Review

“A fascinating and chilling look at Nashville’s seedy underbelly, with a view of the city only the locals generally see. True crime aficionados are going to clamor for this well-told, intriguing tale of murder and betrayal. What other secrets might Bishop uncover?”   —J. T. Ellison, New York Times–bestselling author of Lie to Me“Bound to be one of the year’s most memorable true-crime books. A page-turner. Intriguing.   —John Ferak, bestselling true-crime author of Failure of Justice:  A Brutal Murder, An Obsessed Cop, Six Wrongful Convictions“A riveting, astonishing story of murder, betrayal, and corruption—but most of all, a story of a dogged amateur sleuth who spends almost two decades chasing leads, connecting nearly invisible dots, unearthing the truth, and attaining a measure of long-overdue justice for a murdered girl.”   —Jon Jefferson, of Jefferson Bass, author of the New York Times–bestselling Body Farm novels“An amateur detective on the trail of a fall guy wrongly convicted for a babysitter’s murder in Nashville in 1964 is a very good story, and when he hooks up with ‘the living Sherlock Holmes’ to find truth and justice, it’s a great story! Highly recommended.” —Michael Capuzzo, New York Times–bestselling author of The Murder Room and Close to Shore“Intrigued by some unanswered questions in the seemingly solved 1964 murder of Tennessee coed Paula Herring, researcher Michael Bishop begins to investigate the case and ends up uncovering the dark, shocking secrets at the heart of this decades-old mystery. A riveting real-life detective story that reads like page-turning fiction.”   —Harold Schechter, author of The Mad Sculptor: The Maniac, The Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation  “True-crime readers will find a unique opportunity within the pages of A Murder in Music City. The author did not simply report a story; he investigated a murder. Readers will experience the actual unfolding of the murder probe, with all the description and detail that come only from living the criminal investigation. Prepare to be enthralled by this inside look at an unforgettable story.”   —Jack and Mary Branson, authors of Delayed Justice: Inside Stories from America’s Best Cold Case Investigators"With the discovery of a secret file and aid of forensic investigators, Bishop gets to the root of [a] shocking crime and the decades-long cover-up. Compelling narrative nonfiction and an enthralling true murder story.”   —R. Barri Flowers, bestselling author of Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair and Murder at the Pencil Factory “Bishop...proves a surprisingly effective amateur sleuth in this gripping examination.” —Publishers Weekly

Let me begin by saying that I've been an avid reader my entire life, which, at this point, is 75 years. And I can say without fear of contradiction that this is possibly my all-time favorite. Michael Bishop has an uncanny skill set for writing. I have recommendedthis book to all members of my family - many of whom are physicians and engineers - and they are equally impressed. I was raised in Nashville, so that is another selling point for me. About a month ago, my wife and I drove to Nashville from our home in Columbia, Tenn,to help load boxes for Hurricane Relief, and while looking for the warehouse, we stumbled across the road where the murder took place.Very interesting! Congratulations, Mr. Bishop, on your outstanding documentary!

When I read about this book being on the best seller list in Nashville, I had to buy a copy. I have lived in Nashville most of my life, and grew up close to the Crieve Hall Area, and attended a High School that was a rival in sports to John Overton High, which Paula Herring, the subject of this book, attended. Just reading about the publication of this book bought back some major memories for me. Paula was a year ahead of me in school, and from my Freshman to Senior year in High School, I baby sat for a lovely couple of Metro teachers. One, the father, was a high school football coach, and the other, the mother, was a young PE teacher, and coach at Overton. I remember this event, and how upset my employer was over the murder of Paula Herring. I knew she had coached Paula in basketball, and this fact, plus all the news reports of this murder, lodged the event in my mind. Of course, I was young and very sheltered, and never knew about the conviction of a man who was most likely falsely accused of this heinous crime, but I have fond memories of my baby sitting days with this young couple, and their three lovely children. Imagine my amazement to see this couple mentioned in the book, the mother being interviewed by Mr. Bishop, and her telling him that this murder had haunted her for decades and that she was haunted by her own what if's. I knew nothing about the evils of Printer's Alley, prostitution, or drug addiction in Nashville at that time; I was a very innocent young girl who had not been exposed to the trials and tribulations that Paula had to endure. I'm also 90% sure that I was the one babysitting for this couple and their friends (six children in all) at 75 cents an hour) on the fatal night. I never knew my employer had spoken to Paula the very eve of her murder and the sad consequences of that conversation; now I see why this sad event haunted my young employer, even though she was entirely innocent of any wrong doing. I was also sad to learn, at the time of Mr. Bishop's research, Paula is resting in a grave with only a foot stone provided by the funeral home. She had, at the time of Mr. Bishop's visit, no headstone. I would like to see him lead a fund raiser, and yes I would be glad to contribute what I, a retired Metro Nashville teacher, could afford., for the purchase of a tombstone for Paula's grave. That's one wrong the citizens of Nashville could right. Paula Herring deserves that. I am glad that Michael Bishop persevered to try to find out the truth about this murder, and if Mr . Bishop's speculations about the culprits are true, and it appears that they are though we can never know for sure, this crime was even more heinous than anyone imagined.

The subject is true cold case crime investigation, but the engaging voice of the amateur forensic sleuth, whose intellectual enthusiasm has been captured by the possibility that the murderer of a young college student escaped justice, takes this out of the generic. I wanted the narrator to succeed as much as I wanted to know the solution to the mystery. The storytelling is straightforward - no cliff hangers or manufactured withholding of key information. The reader is riding along with the narrator in his quest to not only find out the truth, but also improve his investigative technique as he progresses from witness to witness, clue to clue. He's a great guy to hang out with, too, honest, polite, patient, even tempered, dedicated, without a single trace of self-indulgence or self-aggrandizement. not one moment of complaint from him - he's engaged in his quest, engaged in living, and makes you feel that way too. Enjoyable and compelling beginning to end. Recommended.

Although the writing is a little clunky and old fashioned cliches are sometimes used to describe characters, the story is presented in a thorough and orderly fashion. With so many facts and anecdotes to work with, the writer skillfully arranged and introduced all the events and characters in such an intriguing sequence to keep the reader constantly engaged. The description of the moral and ethical corruption of the power brokers of 1960's Nashville was just astounding to me. This was a book that was difficult to set aside. It was definitely suspenseful and satisfying to read. Highly recommended!

I grew up in Nashville and was in first grade and lived in the Crieve Hall neighborhood when this murder happened. I do remember hearing about it and about the little boy thinking his sister had spilled tomato juice on herself. It was very scary at the time for 6 year old me. What's scarier now is knowing all the corruption that was rampant at the time. It still was when I was growing up. The biggest eye opener was all the partying that went on! I was raised by very strict religious parents who didn't drink, so my childhood was quite sheltered. All I can say was wow! I really appreciate the time and effort that was spent researching by Mr. Bishop. I think he did a masterful job of piecing together what evidence he was able to glean after all these years and I think he's probably very close if not spot on in his resolution. I wish the man who was wrongfully convicted had still been alive and I hope it gives his family some peace as well as Alan Herring. This should be a must read for anyone who grew up in Nashville during that era.
