Flame of Yahweh: Sexuality in the Old Testament, by Richard M. Davidson

From the Back Cover

Flame of Yahweh provides a thorough discussion and perceptive theological understanding of human sexuality and gender as revealed in the Old Testament. Davidson sets before his readers the original intent and continuing ideal of sexual and gender relations as provided in the Scriptures of the OT. The Edenic ideals of human sexuality, love, and relationship are plunged into discord and disharmony, a discord and disharmony as evident on the pages of the Bible as in the daily news. In response to this disarray, Davidson demonstrates how the OT provides a renewed vision of the true and the right. Recognizing the foundational aspects of his comprehensive study for New Testament studies, the author also outlines the implications for the NT understanding of human sexuality and gender that grew out of the OT literature.

This book is a serious academic work (844 pages) setting forth the "biblical foundations for understanding human sexuality." It is the culmination of the author's twenty-five years of in-depth research into the panoply of Old and New Testament Scripture regarding the various manifestations of human sexuality. In the process, Davidson develops the most comprehensive presentation I've ever encountered regarding heterosexual monogamy--"God's original design for sexuality and marriage in the relationship between Adam and Eve...as a pattern for all future sexual relationships." Flame of Yahweh provides normative and epistemological grounding on several ontological/anthropological subjects.Note: This work is built upon the presupposition of biblical inerrancy of the 66 books of Bible--God's *exclusive written* revelation to mankind. If readers of this review are unclear as to what that means or the nature of the epistemological claims, please read Professor Ronald H. Nash's excellent primer, The Word of God and the Mind of Man.Both scholarly and conservative, Professor Davidson provides insight from the original languages (Hebrew, Greek, etc.), from the biblical Canon (Bible), and from ancient Near-Eastern source literature. The book includes and contrasts various alternative theological perspectives (liberal, feminist, postmodern, etc.). Looking back millennia, Davidson's gleaned insights are often profound.Section 1 (80 pages) provides teleological insight into sexuality in the Garden of Eden. Section 2 (462 pages) covers sexuality outside Eden. Section 3, (87 pages) entitled “Return to Eden,” is an in-depth commentary on the OT book: Song of Songs. Section 1 (Chapters 1 & 2) entitled Sexuality in Eden: The Divine Design (Genesis 1-3) are worth the price of the entire book!!Despite my many years as a serious student of Scripture, Flame of Yahweh has given me a deeper understanding of ancient Near Eastern culture as well as extended glimpses into the ontological mysteries of sexuality as God originally designed it. An indispensable resource for counselors and pastor/teachers. For anyone wanting or needing a graduate level, serious in-depth theological, ontological, linguistic, and philosophical exploration of sexuality, this is it!

This is a great book, it goes into a lots of details. Especially about sex in the old & new testament.

The best resource for seminars/sermons and marriage prep/support, I have found on expelling so many unfounded rumors on God's view of human sexuality.

Very thorough and indepth study. Very well documented sources. This is a beast of a book but well worth having as a resource in my library.

This is the most comprehensive overview of how God views the topic of sexuality I've ever come across. Davidson shows how God's design for sex is tied into His nature and His desire that man is to be holy because God is holy. I am writing a Bible study on sex for young adults and this text will be one of my main resources.

Very well written. Thank you.

flame of Yahweh: Sexuality in the Old Testament

This is a comprehensive study of sexuality in the Old Testament, discussing social, legal, ethical, and theological factors. There is an extensive discussion of the interrelationships between various parts of the Old Testament. Davidson starts with Eden as a model for human sexuality, gives a close analysis of the laws in the Torah in light of that experience, and then moves exhaustively into a topic-by-topic discussion of how things functioned in ancient Israel, mining all parts of the Old Testament for whatever light can be shed on the topic, and finally concluding with the Song of Solomon as a model for fulfilled sexual experience. While the primary focus is on the Old Testament, Davidson occasionally addresses the New Testament outlook and discusses application to contemporary ethical questions. Discussions with other theologians are usually carried on in the footnotes, but no less enlightening for all that. This is not a complete Christian theology of sexuality, but it is a necessary building block for any such effort. The book would probably have benefited from a better editing job, as it is frequently somewhat repetitive. This does make it more useful as a reference source, however, as you don't have to read the whole thing to pick up every nuance of the topic you're investigating.Highly recommended for those interested in the history of sexuality, the theology of sexuality, contemporary pastoral issues, gender history, and the social history of ancient Judaism

