extremely useful to understand the US food culture. full of relevant details, though sometimes a bit long. the update should be a bit more complete to take into account the evolution of the last 20 years

The author's take on this book was too Marxist for my taste. To paint the food industry as inherently bad and the counterculture as inherently good precludes an objective study of the food business.

gift for a person who is into cooking and does hearth side cooking at a historical house and loves to read about different cookingideas

After I finished this book I finally understood the word told to Benjamin Braddock from The Graduate: "Plastics." I assumed the speaker was referring to some staid corporate job, but what I learned from this book is that the word "plastic" to the counterculture ear meant the inauthentic. Around the middle of twentieth century Americans were introduced to a whole different diet of foods. Its what we would call today processed foods but in the counterculture lexicon was dubbed plastic foods, e.g. Cheerios. The organic movement was suppose to be the antithesis of this industrial created food-like substance (to borrow a phrase from Michael Pollan's IN DEFENSE OF FOOD). It was grown on small farms and didn't use chemicals. It was suppose to be eaten in whole food form not processed, dessicated bits. The book is an eye opener on the origins of the organic movement, the consumer activism it spawned, and how corporations and their well-endowed marketing arms tried to steer consumers back to their products by mimicing organic foods, e.g. granola bars that are closer to candy than real granola. I highly recommend it.

Mullen has written a powerful treatise arguing that America is no longer a democracy but a government that is controlled by a small elitist group. Wall Street, the Federal Reserve, politicians, lobbyists and educational leaders care nothing about the masses of working people or their welfare. According to Mullen, government policies are determined and orchestrated to benefit the elites. The author presents the history of the Federal Banking System, how Wall Street manipulated and gained control of Big Business, the process by which Congress and institutes of higher learning took control of the educational system, and how foreign policy got transferred into the hands of small, secret groups like the Council of Foreign Relations. He traces foreign policy decisions from the Truman Doctrine, the Cold War, the Vietnam conflict, Irag, and the growth of Al Qaeda.Mullen backs his theories with evidence, but more importantly, at the end of each chapter, he presents a list of steps that he believes could be taken to restore power to the people. The book is packed with information, but the reader does not feel she is reading a textbook. The author is persuasive and convincing, but whether the reader accepts or rejects his arguments, the book is a thought-provoking commentary on the situation in the United States today.

Informative and concise , we hear in news and media about top 1 percent controls America it’s actullay top 0.1 percent .Highly recommended

This is a very informative and well-documented treatise on the power behind the United States of America. I would have liked to see more description and explanation on how and why the RINOS always look like the bad guys and why there are no democrats in this 'inner society.' that seeks to destroy our country. In addition, there needs to be more objectivity in regards to communism. The author does not look at the evils of communism; instead, the focus is on how the top echelons of society manipulated things to destroy communism in order to maintain their influence in the U.S. and also throughout the world. In the same vein, the Islamic issue seems to be glossed over in favor of blaming everything on the top 1% of this country and parts of Europe. I do not doubt the findings and I know this book is quite an eye opener on what really goes on in this country and consequently around the world. I would therefore like to read further and deeper about this topic.I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reading Deals in exchange for my honest review.

I must confess that it took me seemingly forever to read through the first couple of chapters, they are not an easy read. That being said, once I began to read the 'stories', it captured my attention until the last page. The author weaves a compelling story hidden within other stories, that either opens our eyes to that which has been hidden by the powers that be, which can make one respond with outrage, or causes us to declare it the work of a lunatic, and dismiss it as duch. I have mentioned this author and book to those who, like myself, refuse to believe that this is the way it is, and there's no way out.

This book becomes political and judgmental. Then the author judge a act wrong he does try to discover why it was done.

Interesting read, however everybody in their right minds knows that my wife runs the entire world.

Poetry is a hard one for me to review because I really haven’t reviewed a whole lot of it, and it’s also something highly subjective. So keep that in mind when moving forward, what works for me may not work for you and vice versa.I quite like the collection presented here. It speaks of the poet’s experiences with love, trama, self-discovery, healing and mental illness. The book does contain subjects that can be difficult to read about, but she included a list of trigger warnings in the beginning just in case anyone needs that heads up.Some of the poems really spoke to me and even though a few of them were only a line or two long I found myself re-reading them a few times, especially those that spoke about depression and the way people view you vs. the way you view yourself. The imagery she uses in her poems is beautiful even in those that cut deeper and leave you raw. I find that reading other people’s experiences with the same things I deal with help me process my own issues, sometimes in different ways than I would have done on my own. It’s an interesting healing process that sort of opens myself up to other options. As a part of the LGBTQA community, I also value the experiences she shared with her own sexual and gender identities and I think she did a wonderful job of really capturing the emotions of self-discovery from fear to acceptance.Louve -ch is definitely one to look out for in the poetry world, and I thank her for sharing something so personal and providing what could be inspiration and healing to others going through similar experiences.

the author shows such vulnerability with her experiences including rape, ptsd, depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBT issues and advice. she never appears as a victim, her words are powerful, guiding us all to heal. she is a influencer of good. she shows us that no matter how dark life gets, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I read a poem from the book at least once a day and it helps me survive my own mental health. as an lgbt author she does an excellent job bringing many issues together including that with gender identity, sexual identity, love, heartbreak as well as the struggles to be a woman in todays society, eschpeially a gender fluid lesbian/pansexual/demisexual. her journey is inspiring. a must read for poetry.

