Can't believe I hadn't read Hunter before. This book was eye opening and mind blowing and crazy. Probably not the best place to start reading Hunter's work, but I enjoyed the style and the attitude and I am going to read more of his stuff. I'm a big believer in the corruption of both political parties and the fact that America has failed as a democratic republic. It's too bad, it was a good idea.If you like politics, you should read this.
Hunter Thompson takes stock in his tumultuous life and assesses the current situation in America in a very aptly titled book. At its best, Kingdom of Fear evokes the glory days of Thompson. At its worst, it wallows in some rather pitiful encounters which may have been better left unsaid, such as his flirtation with an 8-year-old Xania.Thompson launches into the current administration, as it inflicts its reign of terror on the civil liberties in this country. He recalls his bouts with the law, in particular a sordid case involving a former porn queen who takes him to court for allegedly abusing her at his home in Aspen. While he managed to survive these battles, he doesn't hold out much hope for the future because of the notorious Patriot Act.But, his thoughts range far and wide, taking in his early years in Louisville and the proud highway to his remote home in Aspen, which he currently finds under seige from unscrupulous developers and former porn queens bent on ruining his mostly peaceful life. There is plenty of dark humor and pithy insights into the loathsome nature of the American dream. It is a very uneven book, but then that is what I have come to expect from Thompson, who hasn't been able to repeat his past great efforts such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.
Hunter writes a stunning review of life in US with heightened security and dangers to our freedoms. Must read for everyone, student and average citizen. We take so much for granted and put too much faith in those we have elected to represent us. He points out our misplaced good will and consequences. Be prepared his writing style is a bit disjointed, in that his storyline hops around a bit. Other reviewers complained he repeated his personal history once again, didn't take away from the narrative in my opinion. Highly recommend this book.
Book arrived a response usually reserved for the Queen. The story is so on the point, reading , I had to look at the publication date. 2001.
I love his style and how he gives not a wit what you think of him. the real deal. great stories.
This book (2003) and "Hey Rube" (2004) appear to be the last of HST's books. While "Hey Rube" contains lengthy discussions of gambling on professional football and basketball (including "March Madness"), this book is more far-ranging, containing everything from Thompson's reminiscences of his youth to his (highly negative) thoughts on George W. Bush. There's even a chapter from "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972," one of the finest political books ever written.The quality of the writing on the recent pieces is not quite up to that of his best from the past, but is still infinitely better than the mindless slop produced by other contemporary "writers." The man was an artist.As always, one of the disturbing things about Thompson is his ability to assess politics correctly in real time. Reading back, you think "Why didn't people take this man seriously at the time?""Indeed," as Doc would say.
Yeah, there's some recycled material in here, but that's like complaining about a Beatles album using some of the same great songs over and over again and those great songs never tiring. The thing with Hunter, is that anytime I read his work, I feel like I'm having a conversation with a dear friend I haven't seen in long time. I think this was his most sentimental and retrospective writing, of course done under the tapestry of our American Culture and where we are going wrong. I love this book and this writer and recommend it to any other human being.
Some tend to sell him short intellectually because of his reputation,(mostly unfounded-it sells books) but most of his political and other predictions are remarkably accurate. Good to see Amazon bring back some of the great authors, rather than a lot of the soap opera writers that seem to dominate Kindle's best seller lists. Hunter is sorely missed.
