I'm a self-help junkie. I was raised by a single dysfunctional mother. I realize now- 38 yrs. later how I was raised has impacted me socially. I only thought I was useful if I was doing something for somebody else, and in the process, I lost my sense of self. I would have bought any addition of this book really, I just happened on this edition. I think the "dummie" series is effective on any subject that is difficult to grasp. Concepts of myself that need to change are difficult for me to see, but this book makes it easier. As other reviewers have said, change isn't overnight, but with education comes an opportunity for change. I used this book in conjuntion with other lectures on Youtube: Ross Rosenberg, and Oprah's life class when she talks about balancing her success and boundaries to help others. Also, I have participated in Zen meditation which helps me see how mindfulness can help set the stage for seeing my errors objectively so that I can correct them and let them go. I think for just about anyone (myself included), the learning process is a combination of things. I'm gald I got this book. I'm better off for having read it!
This book was the shove I needed to finally figure out what was wrong in my life. Darlene does not sugar coat her message, and at times it was difficult to read the examples and explanations that cut so deeply to the heart of what I was experiencing. But if you can be brave (you can!) and honest with yourself, then this book delivers the love medicine that enables the reader to set out on a better, more helpful and more skill path to reclaim their life. By learning about my symptoms of codependency, I learned how to change my behavior. I was able to put those changes into practice chapter by chapter, with the result that as I changed my behavior, my spouse's behavior changed for the better too! Darlene's explanations and guidance can be applied immediately to daily living, with transformations quickly following. The subject matter can be "shine-a-spotlight" tough to face, but the actual reading is clear, and flows easily. I felt like I was healing and growing stronger with every page read. There are other Codependency books out there, but my experience is that this one is the most comprehensive while also being the easiest to immediately put into practice.
Very clear and straight forward. This shows the complexity of this issue and the various levels that a person can experience. Compared to other books I have read on codependency, this one leaves the reader with a positive attitude towards improving his or her situation instead of virtually condeming one to a lousy, unhappy and relatively short life like other books do.The author is very clear about where codependency and its effects can lead but also points out how a person can deal with it in positive ways that get results. This was a weight lifted off my shoulders.
I highly recommend Codependency for Dummies.I have complex PTSD. Over a period of years, I have read many books, articles and taken classes regarding the various subjects that affect psychological/emotional healing, trauma, self-development, addiction, psychoanalysis, etc.I can’t say enough about this book. It is very comprehensive and extremely resourceful. I am thankful for how Darlene Lancer references and relates topics throughout the book making it easy to cross reference valuable information and the process for identifying, learning, healing, growing, developing and becoming the healthful person we hope to be.I am so thankful; with the help of Codependency for Dummies and consistently applying the information therein I do not have to live my life as a slave to a way of thinking and feeling that prohibits me from experiencing my healthiest self, capable and confidently living life to the fullest.This book hugs my brain and heart with empowering messages and exercises that assist my process for how I may love and respect myself and as a result, righteously and healthfully love and respect the world around me.
This book significantly changed my life. I needed it at a time where I was struggling with depression and multiple dysfunctional relationships and it was a perfect tool to help me face my codependency issues. I took a solid year and went to celebrate recovery, met with a counselor one on one, and literally wrote out quotes from this book by hand.I honestly think everyone should read this book. Even if you don't think the issues are with you, you might be surprised. There is SO MUCH freedom on the other side, and Dr. Lancer's well-researched knowledge will help you get there. This may be one of the biggest and best investments you ever make in your life. It certainly was in mine.
I never wanted to buy a book where I called myself a Dummy but this book is the 2nd one I read on Codependency. I have read, studied and reviewed much of the information in this book. I am trying to become aware of my actions and thoughts that contribute to dysfunctional relationships. I am working on changing a lifetime of bad habits. I know I am much happier now. I am setting boundaries. I am being direct. I am watching my language and much more. My self esteem has increased. I feel good about myself. Yes, it is hard work but worth it. Thank you Darlene for a wonderful tool, your book, that will help me live a happier life. Sandy
