It's Okay to be Different encourages readers to accept themselves and others."―Children's Literature"[Parr] wisely doesn't zero in on specifics, which would force him to establish what's 'normal.' My daughter is 6, she has grown up with one of her closest friends having Down syndrome. But when she made her way to public school in first grade there were difference in religion, clothing, appearances, and language that she was being faced with. And as all children do, she started to ask questions about why her new friends weren't like her old friends. So we bought this book after seeing it in a store, and she loved it!!!!As a mommy, I loved it because t blended serious differences with silly ones, that helped keep her attention. The drawings assist in keeping her attention and created a visual representation of what the book was talking about.Weeks after purchasing and reading the book, she brings it up and talks about it when we are out and about and see things that make every person different. It really helped me explain mental illnesses, religion, and other things that make people different, but not visually different. It also helped her to defend a friend at school that was getting picked on for not celebrating Halloween, she explained to the kids about all of the ways that people can be different. One proud mommy!!!! And a grateful mommy for a book that helped simplify a difficult conversation.

Thanks goes to the author for reminding me that’s it okay to different. That message will come through loud and clear to anybody who reads the book, regardless of age. At the moment in United States Children need to hear this message because they’re not getting it from the leaders of nation. Also, the book has an incredible range of subjects. In other words, I don’t think the author misses a subject that a teacher or parent can use at home or school.

This is a wonderful book that every family/teacher should have in their home/classroom. It's about diversity and inclusion. I kick off our year by reading this to my kiddos. Then we reflect on what is different about us (having a twin, wearing glasses, being small, having a weird pet, etc.). We then make our own pages about ourselves to display for the year.

You can never go wrong with a Todd Parr book! Anytime I see this author's name, I know the book will be colorful, engaging, and funny while teaching important values such as acceptance, diversity and love. Here might be Parr at his greatest -- a book that is hilarious, never preach-y, and the title sums up the biggest lesson Parr teaches in all of his work: it's okay to be different! I got this for my 15-month-old who is too young to sit and read with me (well, he'll sit with me while I read but he'll start chewing the book or turning the pages too quickly!) yet every night, when I ask him to bring me a book to read to him, he is almost guarenteed to grab one of Todd Parr's multi-colored books. I'm so very happy to have Parr's books in my young boy's library so he can grow up enjoying quality literature that imparts important lessons. It's Okay To Be Different uses metaphors children will understand to describe or allude to real life differences - it's okay to have a big nose, with an illustration of an elephant and his trunk; it's okay to be from somewhere else - like outer space!Simply put, this book is a muts for any child's collection. Whether you're starting a library for a baby-to-be or adding to a preschoolor's books, this story will be a great addition.

Great book to use when teaching children how to respect others and understand that not everyone is the same. I work with 4-5yr olds and as they listened all of them found something in the book to relate to. Which lead to a discussion afterwards about how "people can be the same but still not the same" (their words). After reading this story I noticed the children respecting each other more.

If you're looking for fun children's books that are progressive, creative, and that send positive messages, these are the books to buy! As the sole parent of a six-month-old, I have been looking for books on alternative families that I will be able to read my son when he begins to discern our family from other (two parent) families. I came across Parr's "The Mommy Book" and "The Family Book," which include a diverse array of both traditional and non-traditional families. I also purchased "It's Okay to Be Different" and "The Feelings Book," which provide simple yet fantastic ideas for conversations around healthy expressions of behavior and identity. I'm now a dedicated Todd Parr fan (you should "like" him on Facebook, if you're a user, to keep abreast of his activities and updates. He resides in the Bay Area and occasionally holds readings out there).

My almost 4 year old just LOVES this book. It teaches kids that is OK to be different and to have different families and it's colorful and fun to read. Would HIGHLY recommend!

This book is so much fun to read with my young sons - they love the colorful illustrations. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I got the paperback copy instead of hard cover and I'd much rather have a sturdier book than the paperback is.
