Ellis Valmont, a headstrong young lady of Spanish and French descent, finds herself nursing a handsome young bilingual soldier back to health. As Ellis nurses him, she discovers the soldier may hold very important secrets- but on which side does his loyalty lie?This novel hit the sweet spot for me with frequent references to Ellis’s great-grandmother, Maribel Cordoba. Maribel’s story was told in The Pirate Bride, a wonderful story, also by Y’Barbo. Every mention of Maribel’s name brought flashbacks of that vicarious adventure and how much I enjoyed it. This in turn, increased my enjoyment of The Alamo Bride. Still, I think this novel can stand on its own if one hasn’t read Y’Barbo’s previous tome.I enjoyed seeing the relationship development between Ellis and Clay. Ellis is quite the spitfire (like her great- grandmother, Maribel) when she decides that she wants to do something. We see that same personality trait as Ellis deals with her beloved Grandfather, as well.I was really impressed with what a frightening time in the Texians’ history this would have been to live. Y’Barbo kept me feeling off-balance right along with her uncertain characters.Quotes:“I don’t believe in luck... The Lord takes care of us in His own way. If we manage to have something go our way, we figure it’s because it is His way.”“In times of war, not all friends were truly friends. And sadly, not all family escaped the title of enemy.”I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinions, for which I am solely responsible. I was not required to leave a positive review.

The series, for those who don’t know, is written by various authors, starting with Kimberley Woodlouse’s novel titled The Mayflower Bide. Following that there are the five novels: The Pirate Bride, The Captured Bride, The Patriot Bride, The Cumberland Bride, The Liberty Bride, and coming in April 2019 is The Golden Bride. Each novel is unique and filled with adventure, mystery, and romance along with faith of the characters.Every one of the previously listed stories I have read and enjoyed for different reasons. The Alamo Bride took me a few chapters to become engaged but was still worth reading. Here, the lead female character is known mainly by her shortened named Ellis. Her personality is one of stubbornness, strength, knowledge of herbs and healing along with courage.The story is not set when the battle of the Alamo is taking place. Readers will be lured into the story by a man from New Orleans who is on a presidential mission. However, harm comes to him and not only is his life in danger but so is concluding the mission. Ellis and her family don’t know if they can trust this man, as he is having memory issues and they aren’t sure which side he stands with, Santa Anna or those loyal to Texas.The book was for hard to get into but once I did, it was good. I thought the story would take place at the Alamo and during the fighting. There are individual skirmishes, but the tale focuses on Ellis and the man who has a mission. It is worth reading and enjoying, and I look forward to the last book in the series to see how this is all going to conclude!

This is Kathleen Y'Barro's second book in the enjoyable "Daughters of the Mayflower" series. It begins with the fictional family tree, linking this story to the others, a letter to readers about background, and Psalm 91--which is also woven throughout the adventure. The reader soaks up Texas history and setting back in the 1830s while being caught up in an intriquing drama. The book ends with "Bent History: The Rest of the Story."

I have read a few books in this series and unfortunately this one is my least favorite, which is surprising because my favorite was The Pirate Bride by the same author. Our main characters Ellis and Clay are both great but unfortunately there’s very little going on in the story. For about half the book Clay is recovering from injuries and Ellis is taking care of him. As a young woman she is obviously wary of this stranger and suspicious of his loyalties. About two thirds of the way in the book they finally trust each other and head out to find Ellis’ brother who is believed to be taken captive. Ellis has a delightful grandfather who was a fun character but there is no way he would allow the two of them to head out together. It would have been a violation of propriety and he very much believed in protecting her reputation. I wish there had been a better plot point for this. After setting out they are very quickly separated and the story moves quickly with battles mentioned at too rapid a pace to follow. There is very little to learn in the way of history in this book. It’s not boring but not exactly riveting if that makes sense. I wish these characters could have had a more interesting story because they are both solid characters. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I could hardly wait for another great Jodi Thomas read but this book turned into my least favorite of all. The scene where Rose entered her room and encountered Duncan felt like the Jodi Thomas settings that whisked her readers into those 'feel-good' stories. But after that short intro, so little of her story centered around the couple that the book was supposed to be about that I struggled to even finish the book.The Whispering Mountain series was wonderful...a showcase for an author of incredible talent. But with this book, sadly, it lacked that magical Jodi Thomas touch.

