Husband and wife team Harry and Zanna Goldhawk met at university while studying illustration. After many late nights in the studio they discovered a shared love of nature and color that sparked many collaborative projects. I bought this book for myself, excited about the whimsy of the artwork. While I have been able to create a few fun sketches using the book, it's been frustrating to use.I'd like more detail on which plants are which so I can compare the stylized version to a different reference.I'd also like a watercolor and computer set of instructions for each project. The book says near the beginning that it contains some of both, but it takes extra brain power for me to suss out which tools were used to make which demos.As art books go, this is in the, "Step one, draw a circle, Step two, complete your photo-realistic portrait of Geroge Washington, then add a few fun flourishes," genre.That said, my tween LOVES this book and makes pictures from it morning noon and night. I bought her a Kawaii book, but instead I now have majestic jungle scenes, plants of all types and hand-painted birds everywhere.In the right hands, this book is a great source of inspiration. The authors' illustration work is AH-MAY-ZING.It just doesn't quite jive with my, "Tell me all the things, first," style of learning.

I am by no means an artist but have always loved Papio Press and thought even just for the pictures this book would be a treat to get. And man, it did not disappoint! The tutorials are easy to follow and I’ve actually been able to produce some of the designs somewhat acturately. Bonus that the book is eye candy through and through! When I posted some of my pictures on Instagram, Papio even commented on them. Love small companies that are accessible and supportive 💕

I enjoy this book very much. The step by step illustrations make it easy to learn to draw.

"The Creature Garden" is a step-by-step guide to drawing or painting stylized animals and plants. For each animal, the authors illustrated how to draw the basic shapes--circles, triangles, rectangles--and connect the shapes to give the basic animal outline. Then they showed which direction to paint and provided illustrations for adding color and patterns with additional details added in each step. The text mainly described information about the animal with a few tips on how to make a stylized animal recognizable.They briefly talked about various materials you might use, like markers, watercolors, gouache, and acrylic. They showed how to make the patterns on animal coats. Overall, the illustrations do a good job of showing how to make these animals and plants, especially if you are comfortable with how-to art books with minimal text.The authors showed how to draw a jaguar, snow leopard, tiger, lion, house cat, dog, wolf, fox, horse, deer, hare, panda, bears, sloth, elephant, giraffe, whale, dolphin, tropical fish, narwhal, octopus, seahorse, swan, flamingo, peacock, crane, owl, cardinal, butterfly, moth, damselfly, bee, phoenix, fairy, mermaid, unicorn, pegasus, griffin, centaur, hippogriff, and Asian dragon. They also provided step-by-step illustrations for several garden plants, forest plants, jungle plants, and underwater plants.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

The Creature Garden: An Illustrator's Guide to Beautiful Beasts & Fictional Fauna is a tutorial art book from husband & wife team Zanna and Harry Goldhawk. Published by Quarto - Rock Point with a release date of 29 May, 2018, it's full colour 120 pages and available in hardbound format.One thing that struck me straightaway about the book is its exuberance. Both prose and illustrations are humour filled and supportive, encouraging shy artists to try different techniques and challenge the way they see things in order to improve their art.The authors also show different basic techniques and materials for following their tutorials (including digital painting). The emphasis is on not following the lessons slavishly but finding methods which work for the individual. I also really loved that Zanna (who apparently wrote the text) talks honestly and encouragingly about her own learning process and growth as an artist.The book starts by introducing materials and techniques and the different effects they can produce. The intro and tutorial chapters take up about 8% of the page content.The lion's share of the book (~85%) is taken up with the illustrated drawing pages and tutorials for specific animals. I like that a lot of them are painted in gouache/chalk on a black background. The contrast makes it easier to see the techniques and provides a good counterpoint to the pages done in colour on a white background. There's even a comprehensive chapter for fantastic creatures including mermaids, griffons, dragons, hippogriffs and pegasi.There are also detailed botanical drawings throughout the book to provide scale and setting to the animal drawings. Toward the back of the book, botanical and plant subjects get their own chapter with a good explanation selecting and drawing plants to provide mood and environmental context.Really lively and fun book, accessible and encouragingly written. J. Robert Lilly is Regents Professor of Sociology/Criminology and Adjunct Professor of Law at Northern Kentucky University. His research interests include the pattern of capital crimes committed by U.S. soldiers during World War II, the “commercial–corrections complex,” juvenile delinquency, house arrest and electronic monitoring, criminal justice in the People’s Republic of China, the sociology of law, and criminological theory. He has published in Criminology, the British Journal of Criminology, Crime and Delinquency, Social Problems, Legal Studies Forum, Northern Kentucky Law Review, Journal of Drug Issues, The New Scholar, Adolescence, Qualitative Sociology, Federal Probation, International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice, Justice Quarterly, and The Howard Journa of Criminal Justice. He has coauthored several articles and book chapters with Richard A. Ball, and he is coauthor of House Arrest and Correctional Policy: Doing Time at Home (1988). In 2003, he published La Face Cachée des GI’s: Les Viols commis par des soldats amércains en France, en Angleterre et en Allemange pendat la Second Guerre mondial, 1942–1945. Waited a long time for release! Finally we have a guide to learn the CUCM. Would be good if Cisco would include a trial copy of the CUCM with the book as it is very difficult to get the required software to set up the lab. The labs are equipment intensive so do a little homework prior to committing to the book.

