Great first contact plot but cold war plot dated.

Fade Out has been, and still is, one of my all-time favourite books.I read this book as a school kid and have re-read it now to revisit an 'old friend'... Crusoe, the main protagonist of this novel.Amazingly, this novel hasn't really 'dated' after all the time that has passed since it was written, with the exception of the Cold War suspicions that both the American and the Russian characters display toward each other. But, if viewed as an historic 'event' the storyline is a fresh science fiction concept that would translate very well to film.Something in the way Patrick Tilley describes what is happening resonates with me in such a way as to let me imagine exactly what is happening in this book at all times.I fully recommend this book to people looking to read an interesting, thought provoking and exciting novel.

I first read this book about ten years ago after having read Mission and loving it. The Author teases you into the story by making it sound so plausible, so every day. You could almost imagine seeing an article on one of the wire services about a problem with Radars around the world, that lasted a few minutes then faded away.Like so many things in life, we tend not to give the little things enough attention, and by implication, we allow them power over us.That is what Fade Out is to me, a reminder to always be vigilant.Thank you for a great book, that has stood the test of time, would make a great movie - hint hint..

Story is outstanding except the ending leaves the reader hanging for a conclusive ending. Good character development, suspenseful plot and a very interesting story. Begs for a sequel and a movie.

Timothy Keller was born and raised in Pennsylvania and educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. I wrote in a previous interview with Keller, “He has a healthy aversion to sanctimony and platitudes. He has a low tolerance for simplistic answers. Years of pastoral ministry in the hurly-burly of New York have given him a deep desire to articulate the Christian faith with integrity. Keller’s ability to frame old issues in fresh ways is a hallmark of both his teaching and writing. “I’ve read six other books by Keller, but Making Sense of God may now be my favorite.All the hallmarks of Keller’s writing appear. There is an integrative approach where wonderful quotes (no, I won’t use the overused “money” quotes!) from various disciplines are used throughout the book. Keller clearly keeps up in his reading, especially when it comes to philosophy, sociology, and cultural analysis. How many pastors do you know who have read Charles Taylor’s big book, A Secular Age not once, but three times? As Keller commonly says, he reads so widely because he is “desperate.” Many of us are beneficiaries due to Keller’s desperation.Another common feature of Keller’s approach, especially as it relates to skeptics, is what I like to call “incremental apologetics.” This is where the skeptic is moved ever slowly. No big jumps from A to Z. The skeptic is paid the respect he deserves. The skeptic is truly listened to, and maybe most importantly, is confident that Keller is portraying his positions accurately. Given these realities it is not surprising that Keller would realize a “prequel” to The Reason for God was needed.Related to the former is what I like to call “let’s talk on the bridge.” Keller models this well in both The Reason for God and in Making Sense of God. All sides are invited into a conversation (no bomb throwing allowed) where each participant is reminded that they utilize both faith and reason. This can be a tough sell for Christians and non-Christians alike, but it is crucial if real dialogue is to occur.Making Sense of God is strong at showcasing the problems of a materialistic worldview. The problems that ensue from the reductionism of believing that the physical world is the totality of existence are a particular strength of Making Sense of God. And Keller does not just use Christians to answer materialists like Stephen Pinker. Rather, he highlights other skeptics like Julian Barnes whose reflections on the beauty of Mozart’s Requiem made him wonder whether physical reality is the sum total of human existence.I close with one slight disappointment and a comment about source notes.First, the slight disappointment. Keller writes, “All of us have things we believe—including things we would sacrifice and even die for–that cannot be proven. But since these beliefs cannot be proved, does this mean we ought not to hold them, or that we can’t know them to be true? We should, therefore, stop demanding that belief in God meet a standard of universally acknowledged proof when we don’t apply that to the other commitments on which we base our lives.” Granted there is an important truth there, but believing or not believing in God is far more costly than other matters, so it is understandable why we might “demand” more evidence. There may be sufficient evidence for Christianity, but it is understandable why many of us would like more. I found this a bit too quick of a dismissal of an honest objection, something that is uncharacteristic of Keller.It may seem rather strange to finish this review with a comment about endnotes, but I must. I regularly scan the footnotes (these days they are almost always endnotes) to see whether the author has interacted with the best literature. Not only do Keller’s endnotes demonstrate his careful reading, but there really is a book within a book. My only concern here is that too many readers will forego reading the endnotes thinking they are unimportant, or simply too academic. For those willing to slow down and read the endnotes, they will find a treasure trove of bibliographic suggestions, further interaction, and fuller quotes.Tim Keller graciously responded to my "slight disappointment" with this:My point here was that both belief in a universe without a God (that things exist on their own, that moral obligation exists without God, and so on) and belief in a universe with God-take equal amounts of faith and reason to hold. Both views (I argue in the book) require major steps of faith, and both also have some good logical arguments on their side. Neither can demonstrably prove their position to all rational people. So I don’t think the objection--that belief in a universe with God must meet a higher standard of proof than believe in a materialistic-only universe—really holds true. — Tim Keller