A Kiss Goodnight

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4—As a child in Marceline, MI, Walt Disney was inspired by the annual Fourth of July fireworks. Throughout his life, while building his company and creating animated movies, he remembered how those fireworks had felt like "the perfect kiss goodnight," and when he opened Disneyland, he wanted to give every guest that same magical experience. Songwriter Sherman wrote the text, as well as the song on the accompanying CD. Musical notation and lyrics from the song can be found on some pages, though they are not integral to the narrative. The text is brief enough to serve as a read-aloud; however, this title will work best for one-on-one sharing. With a storybook feel, the tale is intentionally vague, and Disney is never referred to by name but rather as "the boy" or "the man." Illustrated by animator Norman in a style familiar to classic Disney animated films, scenes from Disney's day-to-day life are rendered in shades of gray, illuminated by pops and flashes of color when fireworks appear. The story is sweet but not as exciting or dazzling as the pyrotechnics that sparked the idea for the book. VERDICT Purchase only where Disneyphiles abound.—Misti Tidman, Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, OH

If you're like me, the main reason you'll buy this book is to get the recording of Ashley Brown singing the title song written by Richard Sherman. The recording was made to play after Disneyland's 60th anniversary fireworks show, Disneyland Forever. I was blown away the first time I heard it at the park and have been looking forward to owning it ever since. Thank you, Richard Sherman for continuing to write songs that touch the heart through words and melody. Hopefully Disney continues to find projects for new Richard Sherman songs. Disney should have Ashley Brown record a full album of Disney music. She is phenomenal! I've heard her in concert and can't wait to hear her again. The book itself is also very nice. It's really a picture biography of Walt Disney. The text is well written and the illustrations are fun and engaaging. The introductions from Richard Sherman and Floyd Norman at the beginning add a personal connections to Walt Disney.

I love the song and am even more impressed with the story. It is beautifully done.I knew it would be fantastic because it was done by Richard Sherman and Floyd Norman. Floyd Norman's artwork is exquisite. My only complaint is you can't get to the CD without damaging the book our this paper CD sleeve. I want to hear the music but am unwilling to damage the book. I wish i could purchase the CD separately.

Beautifully written and illustrated! My wife and I fell in love with the song while watching the Diamond Celebration fireworks in the park and I just had to get this book for her as a gift. Not disappointed!!!As a tip to those complaining about ruining the book to remove the CD--just pull back the top portion enough to where it tears from the cover. You can then open the flap and remove/put back the CD while leaving the bottom in tact. Since the CD case is still stuck in place, it covers the 2 upper points where it was torn away.

This is meant to be a gift and I'm not sure what I was expecting but what this is was not it. It's a story about Walt that has the lyrics to the song at the bottom of the page. I suppose I was expecting more illustrations that matched the song as the backcover sort of suggested. That being said, from what I glanced at it, it looks well done and I still believe it will make a great gift.

the book was only in a bubble wrap envelope and it was unfortunately damaged in transit. expected and the book cover sleeve was crumpled on one corner because of it. the book itself is darling though, and an added bonus that you get the cd too! i didn’t even realize that when i bought it.

A beautifully illustrated childlike tale about Walt Disney. In the manor of a bedtime story, Richard Sherman tells of Walt's life of setbacks and triumphs with fantastic art by Floyd Norman. It comes with a CD of a song by Richard Sherman, but unfortunately it's stuck to the inside cover in a way that I had to damage the inside cover to retrieve the disc.

This book is about a fictional man named Walter Disney. He made a big castle and some boom booms in the sky. It's a good book if you like books for kids that are short and sweet. I personally like books that are short and sour so it loses one star there on that fact.

Anything by Disney music great Richard Sherman is worth investing time and money into - this is no exception ! Very well done, excellent - and dedicated to his old boss Walt Disney.