She saved me, before I even I purchased this book, she already grabbed me and pulled me out. You feel the pain, and the love written amongst the pages. Yet even with darkness surrounding the words a light shows cleverly hidden between the letters. I’ve never been so moved in my life, or been shown who I truly am inside until I found her. I told her my story, and how she played a part in it, and I want to repay her with this review. Buy it, read it, borrow it from someone and save a life. Save your own. I promise you’re not alone and the poems inside will nourish your heart and soul. I promise.

Seriously the best ever! I feel, see, taste every word she writes. Her words paint a picture such as no one before has been able to do. She reaches deep into my souls and touches my very core. Everyone of her poems is explosive with instensity. I am amazed, that it’s even a possibility to express such deep rooted and raw emotions. I Love, Love, Love her poems and I am telling everyone I know to read her poems. It’s a book to keep near by and read over and over-to savor each word!!! What an inspiration and healing too... so needed by human kind especially today..........

This book was intentionally a gift for my niece who had a terrible secret which she is now just seeking help for. In no way shape or form should this book be considered a self help book. The author in my mind has stepped off the cliff and is wallowing away in her/his own pity party. A sophomoric, I give up manual for people that are suicidal or are thinging about ending it all.

I’ve been reading a lot of poetry book lately about relationships and self worth. But The wolf & Her moon was a book I needed before I knew I needed it. It was so much more. I felt understood and validated from her writing about child abandonment to mental illnesses and self harm. To loving again. I could read it 1000000 times. Always find a new page to connect with.

I love this book and all it’s contents, i Never thought I would like poetry but after picking this book up I was blown away at how these words she arranged in such a way would make me feel. This book has all the feels. I would highly recommend.

This book is everything and such an amazing gift to me and anyone who finds a space for it in their heart. Her words have moved me and struck my heart in ways poetry has never done before. For anyone who’s ever felt alone or in need of something to awaken and kindle their inner fire, this book has that power. Thank you so much for this. <3

One of the very few books describing the history of the life on the Mississippi River from the first arrival of the white settlers to the modern days. The author shows realistic depiction of the life and culture along and on the River. The idea going through this book is how little value a life had there and how cruel the times were all the way up until the beginning of the 20th century.

A view of the Mississippi River that one is not used to seeing. The Mississippi was not always the romantic place as envisioned by Jerome Kerns and Oxcart Hammerstein in :"Show Boat", or the nostalgic tale of Mark Twain in "Tom Sawyer." My own nostalgic memories of the River are from my days as a student at Washington University in St. Louis (pre Gateway Arch) and gathering samples of Mississippi River water at New Madrid to test for possible pollution introduced from a power plant built on the shores of the River. (There was no detectable effect on water quality due to the nearly infinite dilution by the River.)Today when one observes the Mississippi, he sees the long barges hauling agricultural an the goods for export at New Orleans.the wild river has been tamed to allow it to become a major means of transportation. The romantic days of the River are confined to "Show Boats" and other paddle-wheelers as tourist attractions. The U.S. Army of Corps of Engineers seems to have a constant battle to keep the river open for traffic in fighting the tendency of the River to want to change course. If one looks at modern mopes of the United States it is observed that parts of Illinois are on the west bank of the Mississippi. One has to wonder if taming the river is really feasible or only a pipe dream. An easy and informative read.

A vivid history of the Mississippi River culture of the early 19th century, including the people living there, the river itself as a deadly and ever-changing force, and the way it was presented to outsiders through the early VR-like technology of "panoramas" and the work of Mark Twain. A favorite part for me was the discussion of just how forbidding an environment the river was in the early years, with an entire slang vocabulary that sprang up to describe its hazards (including "sawyers") and entire towns that were established specifically to keep thieving, drunken river-dwellers out of the respectable people's districts just inland.I read this in the context of Stark's "Astoria", a history of an ill-fated expedition to colonize what's now Oregon, with some overlapping information about early Canadian "voyageur" culture.

I thought this would be a fascinating book, but unfortunately to me the book was very dry and wandered from subject to subject. Even though this was a great subject that should have kept me turning the pages I had a hard time staying interested. The author did a great job researching this subject, I just wish it had been written in a more interesting manner.

