This is both a terrific and indispensable guide for the dedicated amateur who is rebuilding his Porsche 911 engine. It's extremely well-written, well-organized and superbly illustrated and, while it may not contain every last bit of information about 911 engines and their rebuilding and upgrading, it is certainly sufficiently comprehensive to enable an enthusiast with aptitude and some experience working on cars to successfully accomplish the rather intimidating task of rebuilding a 911 engine. I've had Bruce Anderson's "Porsche 911 Performance Handbook" for many years and have found it to be an incredibly informative and useful resource that I wouldn't want to be without. Wayne's book both compliments and supplements Bruce's book while intensifying the focus on the rebuilding process. It's amazing that one can get so much valuable information for so little, when considered in the context of the cost of a Porsche engine rebuild/upgrade. If you're serious about rebuilding your 911 engine and getting it right, or even if you're going to have a pro do it and you just want to better understand what's involved, you would be crazy not to get this book.
This has got to be one of the most well put-together automotive do-it-yourself books I've seen in some time, whether Porsche or otherwise. The photos are extremely clear and detailed, in contrast to most auto manuals (even the factory oftentimes). The instructions are informative and even present alternatives or commentary on aspects of the project (for example, mentioning that while the H4 headlight update gives better lighting, some people prefer the profile of the original earlier headlamps on SCs). In addition, the initial summary boxes, which give statistics such as complexity of the job, time necessary, approximate cost, tools needed, etc. makes it easier to select a project for your next weekend, based on how much free time you have available. An excellent publication.
Great book! Lots of great project ideas and some awesome step-by-step instructions.Done a couple projects in which one or two of the steps were not included in the book. Overall, I really like this guide and would recommend it to any 911 owner.
A must have for any air-cooled posche-file. Only issue is that all of the content is available for free on PelicanParts.com... Dempsey is the Owner of the website and writer of the book.
The skill ratings for the various projects might be a little optimistic, and the prices for the supplies are also a little low, but neither of these things take away from an excellent "how to" book that can get you through these kinds of projects on your own.The very first job you do will save you the cost of the book in shop labor charges, so on that basis it ought to get five stars from everyone who even uses it once. Hey, what's better than a free book?!? :)For anyone with a set of quality hand tools and the desire to do some of their own work on one of these classic cars, this book is a great resource to have on hand. I have no doubt I'll be buying another copy when I wear this one out. Or stain it with grease.
Very detailed instructions with lots of pictures for Porsche 911 projects.
I have been working on cars, shade tree not a professional, for over 20 years and this is the best book I have ever seen for technical details on `how to` tasks. Pictures are useful, descriptions are useful and concise... This book is a MUST for a 911 owner. Note, the guy from Pelican Parts is a mechanical engineering grad who loves cars... what better can it get ?
The explanations and instructions are insightful, clear, and greatly supported with colour images that are very helpful. The book is well organised and is definitely a "must have" in anyone's Porsche library. The 'projects' cover basic and advanced works from brakes, to engine, to suspension, to interiors, to electrical oriented mostly towards fixes. It's a PRICELESS reference to when you're taking your 911 to a mechanic--it's like a blue-print! The book also features an impressive and very helpful resource guide.
