With as much anticipation as a 12 year outside Barnes and Noble waiting for the midnight release of Harry Potter #7, I pre-ordered Meehan’s Bartender Manual so it would arrive freshly on my doorstep publication day; 8 hours later, and 260 pages into his manual, I already know this book will be as influential as many of the defining cocktail books of our era that built my mixology hobby - death & co, liquid intelligence, potions of the Caribbean. Although I can yet to comment on the second half (yes I’m reading it front to back) I can recommend with utmost confidence you should buy Meehan’s new manual if you want to be on the forefront of our cocktail revolution; he has taken his decades of experience and vast weath of knowledge and placed it at your fingertips with insights and wisdom stated clearly, efficiently, and beautifully. I’ll give some examples:-Cocktail History: Meehan condenses many worldwide threads of cocktails history (tiki, prohibition, punch, the dark ages aka 60s/70s, our newest revolution) and places them in a logical timeline that clearly makes sense in simple language. I have read many cocktail books explaining these eras separately, but for the first time Mehaan connects and integrates the whole story clearly, showing how our history molded the cocktail renessance we are in today.-Commercial Bar Design: he examines every detail down to the minimum dimension of a bar stool chair cushion, to optimized well bottle organization, to lighting, floor plans, neighborhood selection, all with insights gleaming through from his many years building PDT and other world renown bars.-Home Bar Design: this is the first book I have seen touch on Home bars, where many readers like myself spend the majority of our time crafting drinks.-Tools and Techniques: while many other books have belabored these subjects to death, Meehan added fresh insight to these already well written about topics. It is written at the level both an expert and a novice can draw significant knowledge from.-Production: Meehan takes liquor from the farm to distillation to bottling to table, unmasking a fascinating world only seen by the leaders in the field.And of course as with every book, there is the ‘Spirits and Cocktails’ section. It’s divided by liquor class, each with a beautiful introduction on the birthplace, origin, history, and shaping of that class. Meehan focuses on only 100 cocktails (classics/vintage + some of his creations), allowing more depth by going through the “origin, logic, and hacks” for each drink. I love this organization. It’s a nice variation from so many prior cocktail books.And past page 260 (I’m currently in his rum based section), I’ll leave to you so I don’t spoil it all. Enjoy as you dive into this great new book that will join in history as a defining book of our cocktail revolution.p.s.+It’s bound in a beautiful green thick hardback cover that has both the beauty of a coffee table book to the durability of a barback book+It has beautiful Pictures, Bar Layout Designs, Maps, and imagery making it pleasing to flip through.

I am extremely impressed by the entirety of this cocktail book. It has a heavy focus on the logistical and technical aspects of not just making drinks, but opening, setting up, and operating a bar efficiently. The included architectural plans of successful bars and the explanation and analysis of their use of design and space is something you don't see in almost any other cocktail book. The section on drink making technique is handled in an almost tactical narrative. It using the fictional placement of a very large order of 11 or so cocktails requiring every method of drink creation to explain how a bar with two bartenders would most efficiently split the work and create the ensuing drinks so that everything was finished at around the same time while maintaining the quality of every single drink.The photography is stunning, the layout is very intuitive, and the physical binding and quality of printing are all top notch. Each recipe comes with a photograph, the history of the drink, and recommendations on quality of spirits/ingredients to use.I will say, that if you're just looking for a straight recipe book or an introductory cocktail book to get your feet wet, this may be a bit intense. It really is aimed more towards folks who are already, or are interested in becoming, involved in the cocktail/hospitality industry, or cocktail enthusiasts who are in pretty deep. This is not a generalist manual as it goes into very detailed specifics and theory as well as philosophy of being in the service industry.This is not a criticism at all and I think that this is one of Meehan's Bartender Manual's greatest strengths which makes it stand out from the crowd, but that said just be aware if that doesn't sound like something you're into. I'd absolutely recommend this book and am very pleased with this purchase. I already had high expectations when I pre-ordered this since PDT's cocktail book (also by Jim Meehan) was amazing, but this is a book with a different purpose that I think elevates even past it.

Great reference and history of spirits. There are some great recipes in here that go to often. Many of the recipes call for boutique spirits that can be very hard to acquire. I wish substitutions are more clearly spelled out, but to be clear, there are attempts to 'hack' some recipes in cases where some recipes are hard to find. It's a great book and very interesting, but not quite what I was expecting for home mixing. The few recipes I pulled out of it are great--I was just expecting a book/reference with many recipes that I can use.The take away for me would be: if you're looking for a book with a bunch of recipes for home mixing, this may not be the best one for you. The first recipe doesn't show up until hundreds f of pages into the book. However, If you're looking to be highly educated in spirits with a few bullet-proof recipes, you should consider this book. I recommend the Negroni, Boulevardier, Rob Roy, Vesper, Old Friend, and 21st Century.