If you are interested in how the Mississippi changed America, this is the book for you. Short and concise, yet with a ton of information, you will not be sorry. While it did drag a bit at the end, I learned a lot about how the Mississippi literally contributed to the development of towns, economies and the Civil War. If you want a history book that you will really enjoy reading, pick this one up.

I grew up with the Mississippi River levee literally in our back yard. The river has always been a place of wonder, mystery and unbelievable power. I've read many books about the river and this is one of the best. I just wish it had been a little longer. I finished it so quickly it left me eager for more of the same.

I don't read non-fiction often but wanted to know more about the Mississippi in the early 1800's and this book filled in that time period for me. The overwelming prejudice against abolition was enlightening. The river rats and their loud and dangerous lifestyle was also facinating. So many charactors in western movies and historical novels come from this era, the well dressed gambler, the roughneck flatboat operator, the fancy pants southern aristocrat. It only lasted what, 50 years? Yet it is forever a part of the development of our country.

An extraordinary compendium of amazing stories of events along the old Big Muddy. Fascinating and relentlessly entertaining. If you live near the river as I do you will find the stories a window into history as it was before civilization tamed the river.

Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War

From Booklist

After years working for both the CIA and the National Security Council, Gates was president of Texas A & M when he was asked by President George W. Bush to replace Donald Rumsfeld as secretary of defense in 2006. He accepted, and he served in both the Bush and Obama administrations until 2011. He has written a revealing but sometimes frustrating recounting of his experiences as he attempted to manage the Pentagon and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gates offers absorbing and often surprising accounts of the formation of new and sometimes successful policies to alter the course of the wars. He also describes the internal wars within each administration and his struggles to ram change through the Pentagon bureaucracy. Unfortunately, Gates shows little introspection, or questioning regarding the basic geopolitical strategy that got the U.S. into these wars. Furthermore, given his decades in Washington, Gates’ pose as an outsider banging his head against entrenched political and bureaucratic interests isn’t credible, especially since Gates was regarded as a savvy infighter during his earlier experience in Washington. Still, this is a useful and informative, if self-serving, memoir covering critical years in recent history. --Jay Freeman

Review

A 2014 New York Times Notable Book“Probably one of the best Washington memoirs ever...Historians and policy wonks will bask in the revelations Gates provides on major decisions from late 2006 to 2011, the span of his time at the Pentagon…Gates is doing far more than just scoring points in this revealing volume. The key to reading it is understanding that he was profoundly affected by his role in sending American soldiers overseas to fight and be killed or maimed.” —Thomas E. Ricks, The New York Times Book Review   “Touching, heartfelt...fascinating...Gates takes the reader inside the war-room deliberations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and delivers unsentimental assessments of each man’s temperament, intellect and management style...No civilian in Washington was closer to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than Gates. As Washington and the rest of the country were growing bored with the grinding conflicts, he seemed to feel their burden more acutely.” —Greg Jaffe, The Washington Post   “Forthright, impassioned…highly revealing about decision making in both the Obama and Bush White Houses…[Gates’] writing is informed not only by a keen sense of historical context, but also by a longtime Washington veteran’s understanding of how the levers of government work or fail to work. Unlike many careful Washington memoirists, Gates speaks his mind on a host of issues…[he] gives us his shrewd take on a range of foreign policy matters, an understanding of his mission to reform the incoherent spending and procurement policies of the Pentagon, and a tactile sense of what it was like to be defense secretary during two wars.”  —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times  “A refreshingly honest memoir and a moving one.”—Jack Keane, The Wall Street Journal“A compelling memoir and a serious history…A fascinating, briskly honest account [of a] journey through the cutthroat corridors of Washington and world politics, with shrewd, sometimes eye-popping observations along the way about the nature of war and the limits of power.…Gates was a truly historic secretary of defense…precisely because he did get so much done…His descriptions of how he accomplished these feats—the mix of cooptation and coercion that he employed—should be read by every future defense secretary, and executives of all stripes, as a guide for how to command and overhaul a large institution.”—Fred Kaplan, Slate  “A breathtakingly comprehensive and ultimately unsparing examination of the modern ways of making politics, policy, and war…Students of the nation’s two early twenty-first century wars will find the comprehensive account of Pentagon and White House deliberations riveting. General readers will be drawn to [Gates’] meditations on power and on life at the center of great political decisions…His vision is clear and his tale is sad. Gates takes ‘Duty’ as his title, but the account of his service also brings to mind the other two thirds of the West Point motto: ‘honor’ and ‘country.’”—David M. Shribman, The Boston Globe “Duty…is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of what makes Washington tick.” —Edward Luce, Financial Times  “Gates has offered…an informed and…earnest perspective, one that Americans ought to hear, reflect on and debate.” —Conor Friedersdorf, The Atlantic“Engaging and candid….Young people who want to understand and live up to the highest ideals of American statesmanship would do well to read this book carefully; Gates has much to teach about the practical idealism that represents the best kind of American leadership.”—Foreign Affairs “Compelling…trenchant.” —Newsday“This is a serious, thoughtful, illuminating, and valuable insider account of the final years of the George W. Bush administration and early years of the Obama presidency….Gates holds little back in this revealing memoir.” —Choice “If you read only one book by a Washington insider this year, make it this one. It should be savored by anyone who wishes to know more about the realities of decision-making in today’s federal government.” —Library Journal“The full story that emerges from this detailed and often deeply personal account is of a man fed up with the dysfunction of the nation’s capital.” —The American Conservative