Amazon.com Review

Are you an HSP? Are you easily overwhelmed by stimuli? Affected by other people's moods? Easily startled? Do you need to withdraw during busy times to a private, quiet place? Do you get nervous or shaky if someone is observing you or competing with you? HSP, shorthand for "highly sensitive person," describes 15 to 20 percent of the population. Being sensitive is a normal trait--nothing defective about it. But you may not realize that, because society rewards the outgoing personality and treats shyness and sensitivity as something to be overcome. According to author Elaine Aron (herself an HSP), sensitive people have the unusual ability to sense subtleties, spot or avoid errors, concentrate deeply, and delve deeply. This book helps HSPs to understand themselves and their sensitive trait and its impact on personal history, career, relationships, and inner life. The book offers advice for typical problems. For example, you learn strategies for coping with overarousal, overcoming social discomfort, being in love relationships, managing job challenges, and much more. The author covers a lot of material clearly, in an approachable style, using case studies, self-tests, and exercises to bring the information home. The book is essential for you if you are an HSP--you'll learn a lot about yourself. It's also useful for people in a relationship with an HSP. --Joan Price

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

I'm actually only partway into this book and wow. Wow. WOW. If you're reading my review right now and you've never heard the term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) before, stop right now, open a different tab, and google it. Read stuff for a few minutes. If anything you've googled resonates, BUY THIS BOOK IMMEDIATELY. Basically the author is the primary source for most of what you'll read online, and she has a very pleasant to read way of laying out the research and making it clear what things we know about HSPs and how and why we know them... it's like reading a well-organized textbook written by a friend you like. 15%-ish percent of us were born with brains that process this way, and if you're one of us, knowing about it will save you a heckuva lot of therapy, stress, and self-loathing.

I have always been sensitive. No, that is wrong. I prided myself as being NOT sensitive for years. To the point of disconnecting from my emotions. It took me a long while to come to terms with being an HSP (highly sensitive person). For anyone who is, I recommend this book. It is an illuminating look at the personality type of being an HSP and shows that being sensitive isn't such a bad thing. I've bog eared, highlighted passages, and put page markers all over it.If you think you are an HSP, or realize that you are one this is the book for you and it has helped me to not pathologize myself and to embrace who I am again.

This book is a mess; I found it to be largely fluffy non-sense based on loose generalizations with no scientific backing. I am a HSP, but this book is a complete joke. I am absolutely shocked there are so many good reviews. This book was a waste of time and should not have been written in its current form. The author should have waited until these claims could have been better substantiated either by more scientific studies/evidence or by coherent clinical experience rather than wild, all-over-the-place generalizations and annoying stereotypes. And the entire book could have been condensed down to 3 pages.

This book provides insight into some of the many questions as to "why" 20% of us experience life so differently from the majority who set the norms in our society. The HSP's trait allows us to process input from our five senses so deeply and thoroughly that we require a different optimal balance of "in" and "out" time in society to reach our highest potential without over-stimulation and/or burnout. The other 80% whose traits process less intense depth, detail and stimulation from their senses tend to value the more assertive/aggressive behaviors therefore they often misunderstand the HSP's need for quiet reflective time as a sign of timidity. The Warrior Kings (80%) need the Royal Advisers (20%) to point out the benefits and/or consequences of an action...and so much more.

One in a wonderful series by Ellen Hart; interesting mystery, and the main character, Jane Lawless, first meets a woman with whom she establishes a relationship that continues on into other books. If you missed this one in the series, it's still worth reading, even if you've already read more recent Jane Lawless books,

In this 12th installment of the Jane Lawless mystery series, the opening prologue begins with a gripping kidnapping that takes place on Halloween in 1972. The circumstances of that prologue don't connect up for some time, but the shadow of the kidnapping hangs over the events that follow. In the present day, Jane Lawless is called to the location of a wedding her staff is catering. The guests are behaving oddly, and it quickly becomes clear that they've been poisoned with something hallucinogenic. The police come, and the wedding guests are rushed to the hospital, but not before the Nick, the bridegroom, is badly injured diving into an empty swimming pool. Jane is frantic. Not only is she upset that people have been injured after eating her catered food, but she also fears lawsuits. Who would do such a terrible thing? She can't believe her workers would have anything to do with it. Why has she been targeted?Alden Clifford, the groom's father, is a high school teacher, and he comes to the forefront as it becomes apparent that the attack might be connected to him and not about Jane at all. Six months earlier he had tried to prevent a school shooting, and the boy with the gun eventually shot and killed himself. Allegations about Alden's relationship with the boy come out, and Jane begins to wonder if this has made Alden the intended target. Nothing is immediately resolved, and Jane and The Lyme House are under police investigation. Jane turns to her best friend, Cordelia, but Cordelia has her own problems: namely a toddler dumped upon her doorstep by her sister. The little niece and Cordelia offer some great comic moments, and Cordelia, all by herself, is always funny. She refuses to ride in Jane's new Mini Cooper, calling it the "Daisy Duck-mobile." Instead she has bought herself a green Hummer, a useful purchase which becomes clear later in the novel. With an intricately interwoven plot, Hart rolls out perfectly timed scenes and details. The tension builds as the injury and death count increases. The author has never been better and does a marvelous job weaving in a compelling back story with the events of the present. She draws the reader in to this complex structure and doesn't let go until the final denouement some three hundred pages later. It's a gripping and compelling story. By the time the reader reaches the end, an intimate ghost has truly made its haunting presence known. (...)