While the pairing of Rose and Duncan was never hinted at or even commented upon in previous Whispering Mountains books, fans of the series couldn't help feeling there was a chance they might be paired together. So, when I saw this was Rose's story, I was thrilled and pre-ordered it right away.The story started out good. However, the summary is very misleading because I felt Rose was never in danger because of Duncan. The outlaw gang is not determined to kill her. I doubt they even know who Rose is. Rose's friend is more likely to put Rose in danger than Duncan is. I never got into the plot because the point of view was always changing. There was too many characters and each chapter was about a different character. Like earlier reviews have said, the secondary characters were more interesting than the main characters. I never understood Rose or Duncan. I went back to count and out of the 51 chapters, half of them were about Rose or Duncan or both (Also, keep in mind that some of the chapters were really short. Some were only a 2-page conversation). I don't even know how they fell in love with each other since most of their back story was told in short descriptions.My biggest problem is Duncan's past and the romantic relationship wasn't answered. Apparently, Duncan has been looking into his past and he has a letter that he never opened with information about his birth parents, his real name and age. This exploration of Duncan into his past is never explained. Also, besides mentioning what might be in the letter and that he wanted to open it with Rose by his side, the letter is never mentioned again.The second question I had that Thomas never answered is the pairing of Rose and Duncan. Yes, they are not blood-related and were both adopted by the McMurrays so they can marry each other. However, they ARE cousins (meaning they were raised to see each other as cousins). They introduce themselves to people as cousins. What I found strange is the romance between the two was never questioned by them, their friends or the people around them. Also, I can't help wondering what the McMurray family would think of the pairing? Did they know Rose was going to end up with Duncan? We are given so little information about their past that it's hard to speculate when they started having feelings for each other.I always enjoyed a Jodi Thomas' book, especially her earlier books. She always has great characters, interesting plot, and engaging conversations. That being said, while this story is easy to read, it wasn't on par with the other Whispering Mountains books mainly because her writing style was different. The story was incomplete. After finishing the book, I felt there was a WILD TEXAS ROSE 2 somewhere. To me, the writing was very similar to Jodi Thomas' Harmony series. While the different perspectives worked in the Harmony series, it didn't work here because this is one book not a series. 320 pages is not enough to effectively flesh out 2 main characters and 6 secondary characters. If you enjoyed the Harmony series, you might like this. However, don't read this expecting Rose and Duncan's love story, you won't get it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. Normally, the Whispering Mountain series is really good, but this time it seems like Ms. Thomas just gave up. In addition to the romance between Rose and Duncan, Ms. Thomas decided to add not one, not two, but three additional romances in this one book. Juggling four couples' struggles to find love and happiness means that a few things had to fall through the cracks, and, unfortunately, the story between Rose and Duncan was one of those things. Duncan spends most of this book injured and vulnerable, not what one expects of a seasoned Texas Ranger who is supposed to be the hero of the story. Rose ends up being both hero and heroine, with a healed Duncan making an appearance at the end, to which Rose says: "It's about time you showed up." I guess we are supposed to assume they live happily ever after with that snarky comment. I think the Rose and Duncan story needed more developing and a couple of the side stories should have been left out-especially since they'll never be heard about again in the one remaining book of the series.

I'm not a children's book reviewer but I do think that those books are judged differently than books written for adults. For instance, books aimed at young children are generally mostly pictorial with a bit of text. Little plot or few characters to analyse as I would do if reviewing an adult book. However, I do want to review Kevin Henkes's new book, "A Parade of Elephants", as it is one of the cutest books I've ever seen.I've bought many books for my four grandchildren, who are all under the age of six. Most are good and the kids enjoy them, but "A Parade of Elephants", which I bought for my almost 3 year old granddaughter, is in a category of its own. The text is simple - a day, more or less, in the lives of five elephants - and the drawings of the four adults and one baby as they walk around, up and down, over and under. Kevin Henkes's drawings are heart-warming; I just wanted to reach out and hug them. My grandgal, who loves toy elephants, enjoyed the book and I hope it becomes one of her favorite book.

I purchased "Parade of Elephants" along with "Waiting" and "Egg" by Kevin Henkes for my eleven month old grand daughter. They're fast becoming her favorite books to read (with a little help from parents or grandparents.) I was having a hard time figuring out what gift to buy until I learned about "Parade of Elephants" from a recent review I read in the Wall Street Journal. The other two books were mentioned in the review so I bought them too. I'm glad I did!