I liked that this novel touched on some serious subjects that need to be heard, yet it was still a good and quick read. Forman's voice is strong, simple, and forward, and I liked the way she developed each character. The story really highlights what Cody goes through, as well as other characters, instead of focusing its attention wholly on Meg; this was a big factor in my positive review because if you take your own life, you don't get to tell your story. Cody's character even comments on this fact. With stories about this subject matter (or even TV shows), I feel that there is always so much focus on the character who took his/her own life, when there should really be focus, just as much if not more, on the characters whose lives are negatively affected by someone else's decision -- the guilt, the bitterness, the discomfort, the disappointment, the regret -- all the feelings that are conjured up with one person's irreversible action. While a lot of this story is bittersweet and heart-wrenching, it is accurate and feels very real, unlike other YA fiction that focuses a decision or tragedy like this around guilt tripping others and adding dramatic effects to get more viewers and readers.There is something for everyone in "I Was Here". It's full of mystery, tragedy, drama, romance, and even a little comedic relief here and there. I cannot express how much I enjoyed reading this -- I think it only took me about three or four days to breeze through it because I loved it so much. Forman is a fantastic author, and the way she developed this story to highlight and pay homage to a real-life occurrence of the same situation was truly touching, inspiring, and even heartbreaking. Although it's labeled as YA fiction, I think it's for all readers. I enjoyed reading this YA fiction as an adult; I picked this one up to soften my distaste for novels in this category after seeing "13 Reasons Why" come on the scene and feeling like there had to be a more realistic portrayal of the questions we all have surrounding suicide and mental illness. THIS BOOK is the one people should be reading if they want a closer look. Maybe not solely this book, but this one is a good start, and it helps start the conversation that needs to be had in our society about what we can do for those with mental illness, and sometimes, maybe even what we cannot do, or what we feel we could have done, or what we will always wonder, day after day... THAT is the impact that this type of tragedy has, as this novel depicts. Beautiful story - I definitely recommend it.

Cody thought it must be their very separate lives, or it could have been something they had argued about.Before Cody has figured it out, though, she is shocked by the discovery that Meg has killed herself. And she had scheduled the release of her suicide notes, making it clear that everything was planned out to the last detail.Joe and Sue Garcia, Meg’s parents, are devastated, and when Cody offers to go to Tacoma to pick up Meg’s things, they seem relieved.I Was Here was a journey, one taken by a grieving young woman who cannot believe that her best friend would willingly leave this life. A journey that will provide unexpected answers, and not the ones Cody was hoping to find.We are offered a peek into the life Meg lived with her housemates, none of whom really knew her. We see how Cody comes to realize that, despite what she has hoped to prove by her investigation of the Final Solutions website and the people there who seem to “mentor” young people into how to kill themselves, what she discovers instead is a way to make peace with who Meg was…and who she was, too. Not a mystery, really, but a winding exploration of the meaning of friendship and connections. A book I could not put down. 5 stars.

This is definitely a book you have to go into understanding the subject matter. The heroine isn't unlikable, she is a realistic representation of someone who lost the center of their world and support system to an unexpected tragedy.That's a very painful difficult experience when you have no one else to trust or confide in. Building relationships takes trust and time. People around her have not behaved in a way to build trust and being suddenly alone doesn't change that. You don't just leap into am intimate friendship because the last one you had is gone there is no replacement waiting in the wings.All that said i did enjoy this book. Its a good journey story about evaluating your perceptions and first impressions. Muddling through a tragedy as best you can when you have no one to turn to. I do have an appreciation for darker subject matter so it may not suit tastes of the majority but i feel it has important lessons.

Let me first say that I am an avid fan of Ms. Forman. I have used her novels If I Stay and Where She Went in my eighth grade class and the students adore her descriptive writing and ability to pull you into the story and characters.That being said, I was a bit disappointed in this book. The main character, Cody, was very well described and the story had substance. I also was impressed with the way Ms. Forman tackled the subject of suicide. However, I am disappointed because most of the story dragged. It told the story of Cody but didn't give much insight into the true Meg. I wouldn't use this story with my class, not because of a rough story, but trying to analyze and evaluate a mediocre storyline and plot. Also, I would caution teachers against using this in class because it may give students ideas.It is an okay read. I will continue reading books by Ms. Forman. This just didn't really cut it for me.

Good read and worth the research.

This is a scholarly work by an author of immense erudition who never reveals his own beliefs but gives an elaborate and clear account of the religion known as Judaism as it developed during its normative period.The index of passages cited in the work is enough alone to humble all but the most profound of scholars of the Hebrew and Aramaic and classical sources.Anyone seriously interested in Judaism as a religion should read this book.Many years ago the late Professor Leon Roth (a former Rector of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem) said to me that he regarded the book as the best book in the English language on Judaism and possibly the best book in any language on Judaism. Having read it I agreed with him and in the intervening years I have never encountered anything to change my view.Highly recommended.