Review

“Captivating... A powerful salute to the memory of Mary Williams, antebellum America's demure symbol of human freedom. Highly recommended.” - Library Journal (starred review)“Morgan-Owens has located a fascinating story and tells it with verve, adding a new dimension to the much-studied struggle against slavery in America.” - Publishers Weekly“A valuable contribution to abolitionist history.” - Kirkus Reviews“In a tour de force of historical recovery, Girl in Black and White combines a compelling, meticulously researched biography of the slave child abolitionists adored (and exploited) with a fascinating history of photography and visual culture. At the same time, Morgan-Owens’s careful inquiry into the complexities of so-called white slavery provides a disturbing look at the limits of social sympathy that relies on similarity. This beautifully written book challenges sentimental notions of national progress and offers new ways to patch together the true story of America’s racial past.” - Carla Kaplan, author of Miss Anne in Harlem: The White Women of the Black Renaissance“Girl in Black and White tells a mesmerizing story made vivid by the author’s keen eye for detail. This is a riveting story of an individual’s life, an important biography of an era, and a phenomenal contribution to discussions about the meaning of race in America.” - Emily Bernard, author of Black Is the Body and editor of Remember Me to Harlem

This book is very similar to two other recently released books, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David W. Blight, and Code Name: Lise: the True Story of the Woman Who Became WWII's Most Highly Decorated Spy by Larry Loftis. All of them are extensively researched and, therefore, do not read as smoothly a novel. However, if read slowly and intentionally, they provide provide fascinating information. In the cases of Frederick Douglass and The Girl in Black in White, it is uncanny that biased people (to put it kindly) from the nineteenth century have their counterparts in the twenty-first century. I was glad to have read the Douglass biography before The Girl in Black and White because it enabled me to better understand the quotes and references to him.Initially, I was drawn to this book because my great-grandfather, another Virginian, passed for white. When I first discovered the Mu, for mulatto, on my family's page in the 1880 census, after my surprise, my second reaction was how much non-consensual sex this represented. Jessie Morgan-Owens does a thorough job of putting faces and names to those kinds of victims (and perpetrators) in the family of Mary Mildred Williams. She also does a good job of revealing the subtle and not-so-subtle attitudes of racism and classism, not just among slave owners including those who exploited their own children, but also among the abolitionists who weren't quite as noble as they appeared. Among Jessie Morgan-Owens' extensive research are references including those two n-words that we no longer use: the ones which rhyme with diggers and happy.I'm sure I'm not alone as a white American who wants to hold my hands over my ears and chant, "La La La," to avoid learning painful details about the immeasurable human rights violations that took place in my own country. However, because the attitudes of so many people have not changed over the centuries (for crying-out-loud), the playing field is still not level, and violations are occurring on a regular and sadly, institutional basis. I admire the decision of Jessie Morgan-Owens to devote 25% of her book's proceeds to "organizations that serve communities of color, and those that work toward liberation in our present moment." I hope she makes a difference through both the information in this book, and her charity. So, I recommend this very well-researched book not only as an interesting story, but as insight into nineteenth century attitudes that are still alive today.

I was surprised that the book was physically small. I know that it would be a short book but I assumed that the book size was that of the typical Oxford/Rutledge university publications. The print is a size or two smaller than usual (14 point) so it is somewhat physically difficult to read. The material is presented very well and covers a lot of areas of the philosophy of law. I would gladly pay $2-3 more if the book size were to be slightly larger so the font is a typical university printing.