What a beautiful book. The pages are thick and colorful, and the illustrations are the type of masterful art that make it a joy to read a counting book over and over again. (Counting books are boring for adults!)My standard for a great children’s book is that I can read it over and over with joy while my kids love it. This meets the mark!Great for 2-5 year olds building number sense, this book has kids counting and pointing and noticing changes along the way.And did I mention it’s just lovely? Would be a great pastel, springtime gift.

I love all books written by Kevin Henkes. His illustrations are simple and amazing. I like the he uses few words, but speaks volumes for little ones. This would be the kind of book you would read before bed. Don't rush through the book, but talk about what they see, what they think will happen. Take your time. The story will not disappoint.

I was between three and four stars for this book. I love elephants and the depictions of them are lovely. The book was a little young for the four year old, the size and shape of the book were unwieldy for the two year old.

Adorable book esp for infants who don’t yet understand books or have the attention span to sit through a more detailed book.

Hope the child liked it as much as I did...a former Children's Lit prof.

It is a cute book and illustrations are nice.

Before he passed away, I managed to persuade him to talk about his experiences during the dash to Manila, going through the front gate of the prison, and later, fighting in the battle of Manila. He was wounded twice.​Even when talking with him about ​the Cavalry's rescue of the prisoners held at ​Santo Tomas​, and even knowing that he had been ​h​it in the collar bone by Jap shrapnel in the prison,​ (one inch to the left, and it would have killed him), and later during the battle of Manila he was wounded when a hand grenade exploded spewing shrapnel into his face,​ I had NO idea that the bombardment of the prison was so heavy ​and lethal and that the battle itself was so horrible ​until reading this book. The rescue truly was a daring operation. ​ Why Spielberg or Eastwood or Gibson do not make a film of this, I have no idea.People who had survived over 3 years of abuse, starvation, executions of friends are killed while holding hands in the main building. I saw the pock marks on the building when I was there in 2010. One cavalryman came into the main building holding a bundle wrapped in a poncho​. He was dazed like in a trance. He went up to one of the doctors and asked "What should I do with this?" The doctor unwrapped the bundle. It was the upper torso of the cavalryman's best friend.In New Guinea, in the Admiralty Islands, on Leyte, and then in Manila, my father saw the results of many Japanese atrocities, day in and day out. He only spoke of one such horror and refused to revisit so many others. This book lays such horrors out in detail and those details will rob most people of sleep. Reading Rampage, I understand my father so much better now.​Anyone with a feeling for the Philippines or interested in the Pacific War should read this book.​

I had tracked the release of this book for over 6 months because a detailed updated description of the battle for Manila has been lacking. I had anticipated a book of military history such as the recently released account of the battle for Hue. The author of Rampage has certainly conducted extensive research into the subject matter and the book is very well written. However describing it as military history is very misleading. The book describes military operations in a very generalized manner. As I read through the account I considered myself lucky when unit identifications less than division size were provided. His misuse of common nomenclature when differentiating between regiments and divisions add to the confusion. The lack of adequate maps showing in detail the progress of fighting within the city is another gross omission. The author spends what seems to be about 85% of this book describing the atrocities which were committed by the Japanese upon civilians and prisoners in the city. The research on this subject was obviously extensive and these terrible events are described in overwhelming detail. The trouble is that the focus on the suffering of the civilians is overdone to the detriment of the description of military events which are at best cursory. In sum, I would consider the book a questionable addition to the descriptions of the battle found in more general narratives of the Pacific area fighting. The author is referred to the aforementioned study of Hue or to Colonel Glantz's descriptions of the Stalingrad fighting for how the military history of fighting within a city should be described. The end product of this book is principally about atrocities, not military operations. Furthermore his descriptions of the motivations and actions of MacArthur and Yamashita are lacking in depthVery disappointed.

This is an important book to read about a major WWII battle that has been largely ignored. The author doesn't spare the reader the details of the horrid and bestial war crimes committed. If you are a sensitive person, this book may be too much for you. I had to put it aside several times and found myself weeping more than once. It was a story that should have been told a long time ago. The account of Yamashita's war crimes trial was very interesting. I had no idea it was so controversial.This is well worth reading for anyone interested in WWII history or war crimes.