Terrible Advice in this book. Obviously the person who has written this book has never seen anyone in status asthmaticus. In fact, I couldn't tell from this book if the author has any healthcare background or education whatsoever. The "information" in this book is superficial and does not even explain what exactly happens during an asthma attack. I've been a respiratory therapist for almost thirty years and had to see if this book had some new kind of miracle cure that I have not heard of, but it doesn't. Instead, it goes into the whole diet thing to cure asthma. Maybe there is a dietary component, but if there is, the author does nothing to convince the reader. There are no studies cited at all. It's like someone cobbled together a couple of magazine articles on the latest diet trends and decided to claim that if someone followed these claims, they would cure their asthma. There isn't a shred of proof presented that any of these claims have any merit at all. Not only is that poor writing, but it could also be extremely dangerous. Mr. Berko, have you EVER tried to resuscitate an asthma victim who goes unresponsive? Well I have, and it's extremely scary because the patient can be talking to you one minute and out the next, and trying to get air into their lungs is incredibly difficult.Also, just from a writing standpoint, this is horrible. I seriously think that someone pasted text from a language other than English into a Google interpretation app and used the outcome. The syntax and sentence structure is off making whatever the author is trying to say even more difficult to decipher.

I have purchased many books from Amazon, this is, by far, the worst. It seems to have been written by a junior high school student who gleaned his information from several magazine articles. The book does not live up to its title at all. Many of the sentences make no grammatical sense and are sloppily edited. Don't waste your money on this book.

This book tries to sell you something at the end to cure your asthma. That gets one star or less from me. All the info. in this book can be found by doing a free search on the internet. Do not waste your dollar.

Another waste - again if you've had asthma for more than 5 minutes you already know all this.

Waste of money. All it said was to eat vegetables and fruits. Nothing about curing it. Book should have had more substance.

This a short, poorly-written, scarcely-edited version of standard advice from those advocating a vegan diet of uncooked veggies, nuts and fruit.

Very helpful book. I personally don't suffer from asthma, but I have family members who do. I was surprised to read about some of the culprits and causes of asthma. I knew that food additives, preservatives, etc. can wreak havoc with health, but I hadn't associated them with breathing issues. This book gives some very helpful tips. It's a concise guide that I found very informative.

This book exceeded my expectations! Had it in my wish list while waiting for it to come out. Bought it as a gift for my boyfriend since we have the other original rosemary gladstar book. Honestly my only complaint is how sad and frankly envious I was when I realized there was no female focused counterpart written lol. That's not to say there isnt any good stuff in this book for women. I CAN'T wait to try out some of these recipes! Teeming with full color pictures and great info!

This is my 3rd or 4th book now by Rosemary Gladstar....she has such a wealth of knowledge and information to share and her books are so user friendly. I'm an herbalist at heart and very much a beginner and I find her books easy to read but with a wealth of information. I've purchased more advanced style books that lack so much info, yet her books are fantastic...love her!

Another great Book from Rosemary! Bought this for my husband. Rosemary is a wonderful herbalist and detailed author. I have most all of her books and can recommend them all.

As always Rosemary delivers high-quality images with her immeasurable skill of putting herbs to use and explaining it in a way everyone can understand. I had high hopes for this book simply because it had her name on it and I was not disappointed. Valuable information to have on hand at all times.

There are only a few herbals specifically for men, and this is one of them. The amazing Rosemary Gladstar does it again. She brought herbalism back to the US along with Susun Weed years ago. Get it.

Being a dude getting into herbal remedies this book is very helpful. I had heard some herbs are better or worse for males/females than others so good info to know. Easy to read and understand.

Sure to be the next big thing in the Shonen Jump world, MHA is already gaining enough momentum to be mentioned in the same discussions as One Piece or Naruto. The story is perfect for non-Japanese audiences as well as it has created a world which is both familiar for superhero fans while offering something very new and refreshing. It engages the audience as you feel for the main character Deku as he faces many trials and tribulations with a healthy dose of triumph. The plethora of characters are rich in personality and engaging. After reading the first volume, I`m completely hooked!! I can`t wait for the next volume and more!!The translation work done by Caleb Cook is worthy of it`s own review. It`s too often times the case that the translation is poorly done and god forbid gets in the way of the story. However, Caleb Cook`s translation is written in a way that is smooth and beautifully supplements the manga. A way that is NOT obtrusive. In addition, it`s clear that Caleb Cook has extensive experience in not only the Japanese language but the culture of Japan as well. As a half-Japanese half-American, I see too many obvious cases of translations being too literal or on the flip side much is lost in translation. This is not the case at all for this series. The subtle nuances of the Japanese language as well as culture is beautifully conveyed. I look forward to Caleb Cook`s future works in this series as well as other mangas.