The Very Short Introduction... series has several advantages over other series that serve the same function of providing an introduction to a subject matter. The main advantage is physical size. Mr. Clark refers to it as the perfect "plane" book. That's true. But even better, it is a true pocket book. They fit easily into the back of one's jeans waiting for the odd moment to be pulled out and used. They can usually be easily read in a couple of hours. But that format has limitations. I find that the VSI volumes that are devoted to a single thinker are much more useful than the ones that cover a broad subject matter. (It inspires me to a bad pun. "A very short intro to a very big subject" is almost Oxfordmoronic. O, never mind.)At best, when dealing with a subject matter as opposed to an individual thinker the VSIs are concise intros. But sometimes, as with the VSI to The Philosophy of Law the treatment seems shallow. Wacks is very good on some of his thinkers: Rawls, Dworkin, Hart, Weber, and Habermas are all fairly well done. Some of the others are not as well handled- I found his treatment of Locke, Marx, Foucault to be cursory at best. It felt like a survey of a survey. So take it for what it is. This volume is a very quick overview of a lot of thinkers (see Mr. Clark's review for a good listing). Some of these thinkers are important enough to deserve their own volume in the series (Locke, Marx, and Habermas). Others like Rawls and Dworkin deserve such treatment. Prof. Wacks has provided us with a quick and cheap way to orient ourselves to future reading in this field. I just cannot help but feel that he could have done better. That if he had taken the time to flesh out his presentation for another fifty or so pages that it would have been a much more useful member of the VSI family.

The philosophy of law is one of the few fields of philosophy that have remained legitimate in the sense that practical questions and contemplations are not eschewed. Too often philosophical debate wanders into conceptual hallways that could best be described as mazes, but one cannot get to their centers even with keeping one hand on the wall. One gets forever lost in the entanglement of concepts, with nothing ever settled, and if an idea is deemed to be practical it follows that it must be uninteresting or illegitimate. But legal reasoning is a requirement for human well being, and then the question arises as to what system of concepts best encapsulates it. Many questions arise when contemplating proper philosophical frameworks for legal contemplation, and many of these are answered in this book, written of course for those readers who need a quick introduction to the subject matter. No reader would expect an in-depth discussion of the philosophy of law from this book, but there is enough in it to enable readers to investigate specialized topics of interest. The author begins the book by stating that the philosophy of law is "rarely an abstract, impractical pursuit", and he explains the (weak) demarcation between "descriptive" and "normative" legal theory. Because of its place in history, the author discusses the doctrine of natural law first, and this discussion sheds considerable light on why many modern conservatives are committed to this philosophy of law: it seems to make legitimate the social hierarchies that these conservatives insist we respect. The doctrine of legal positivism is then discussed, and in this regard the most interesting (and disconcerting) discussion is the "pure theory of law" of Hans Kelsen. The Kelsen theory is interesting since legal norms in this conception are all relational: any one particular norm must be justified or authorized by another norm, giving in the end a large hierarchy of norms with a "basic norm" sitting on top of the hierarchy and representing a completely formal or hypothetical construct. One should not view it as arbitrary though, since its selection is based on whether or not the legal order is "effective". The author does not really elaborate on this notion, but the open-ended nature of his discussion motivates the reader to investigate this doctrine in more detail through outside reading. If read in the light of current controversies in the interpretation of legal statutes by the United States Supreme Court, probably the most interesting discussion in the book concerns the legal philosophy of Ronald Dworkin. Dworkin himself is very critical of recent decisions that have been made by the Supreme Court in the last two years, but his criticisms in this regard are not brought out in this book. What is discussed is a conception of the law that seems "extralegal" in that it views legal contexts as being intertwined with moral and political ones. This makes legal reasoning more than just an application of rules, and forces the judge to consider the consequences that his edicts will have on the community.Because it is still in its infancy as a legal philosophy, considerations of jurisprudence brought about by discoveries in neuroscience are not discussed in this book. Called by some the "neuroscience of law" this branch of jurisprudence will probably not be taken seriously by the majority of legal philosophers for some time to come. This reviewer recommends the book by Brent Garland for those who want to supplement the reading of this book by considering what is at the present time very exciting developments in both neuroscience and legal philosophy.

Met my expectations exactly. Easier read, you don't have to work hard to understand it. Wacks is a great writer, fun to read.