The stories use colloquial language so that you're getting exposure to the way people speak in situations that they actually live.Highly recommended. I have the print copy of his German short story book, so imagine this one looks just as cool as a paperback.

I use Olly's Short Stories in English to tutor students in English as a Second Language. His method of learning a foreign language by reading for pleasure on your level is brilliant and it works. If you follow the advice on how to how best to read this book as explained in the introduction, you WILL improve. After my students read to themselves first, they then read to me and we review the vocabulary words at the end of the chapter together, in addition, to correctly pronouncing any words they needed help with. Then, they read the chapter again with an even better understanding and they love it. They hear they're own progress and I remind them to listen out for similar conversational phrases that they've read in the book, in real life conversations around them. I also use Olly's Short Stories in Italian for myself and purchased the Spanish and French versions as I've become totally motivated to enhance my linguistic abilities overall. This book is absolutely terrific!

Simply, the amount of information that Dr. Scott has collected and uncovered on the Roswell Incident, the evolution of Wright Field to Wright-Patterson (and its connections to the Roswell Incident), the evolution of Project Blue Book and Special Report -14, etc. all lead to a compelling and highly detailed chronology of Government and Private Business connections to the UFO Phenomenon."Sacred Corridors" also gives the reader a unique and detailed insight into one of the fields most treasured possessions... Dr. Allen Hynek and his association with Project Blue Book and the eventual creation of CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies) by Dr. Hynek in 1973. There may not have seemed to be much going on after the Roswell UFO crash was dismissed as a “Weather Balloon” but the authoress reveals that that was far from the actual fact. The corridors of power were buzzing like an overturned bee hive.Much like a swan it may have seemed serene on the surface, but hidden from view it was a great turmoil of denials cover ups and obfuscation. The CIA and US Airforce went to extreme lengths to try and remove the events from the public eye.Irena M Scott PhD is a scientist who was not only involved in many of the outcomings of the Roswell UFO crash, but knew or met many of the people who were involved in the aftermath. In particular Dr J Allen Hynek whom she investigates thoroughly. She has published much on the subject and is well known for her thoroughness and accuracy.She also discusses Nitinol, the “Memory Metal” that was apparently found at the Roswell UFO crash site and some of the alloys that have been developed from it since.This book will open your eyes to those events surrounding the Roswell event. It is a book that everyone who studies UFO events must read. It is an easy read, well written and does not presume that you need to be a scientist to understand it.She has visited Wright-Patterson Air Force Base several times and has taken pictures of the various well known buildings there. Many of them part of the Roswell folklore. These photographs are reproduced in the book and she uses them to help dispell many of the myths that have sprung up around them and even under them!She lifts the lid on many of the cover-ups that surrounded the crash and its aftermath and dispassionately disects much of the false history that has attached itself to the event.Her inside information about the aftermath is rivetting and comprehensive. A very good read and a book that all UFO enthusiasts need to read and one that will be read time and time again a reference to events that need to be dragged into the light of day and out of the hands of those who want to cover it all up and keep the public in the dark.I kept thinking as I read it, how has she escaped the attentions of the CIA for so long?Well done Irena!Reviewed by George Bishop.

This book gives a preview of colonial Grenada . It sets forth the appetite for greed by its colonial owner and later penchant for power by its neo-colonial master.It also sets forth a path of self reflection in a positive, selfless and humbled way - one that breaks the core that not even the revolution could have altered to the point of frankness, openness and reconciliation.A must read for young aspiring politicians.

When I heard about this book on the SpiceIslander TalkShop forum, I purchased it and read through it in one night. While I don't agree with some of Layne's conclusions (like whether or not the US intervention was necessary), I found it a fascinating read and I learned a few things I didn't know before about the 1979 Grenada Revolution.

I honestly everyone in Grenada and Grenadians abroad to read this book. Especially our youths!!

Joseph Ewart Layne, thoughts and reflections about the making of the Grenadian Revolution is very timely; although coming 30 years from the time of the actual event. It is great having someone from the inside giving his perspective on what happen. I was a student at the university of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica at the time, and was profoundly impacted by the events in Grenada. Joseph Laynes insights provides a great context for understanding and appreciating the history of the first revolution in the English speaking caribbean.Kamau Williams

This story on the making of the revolution is authentic and comprenhensive, and this book have sealed an ephisode in Grenada's history.

Good reading

Of local interest only but fills a historical gap.

Visited Grenada and wanted a book more about the US involvement in this revolution. This book was about the build up to revolutionand take over but did not go into why the US came in or why to revolutionist were turned on and sent to prison. I still don't have a clear picture of what happened and why.
