About the Author
Marianne Barrucand read history, archaeology and history of art in Hamburg and Nancy, before obtaining her doctorate in the history of art in 1969. She went on to read Islamic studies at the Sorbonne, and, from 1971 to 1976, in Rabat, Morocco. In 1979 she submitted her professorial thesis in Islamic archaeology and art history, and since 1985 she has been Professor of Islamic Archaeology and Art History at the Sorbonne.

I have a feeling I will get some flack for this, but here we go; 4 stars for written content, 2 stars for pictures = 3 stars... The pictures are 'meh'. Now, the subject of the pictures are wonderful, but the quality of the pictures is lacking, IMHO. The information in the book, i.e. the written portion of the book, is not properly complimented by the pictures. If you are someone that is buying this book primarily for the writing, then this book may be for you. But if you are primarily buying this book for the pictures, then you may be let down.Now, I bought this book due to the spectacular reviews on this exact Amazon page. I am disappointed, because it does not live up to the reviews I read. With a little more care in the post-processing of the pictures and shot set-up, it would have been a winner! The price was great, though, so take this review with a grain of salt. Again, it really depends what you want to get out of this book.For me, a lot of the pictures looked washed out. The blacks look gray, and the color saturation is to low. They need to play with the shadows, light, saturation, brightness, contrast, color temperature, etc, to bring out the best in the pictures. I bought 3 books at the same time I bought this book from Amazon, and this one is the only one that has this problem.If the contrast is not done correctly, the light and dark parts of your picture begin to blend together, making hard for your eyes to focus on details, and you lose the depth of your picture. It is NOT a hard thing to fix, if you are willing to take the time to do it. It looks like the photographer just pointed his camera, shot the picture, walked off, and was done. If the cameraman took the time to craft the picture, like the author did in crafting his sentences when writing this book, this book would have been a home run.Another thing, a lot of the pictures are in really bad lighting conditions. For example, why on earth would you take a picture of an absolutely beautiful building from the outside, but the trees adjacent to the building casting a huge shadow over half of the building?! Why didn't the photographer wait till high noon or something like that, where the maximum amount of sunlight was shining on your subject?I am not returning it, because I want to read the book, and the price was spectacular! But I wanted decent pictures as references for drawing/penciling. But due to the the washed out-edness (is that a word?) of the pictures, I find myself gravitating towards the other 2 books I bought at the same time as I bought this one. So, for drawing, this will not be used for that as much. The final thought, I'll include a couple of pictures i took of the pictures-in-the-book using my cell phone, and did quick adjustments with it. And they came out WAAAAYYYY better than the original pictures in the book, to prove a point: If you do some minor adjustments, your pictures just look better. I am NOT a pro photographer,, by any stretch of the imagination. I am just a guy with a Huawei Mate 9 mobile phone that likes pictures.
Excellent text that covers the important history that effected Moorish architecture in Spain as well as descriptions of the architecture itself. Excellent quality images. The only improvement would be to have more images that illustrate the text. Excellent glossary.

Georgeous photos, great table book. Interesting read about Andalusia.
After visiting the Alhambra, I wanted to learn more about the architecture of that culture and period.
Pictures and writings were both enlightening. Shots were colorful and some were ancient as well as new. I would recommend it to any architect or designer.
