That is very much not the case here. This book is about August, and parenting August.I have a daughter with severe autism and severe intellectual disabilities. Over and over, I almost cried at how the author understood this life. From the meeting with hospital staff where he expected to get answers and instead was basically brushed off, to the medical studies which had no interest in a child with such severe needs, to the twenty minutes he and his wife were able to spend celebrating their twenty year anniversary---he is describing the life we are living.But much more than that, I was touched by how August touched them. What moved me the very most was his description of the times he'd looked into August's eyes and felt the presence of something profound, something big enough that he no longer could describe himself as an atheist. I know that kind of moment, and too have been moved to being at least an agnostic by the feeling that has come over me in certain rare moments when I looked in my daughter's eyes.The author says in his leading note that if he didn't write about August's life, it would be as if the events that made up his life never happened. This book will make sure that is never the case, and I thank Chris Gabbard for writing it.
