Alex, with Max sharing memories of his best friend, that are truly beautiful. As we can always count on with Proby's books, this one has the humor and heat to go along with the heart, and it's definitely a 1-Clicker.*I reviewed this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.

I absolutely don't know where to begin! We saw Max and Willa tiptoe around each other in Kissing Jenna and I was instantly intrigued with their back story. I knew it would be good, I had no idea it would also be so heart-wrenching though.Theirs was a complex relationship loaded with lots of history and heartache. But, sometimes you get a second chance because you weren't quite ready the first time, and no one deserves a second chance at happiness more than Willa and her sweet son, Alex. And Max was just the person to offer them that shot at happiness; not only wooing Willa, but also building a strong bond with Alex too.Watching these three navigate to a new sense of normal was beautiful and endearing. Kristen Proby delivers another five star read; from the prologue to the epilogue, you'll be hanging on every word. ❤

This is the 3rd book series but I think it is my favorite so far. We have met Max and Willa in Max's siblings books and now we finally get the whole story about what is going on with these two.I was happily surprised that what I though was going to be the issue between them was so far off base. It's a perfect second chance at love romance. The author throws in her typical humor, the love of family and in this one--a darn cute kiddo and a dog to boot!I loved that Max and Willa never really fell out of love, they just fell away. Yes, Willa loved another for awhile but her heart and Max's remembered each other. It's one of the reasons I like the second chance romances--already friends and sometimes lovers, we fell apart but all the getting to know you stuff is already out of the way.Great writing, great characters and a great setting! Nice to catch up with some familiar faces as well. Fine to read as a stand alone but so much better having read the previous books!