I bought this book for myself, excited about the whimsy of the artwork. While I have been able to create a few fun sketches using the book, it's been frustrating to use.I'd like more detail on which plants are which so I can compare the stylized version to a different reference.I'd also like a watercolor and computer set of instructions for each project. The book says near the beginning that it contains some of both, but it takes extra brain power for me to suss out which tools were used to make which demos.As art books go, this is in the, "Step one, draw a circle, Step two, complete your photo-realistic portrait of Geroge Washington, then add a few fun flourishes," genre.That said, my tween LOVES this book and makes pictures from it morning noon and night. I bought her a Kawaii book, but instead I now have majestic jungle scenes, plants of all types and hand-painted birds everywhere.In the right hands, this book is a great source of inspiration. The authors' illustration work is AH-MAY-ZING.It just doesn't quite jive with my, "Tell me all the things, first," style of learning.

I am by no means an artist but have always loved Papio Press and thought even just for the pictures this book would be a treat to get. And man, it did not disappoint! The tutorials are easy to follow and I’ve actually been able to produce some of the designs somewhat acturately. Bonus that the book is eye candy through and through! When I posted some of my pictures on Instagram, Papio even commented on them. Love small companies that are accessible and supportive 💕

This book is every bit as beautiful and helpful as I expected it would be from being a fan of these artists on Instagram. Thank you for a glimpse into your process, I’m getting out my iPad right now to try some of your tutorials!!! I’d give 10 stars I’d I could!

I enjoy this book very much. The step by step illustrations make it easy to learn to draw.

"The Creature Garden" is a step-by-step guide to drawing or painting stylized animals and plants. For each animal, the authors illustrated how to draw the basic shapes--circles, triangles, rectangles--and connect the shapes to give the basic animal outline. Then they showed which direction to paint and provided illustrations for adding color and patterns with additional details added in each step. The text mainly described information about the animal with a few tips on how to make a stylized animal recognizable.They briefly talked about various materials you might use, like markers, watercolors, gouache, and acrylic. They showed how to make the patterns on animal coats. Overall, the illustrations do a good job of showing how to make these animals and plants, especially if you are comfortable with how-to art books with minimal text.The authors showed how to draw a jaguar, snow leopard, tiger, lion, house cat, dog, wolf, fox, horse, deer, hare, panda, bears, sloth, elephant, giraffe, whale, dolphin, tropical fish, narwhal, octopus, seahorse, swan, flamingo, peacock, crane, owl, cardinal, butterfly, moth, damselfly, bee, phoenix, fairy, mermaid, unicorn, pegasus, griffin, centaur, hippogriff, and Asian dragon. They also provided step-by-step illustrations for several garden plants, forest plants, jungle plants, and underwater plants.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

The Creature Garden: An Illustrator's Guide to Beautiful Beasts & Fictional Fauna is a tutorial art book from husband & wife team Zanna and Harry Goldhawk. Published by Quarto - Rock Point with a release date of 29 May, 2018, it's full colour 120 pages and available in hardbound format.One thing that struck me straightaway about the book is its exuberance. Both prose and illustrations are humour filled and supportive, encouraging shy artists to try different techniques and challenge the way they see things in order to improve their art.The authors also show different basic techniques and materials for following their tutorials (including digital painting). The emphasis is on not following the lessons slavishly but finding methods which work for the individual. I also really loved that Zanna (who apparently wrote the text) talks honestly and encouragingly about her own learning process and growth as an artist.The book starts by introducing materials and techniques and the different effects they can produce. The intro and tutorial chapters take up about 8% of the page content.The lion's share of the book (~85%) is taken up with the illustrated drawing pages and tutorials for specific animals. I like that a lot of them are painted in gouache/chalk on a black background. The contrast makes it easier to see the techniques and provides a good counterpoint to the pages done in colour on a white background. There's even a comprehensive chapter for fantastic creatures including mermaids, griffons, dragons, hippogriffs and pegasi.There are also detailed botanical drawings throughout the book to provide scale and setting to the animal drawings. Toward the back of the book, botanical and plant subjects get their own chapter with a good explanation selecting and drawing plants to provide mood and environmental context.Really lively and fun book, accessible and encouragingly written.
