With lovely deep reds and oranges, chicken soup yellows, and forest greens, we read the story of a childless bube, who is preparing for a lonely Passover meal. A shanda. When, oy, her matzo ball comes alive. A Matzo Boy Boy is born. Boy, Shmoy he tells her. He is a man, and off to make his way in the world and not in a soup bowl. He runs and she gives chase. As do the tailor, the rabbi, the yenta, and a wolf that is not as smart as he thought. In the forest, the matzo ball boy gets tired and hungry; he meets up with a poor man who isn't interested in giving chase. Let all who are hungry come and eat, so the boy comes to the poor man's cottage. When the matzo ball boy leans over to check out the poor family's soup... This humorous tale is a must have for your seder table or bookcase. Includes not a "glass tea" but something better, a glossary of 14 Jewish words
So.......I ordered this to put in my 3 year old Grandaughters easter basket.The first few pages that they allow you to read were cute and funny. I should have done my research! I was reading this to her and at the end an old couple pushes Matzo Ball Boy into a boiling vat of broth and he was never seen again! Speedy quick, I changed it to "The old couple adopted him, The end!!!!" The book has vanished for some reason.
My all time classic and favorite book of all time is the "Gingerbread Man". This Jewish variation of that book is hilarious. The illustrations are amazing and adorable and the storyline keeps up with the original just enough to be funny and endearing and reminiscent of my past love of the original. Highly recommend.
Will be using this in a comparison and contrast lesson (along with the Gingerbread Boy) with my students . I also bought the Cajun Cornbread Boy to use in class as well.
Amazon always has the best selection of multi-cultural books for all occasions. My students have really enjoyed learning about different cultures the through fun books like this! The prices are awesome as well!
Purchased for a teacher friend, this was used in a lesson on Gingerbread man. Kids loved this story.
I was expanding my gingerbread man unit and decided to give this a try. The Jewish religion/culture is completely foreign to my class of predominately-Hispanic children, but the story is fast-paced and they loved it. This story met several objectives for my class.
I love this multi-cultural take on The Gingerbread Man. It had very similar elements, but definitely had it's own take. The grandmother cracked me up. There was a little of humor. PIck it up today!
The grandchildren laugh out loud when we read this book together- it gives us all such pleasure!Thank you so very much.