Cisco Lab book I used for a Cisco IP Telephony class. I've never been a big fan of Cisco curriculums, but the labs are decent and are a good supplement to the teaching I'm getting.

This is a great overall woman's health book. It says right on the back that every woman turning 40 should read it, I agree 100% & I am 60. It's a great reference book to look things up on woman's health.

I've started reading this and it is full of information, some I knew, other info I'm learning. I appreciate that it's broken down in sections for ease of reading brief sections at a time (when I can). Looking forward to learning more.

Interesting and informative book!

Very basic and outdated. Publishing date on this is years ago when HRT was popular. Now that no HRT due to known dangers, much of the advice is ridiculous. I could find the same on the internet these days. I would not recommend purchasing.

Just the facts, ma'am. Not trying to sell you on a supplement or diet or hormones, just the straight, medical truth about this phase of a woman's life. An enjoyable read, an excellent reference.

this is a must have book if you are experiancing menopause or periomenopause, i liked it so much i gave it to my sister & ordered another one for me book arrived in a timely fashion as good as new most excellent!

My mom loved it. I love it. But I quickly learned, after I recommended it to my book club for our monthly reading, that it's not a favorite with everyone. Hee hee! The reason I like it so much is that I am amazed how a person can write with such emotion about a topic that one (I'm assuming) hasn't actually experienced. It's a bit dark, according to my book club ladies, but I think those are the books I like the most, apparently!

I'll preface my critical remarks by saying I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is the first of Jane Hamilton's I've read but it certainly won't be the last. I love her writing style, beautifully and seamlessly weaving elements of the story, past and present. It's written in first person from the aspects of a wife and her husband which fleshes out the human condition, a style I'm fond of. Its flaws, in my opinion, are a few places where the internal dialog, especially the wife's, becomes a bit too lengthy bordering on monotony. I also didn't like the last few pages and how they ended the story. There were too many loose ends. It gave the impression that the author simply tired of writing and thus the ending fell flat for me. That being said, the read was beautiful and most enjoyable.

The good news is that about halfway through, The Map of the World becomes a page turner. You want to find out what is going to happen. It's kind of like gossiping about the neighbors or reading the tabloids. You know that something is wrong, but you're not really sure about all the details.The bad news about this novel is that all the characters are just so ordinary. Even the extraordinary circumstances in which they find themselves (a toddler drowning and child sex abuse charges) don't serve to bring out anything exceptional in these characters. At the end of this book, I felt that Jane Hamilton had played with her readers by basing her story on such sensational and emotion-filled events. Usually an author uses events like these to bring out the best or worst in her characters. In this case, nothing changes. The Goodhearts (can you believe this name?), are just as ordinary at the end of the book as they were at the beginning. While Hamilton tries to make them seem extraordinary because they are latter day hippies in the middle of suburbia, she does not succeed. The horrible events, not the characters or plot, carry this story. The ending of the book is predictable and not terribly interesting.