As someone who has been associated with the US government (as active duty, a DoD civilian, and as a contractor) for 26 years now, I found this book to be incredibly insightful. I might well read it again. It usually takes me months to read a book this size; I finished this one in just over a week. One aspect that I enjoyed is that while Gates made numerous references to his past, he did not go on and on and on about it. When I read a book like this I do not care about how the author's grandparent's made their way to America. I do not care about where or under what conditions the author grew up. For a book like this I want to be hit in the face immediately with the here-and-now, and that's what Gates did. I think of the entire 600 pages he spent just over TWO pages on this childhood. Some authors spend entire chapters (or multiple chapters) about their years as a child and/or teenager. Some readers like that, and that's fine. For me, I don't care. If I am reading a SECDEF's memoirs I want them to begin at the moment he gets the call from the President and end with the day he resigns. This book is perfect in that regard. The amount of detail is amazing. Gates take you into the Situation Room with him, into the Oval Office, into the countless meetings and gives what I believe to be a balanced assessment of every personality that was in-play during his tenure (from field commanders to POTUS). Just as important, his love for the troops and their well-being is beyond question. Well done, Bob!

Bob Gates provides an excellent look at the politics and personal stresses of being Secretary of Defense. Fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were certainly a priority. That said, he also spent considerable time on Iran, China, Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell, budget cuts, White House micromanagement, and Congressional parochialism.Mr. Gates’ focus on troop welfare seemed to be at odds with numerous bureaucrats. A good example was his insistence on quickly deploying Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. He struggled against a bureaucracy that was more focused on developing new weapons for the next war, rather than saving troops in the current war.Since the author worked for both Bush and Obama, he is able to provide a unique assessment of each president. Whereas President Bush was focused on winning the wars, President Obama was focused on getting out. One surprising observation was that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was a major supporter of the military; something for which she is not normally given credit. Both she and the author were frequently allied against an inexperienced White House security council.Overall, this is a great book. It is easy to read and paints a deeply personal picture of Mr. Gates. In many ways, it’s an insightful look at how the self-serving interests of Congress can affect how we fight wars. The book is long, at almost 600 pages and contains numerous color photos. Most readers should find this book interesting.

I tend to think of memoirs as little more than a platform for public figures to try to glorify themselves or frame their legacies to ensure against the inevitable -- that everyone will forget that you ever existed (applies to most people besides presidents). In "Duty," on the other hand, Robert Gates gives us a pretty solid and fair account of his time in office as Secretary of Defense. He scores several points above the self-seekers out there. That's not to say that Gates is just trying to get the facts out there; he's got his point of view and he's pushing it at us. The difference, in my view, is that Gates is doing it fairly. He's not above calling BS when he thinks he sees it -- he's especially hard on Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Dick Cheney, and virtually the entire White House staff of Obama. But he's not just taking pot shots. He frames his disagreements as just what they were: policy disagreements, and he's gracious in noting that the people behind the disagreements are solid, smart, good people with whom he got along very well on a personal level. That simple acknowledgement -- that those with whom we may disagree are, at the bottom of it all, pretty decent people -- is all to rare among public figures, and Gates gets my kudos for basing his memoirs on that foundational idea. He thinks pretty little of preening, parochial congresspeople and the way they place personal political gain above the good of the country, but regardless of policy differences he makes sure to note the good people he served with who genuinely had a different view of what's good for America, and Gates makes sure we know he appreciated that in his colleagues. My biggest gripe with "Duty" is simply that I think Gates abhorred so much that politics could be an element of policymaking that he failed to acknowledge that -- as much as he doesn't like it -- it's a fact of governing. He tended in his memoir to be pretty harsh with those who kept politics on the president's radar, and I found that a little unfair. Presidents have to play politics. It shouldn't govern all, that's true, but by even Gates' own account, neither Bush nor Obama gave abeyance solely to politics. As such, I feel like Gates should have allowed more latitude to political advisers to do their jobs without griping about them all the time.