Not wanting to accept reality or rather his "destiny", Izuku sets out, in anyway possible, to become a hero like his role model All Might. It isn't until he actually meets All Might that he is given his first real opportunity to become one.Pro's:•Great art style•Interesting characters•A likable and we'll rounded protagonist•Keeps you wanting more•A great start for volume 1Con's:•Can be a slow start for some readers•Has a lot more dialogue than some might be used to.Overall I can gladly say that this is a great first volume to start the series. The story, the characters, and the art style made me fall in love with My Hero Academia and because of this I'm excited to see where the story will go from here. (I already bought the 2nd and 3rd book!)If you like origin stories and need another Shonen Jump manga similar to Naruto or One Piece, and/or are not tired of the hero genre as of yet, then by all means buy this manga!

*My Hero Academia*, by Kohei Horikoshi, is a manga series that is in many ways a tribute to American super-hero comics. From the chapter titles having artwork that emulates the covers of American comic books, and the general style and tone being more in line with American super-hero comics than *shonen* manga, the book is one big shout-out to the American genre.The story takes place in the future where increasing numbers of the populace have developed abilities called "quirks". These abilities help the people who have them to do amazing feats, or sometimes just mundane things that aren't super-useful. They are basically like the mutants in Marvel Comics or meta-humans in DC Comics.Because of this, some people decided to use their new abilities to hurt others and enrich themselves in selfish, illegal, immoral ways. These new super-powered villains are sometimes really difficult, if not impossible, to stop. For ordinary folks or even those with less impressive quirks, at least. For those with powerful enough quirks, such villains can be fought successfully.Such powerfully-endowed folks are able to become professional heroes who are paid by governments world-wide for their services, and some can get fame and fortune by doing so. And this brings us to our story.There is a boy in Japan named Izuku Midoriya who desperately wants to become a hero. To do so, he must attend a "hero school" and he wants to go to the premiered Hero school in his country, the U.A. High School. Unfortunately, he is a quirkless - one of the few people left who has no quirk at all, not even a mundane one.Of course, between the lack of a quirk, the bullying of the only boy in their school to have a powerful quirk, and the mockery of everyone else over his dreams, Midoriya is miserable. When he is saved from attack by his personal hero - and the strongest hero on the planet - All-Might, his fortunes turn around. All-Might is so impressed with his heart that he helps Midoriya fulfill his dreams.So begins the story of this young boy's rise from the victim of bullying and useless dreams, to beginning a journey to friends and becoming the world's greatest hero.This story was really sweet and is, like *Tiger & Bunny* a really unique tale. There are some subversions of typical Japanese genres that seem to uphold American ideas of individualism over Japanese cultural community. It's not subversive, but it does hit points that aren't often hit in Japanese series. Not that the Japanese never value individuality. Japan is a varied country of different viewpoints underneath the cultural conformity. Also, some ideas are everywhere, across cultural lines, just with differing emphases and so forth. But the tone is more American melded with Japanese. It's really quite interesting.I love Japanese culture, though there is bad just as in American culture. It's cool to see shout-outs and other stuff to American genres from a Japanese fan of such. It's as if the opposite of me in Japan wrote a series and such.The characters are also a unique mix of Japanese and American types. And in the notes on some characters, you can see where the mangaka stated he decided to go against some style that his editors asked for. These characters are the ones that have a more American feel to them. There are other characters that are explicitly Japanese styles of characters too.*My Hero Academia* has a fun story wherein the author uses some really unique mixes of Japanese and American tropes and styles. It's one of my favorite series in manga or otherwise, and one that I highly recommend.

i can talk so much of how great this manga but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. I'll limit my comments to the first volume. In the beginning I thought, "just your average protagonist that has no power and will need training." Well that is the case but slowly you start to like him and cheer him on. His reasons may seem standard but he stands out from all the airheads and hotheads in shounen mangas. Another reason My Hero Academia stands out is the setting. Superpowers... Yes but the combination of traditional shounen manga with a DC/Marvel comics feel to it just works so well!! Stop reading this and click purchase!