A Map of the World by Jane HamiltonA Map of the World centers around Alice, a woman that seems to march to a different drummer, and apparently does not seem to fit in with regular society. There is nothing really wrong with her, but for some reason, she lacks the social skills that helps others fit in. She is married to a wonderful husband Howard, who is as different from Alice as night is from day. I couldn't understand why anyone would be drawn to Alice, but Howard obviously loved her.The story opens with Alice in a panic, taking care of her two young daughters and her friend Theresa's two girls, while Theresa is out. Alice obviously does not enjoy taking care of the kids. Motherhood does not suit her.What happens next is what sets the tone of the book. The younger of Theresa's two girls, Lizzie, drowns outside in the pond where the girls often played. The reader and the characters in the book wonder, "Whose fault was it?" The town has already made up their mind about Alice, and it is not favorable. However, Theresa stands by her friend, despite the great loss she and her husband Dan have just gone through.This is only the beginning of Alice's troubles. Rumors start to circulate about Alice and her work as a school nurse. What follows is a series of events that threatens to tear Alice's family apart.From reactions I received from friends, and reading the reviews at Amazon, I've noticed that this is probably one of the more difficult books to get through that Oprah chose for her book club. I'm the only person I know that actually enjoyed this book. What kept me reading was Jane Hamilton's beautiful writing style. That alone was worth reading this book. The story is depressing and the main character is not a likeable person at all. Despite this, I do recommend the book, but with a word of caution, that one needs to be patient in order to finish this book.

Asia McClain is a pivotal figure in a well known murder case, but her role is limited to a few minutes of alibi in a long timeline. What is the value of hearing her story in long form, I wondered when I purchased this book? Turns out, not a lot, really. She is a clear writer and a very upstanding person, but her story in this case is just too brief to take upA whole book.

As an avid podcast listener I never doubted that I would purchase and red this book. I've been following the Adnan Syed/Hae Min Lee case for quite some time now. Any opportunity to gather information will be taken.Asia Chapman's book was no exception. I purchased because I wanted to hear Asia's story. And that's exactly what this book is. Her story, her perspective in HER words.It's evident from the beginning that this story has not been heavily edited. I didn't see any evidence of a ghost writer or professional editor at all. The tone is conversational and heavy with slang. If I had purchased this book for entertainment purposes I would have been dissatisfied. It is certainly not a novel, but rather a firsthand account of incidents relating to the prosecution of a murder case. I purchased because I was willing to pay for Asia's raw account.Honestly, I believe that the information shared could have been just as easily published in a blog format. And the author could have saved herself much criticism had she done just that. The book reads nearly like a diary, which I believe it began as. I do wish more time had been taken to polish the story to make it easier to read. Regardless, in my opinion the author has every right to compensation for her time and trouble with regard to this case.I would recommend the book to anyone wanting a first hand account of Asia Chapman's perspective with regard to the Adnan Syed/Hae Min Lee case and trial. While it would hold the attention of anyone who has followed this case it would be of little interest to anyone else.

Book is good, just finishing it. I must say there are dozens, maybe hundreds of editing errors. Also, Aisa really thinks a lot about herself! I really liked her until I read her “the whole world thinks I’m amazing and famous” book!

I've read and listened to all things Serial related. Asia wrote this to set the record, and her side of the story, straigh, and I respect that. She didn't ask to be dragged into Serial, and we get a sense of how she was blindsided by the series and its notoriety, as well as by her interactions with Sarah Koenig. This is by no means a literary work, but I do not feel it should be judged as one. If you want a little more of an inside scoop about Woodlawn High back in the day, or are still interested in Adnan's case, the book is worth getting.

This book is definitely for Serial fans and she writes as if you've listened to the podcast.What it is: Asia McClain telling her side of the story. Written in a direct and colloquial way, she writes as if she's talking to a friend. Definitely feels honest and not contrived. I applaud her wanting to take control of her narrative. As a Serial fan I know I was too hard on her early on. I had a lot of assumptions and this book gave some explanations that made me understand what happened and her unique experince.Good for her! As long as you don't have the expectation that she's a professional, more polished writer I think a Serial fan or someone interested in the Adnan Syed case will enjoy.

Easy read, nice to read her point of view and ready for her next novel.

I liked getting her side of the story. The story exposes all of us as human beings whose memories fade sometimes, but can be the window into someone else life.

Great look into someone affected directly by the Serial podcast and what it's like to participate in court proceedings. Grateful to get to know the person who came forward to tell the truth. If you are interested at all in Adnan Syed's story, this is an essential read.
